I can only speak for myself. For the beginning I would invest in a sleeping wedge so baby cant accidently roll over on the tummy and put them on their back or side.
I also used only 100% cotton stuff and had a breathable mattrass. I used thin layers of stuff and no duvets or anything. If you want to see if baby is too hot under blankets just feel behind their neck. If sweaty she is overheating. If it is too cold then she needs to be warmer. It is also normal for them to have cold feet and hands and doesnt mean they are cold at all. Dont worry you will get the hang soon enough. And everyone has their own opinion. We live in a very cold house so my children have a nubmer of layers on them . Josh sleeps in a sleep sack and on top of that he has 2 sheets, a blanket and a quilt so that 5 layers and then he is wearing 2 layers. But his room is cold so I need that amount on him. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

Okay well here's what I do. We live in a moderate-warm house so don't need any heating in the baby's room. I don't bother changing a baby before bed until 1yo (since before that they are in and out of bed all day anyway!). So Kryssi goes to bed with a singlet and all in one (or nowadays sometimes singlet and jersey and trousers) and socks/booties as well. She is wrapped (just weaning off that now) and her bed has an under blanket (to protect the matress if the bed gets wet - ie wee or vomit) then a bottom sheet, a top sheet (which I don't bother with when I full-time wrap cause that's basically a sheet anyway), then a woolen blanket in winter, and a lightweight duvet on top. The best lightweight duvet for cots that I have found is actually a child size sleeping bag   -------------  |

Noah has lots of layers. He goes to bed wearing a singlet, long sleeve domed at the bottom singlet and then an AIO. For covers he has a sheet, two wool blankets (folded in half so four layers)and then a cotton duvet on top (folded in half so two layers)and before I go to bed I put another heavy wool blanket on top to compensate for when the temp drops. The heavy wool blanket is really big so depending on how cold a night it is, I will either fold it in two or four. That sounds like sooooo much but he is lovely and toasty warm in the mornings and when I feel his neck he is never sweaty or anything. We stay in a cold place, so for Kahtrell I have him in a singlet, skivvy all n one, and pyjamas, n stockings or socks. He has a woolen wrap on top of his mattress, bottom and top sheets, 2 duvets and a polar fleece blanket to keep it all tucked in. Sleep sacks are really good, I need to find a new one for my son though since he's outgrown his old one. -------------

We are in a nice warm house and Sam's room rarely drops under 16 degrees at night. I have her in a tank top AIO, socks and footy pj's. She is in the bassinette with bottom sheet, top sheet and a cot blanket folded in two (this is more to make it short enough). Very occasionally i will add another blanket if needed.
Like everyone else has said you will figure out what is right for your wee one after a few trial and errors  My Sam seems to have a pretty good thermometer like her daddy and is usually quite warm anyway.
The sleep sacks are great, but duvets are not recommended until your baby is over 1 year. Not exactly sure why, but Plunket, midwives etc drill it in to you during pregnancy  ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Our room is warm James has a woollen underlay on mattress, cotton sheet, then he's wrapped in his shawl or in his polarfleece sleeping bag, then a cotton sheet on top and a blanket. Sometiems he prefers no wrapping and jsut having sheet and 2 blankewts ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I have a dr sprott cover then a cotton blanket - sheet then I will swaddle her and put a sheet on top followed by an Aircell doubled over and if necessary a brush cotton Now - I am sleeping baby in a bassinett - when should I start introducing her to her cot ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Sam is still in her bassinette now, we have an ezi-rocker though so she is sort of in her cot already (technically). It is really more a question of size than anything. When your wee girl gets to big then move her over to the cot.
The aircell blankets are fantastic! Although we have to fold ours in 4 to get it to fit :) Sam is pretty short and because you put them in with their feet at the bottom her blanket still only takes up just over half the length of the bassinette.  ------------- http://lilypie.com">

You cant really go on what I say as my child overheats extremely quickly. Even in winter when it is a bit warmish she is in total summer clothes where other kids are covered up ect. Her basal temp is also a lot lower than other kids. Dont worry you will find a medium real quickly with bubs. Just be carefull of too much. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Bassinette - when the baby outgrew it in my case. Hannah was the only one who didn't outgrow it but she used to suckle her fingers to sleep and then when she was asleep she would 'drop' her arm to her side - and hit the edge of the bassinette and wake up! Just do it when you're ready. ------------- |

The gremlins wear a singlet, all in one, then their sleep sack with no blankets on top (they kick them off) and I use a thermostat heater to keep the room between 16-18 degrees during the night. When they were smaller they were swaddled so didn't have the sleep sack.
We also use Safety Sleeps, I have used them with all three girls and they are brilliant. At the moment we are at my grandparents visiting and they are asleep top and tailed in a single bed with their safety sleeps on, no portacots needed. And I love that I know they can't roll over or get tangled up in the blankets etc. coz they are anchored in place. I can't remember when I weaned Maya off hers, I think about 9-10 months? ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

| Hi - as a mum-to-be I've been having bedding dilemmas and it's been really useful reading what you all do. I have made up the baby's bassinet following Dr Sprott's advice but now the mattress is uneven - the ends are a lot higher because of the blankets tucked underneath and the middle kind of sinks inwards. My partner and I tried about 10 different ways of folding everything to try and make the mattress flat but without success - does it matter??? I am just being paranoid?! |
