My big baby has chicken pox . But of course coz she is one of *my* kids, nothing is ever straightforward *rolls eyes*. She isn't itching at all despite being covered in spots.
She first came out in a "pimple" on her bottom on Tues, last night she was covered in spots so I took her to the after hours and the doctor there swore it wasn't chicken pox coz she wasn't itchy at all. The worst one was on the side of her vagina, and of course the stupid doctor wants to do a swab to find out what it is, so he had to pierce it with a needle. My poor baby cried and cried, I felt so awful, so violated for her, it was horrible.
Then off we went to Butterfly Creek this morning to meet Danni and James and Kelly and Isla (and Kelly's mum) thinking whatever it was wasn't contagious coz the doctor promised it wasn't. I took her back to the doctor this afternoon coz she was getting worse, and again they said it wasn't chickenpox coz it wasn't itching. Till she asked the senior doctor to have a look and he said itch or no itch it's chicken pox, and that is the end of that.
So she is dosed up on Pamol and Brufen and antibiotics coz some of the spots are infected where the idiot doctor pierced them last night, and she's all cuddled up on the couch feeling generally miserable.
Willie is staying home tomorrow to sit with her so I can take the gremlins to Plunket in the morning, and watch them all while I go to a meeting in the afternoon, which is a rare thing for him, usually he moans and whinges about time off. But even he can see how miserable our poor wee girl is.
In a way I'm glad she's got them coz it gets them over and done with. But so help me God the gremlins will be next

Oh and she has them in her mouth, throat, even inside her vagina the poor wee thing. And the ones on her girly bits are hurting her every time she goes to the toilet

I really hope Maya feels better soon. She didnt look good at all today, poor thing. I guess not having the itch is a bonus tho, cos that can be really nasty. Hope the gremlins dont become spot monsters too!

Nope, she definitely wasn't her usual happy self. I just feel sooooo guilty, I'd hate James and Isla to get them. Am hoping there's some truth in the old wives tale that they're no longer infectious once the spots appear.
And BS I think you guys should be OK, she must have contracted them right around the time we left coz incubation is 10-14 days so even if she had picked them up by the last time we saw you I doubt she would have been contagious. Fingers crossed!
The people on the plane might not be so lucky tho!

aww its awful. brooke got them at 5 months - from where i do not know. And like poor maya it was in her girly bits. pinetarsal was great to bath her in and I gave her at least 3 or 4 a day as she was covered in them. And a friend brought her child round just before the spots and when she had the spots and didn't get them so heres hoping she didn't pass them on.

Thanks Ann, I didn't think of Pinetarsol! The doctor gave us some Calamine lotion for if they start to itch, but at the moment the only ones causing her discomfort are the ones on her girly bits and I can't put calamine down there, but a soak in Pinetarsol might help. Thanks!

Cool baths are nice, even if she wears a tog-top and just bathes her bottom a couple of times a day.

Don't worry too much if the twins get them Emma. The younger they get it the easier it is on them. Brooke got them at one year old and she was happy as. The older you are when you get them the more you suffer.

Poor wee Maya . We got worried when Caprece was 5 days old cos Jack came out in a funny looking rash and I was so worried for Caprece but the midwife said if she got them we probably wouldn't even know so if the gremlins do get them they should be fine.

Poor Maya! Pinetarsol will be excellent or else you can use baking soda/powder (sorry can't remember which but I'm sure if you google you'll find out )
Think they are contagious until the last spot has scabbed over?

they are air-borne contagious until the spots come out and then conagious if the pus from the spots gets on you - until they scab over.
poor miss maya. hopefully if the gremlins do get them, they'll be like Jake who had about 20 spots all up, and didn;t feel sick at all - just annoyed me at wantting to be outside all hte time.

Aww poor Maya! Apparently when I had them the first time I had them EVERYWHERE too
How long does it take to come out if you're gonna get it? We saw you a couple of days before you left
She should be fine if she hasn't got them by now aye?

awe- poor maya, it must be awful. and emma dont feel bad, you took her to the doctor and believed she didnt have them or that she was contagious so its not your fault you'd think a doctor would be pretty reliable giving an answer.
hope that maya gets better quickly

Preventing infection
Chickenpox is most infectious from two days before the rash is present until after scabs have formed on the sores - this takes about seven days. Do not send your child to school or preschool during this time.

Chickenpox infection tends to be milder the younger a child is and symptomatic treatment, with a little sodium bicarbonate in baths or antihistamine medication to ease itching,[6] and paracetamol (acetaminophen) to reduce fever, are widely used. Ibuprofen can also be used on advice of a doctor. There is no evidence to support the topical application of calamine lotion, a topical barrier preparation containing zinc oxide in spite of its wide usage and excellent safety profile.[7].
Hoped this can be of some help.

Big huge to Miss Maya!
Poor wee thing.
At least if the Gremlins do get it too, they'll all be over and done with for good. (hopefully, unless they're freaks like me who get everything twice!)

Awwww, that SUX for you guys. Can children drink Ural? Just wondering if that will help with the whole wees aggravating her spots problem.
I was older when I caught them, and had them internally too... just trying to remember what helped my sore throat... Jelly. Nice cool jelly was good, I remember that much. And cool, damp flannels to press on my skin every now and then. I'll let you know if I remember anything else. I hope she's better soon.

That which doesn't kill me can only make me stronger blah blah blah ...
She is a lot happier today, and the spots are starting to dry up, she was quite itchy last night, but (and I'm holding my breath as I type this) I think we might have gotten off very lightly. If this is as bad as it gets we're sweet. Knock on wood, sod off Murphy!

Aw Emma, it sucks seriously, Ayja had them bad as too in her mouth and stuff and they took days to dry up cos each time one lot would start crusting over then more would appear on top of them.
I thought PAris had them bad - till ayja got them, man that was one miserable time of it.
Here's hoping she gets all better quickly and that if the gremlins get them they aren't too spottified.
