a couple of people have "suggested" that Caitlin doesn't need a bottle with teat anymore because she is having her water/juice in a sports bottle with a straw (or mini pump bottle) and her milk in a sippy cup. Her only bottles (with teats) are the 4pm supper time and 7pm bedtime.
I can't see any pros OR cons in keeping her on bottles with teats until she is old enough and able to have a big girl cup?!?!? ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I kept up with Ella's bottles with teats until she decided she didn't want them anymore. I think she was about 18 months or so.
She was only having one bottle at night by that stage but it never occurred to me to change it to a sipper! I don't think there's any 'right' way to do it, so if she's happy swapping between teats and sippers I wouldn't worry about changing. ------------- Mel, Mummy to E: 6, B: 4 and:

It's just when you are ready. Because we didn't do formula, we were on sipper cups only at 12mos and no more feeds from that point (just water, milk, milo). -------------  |

Andrew stopped at about 18 months old. At that age he was only having a bottle at preschool and one at night. Preschool started by taking away the bottle first and then I did at night. He was fine with it. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

We're kind of in the same position actually...My mum gives Alyssa a bottle with teat for milk when I'm at work, although since I'm still breastfeeding she isn't interested in a bottle from me (I really must get around to weaning haha). I don't reckon it's an issue considering they are already drinking from straws and sippy cups anyway? It's just a nice way for them to wind down and get ready for a sleep

I have never thought of when to get rid of the bottle. Tyrell is only having a bottle at bed time now. (with a teat) Maybe I will try a sippy cup and see what happens....... |

maddy only has 2 bottles a day now in the morning and at night i have tried to give her milk in a sipper cup but she won't take it that way. -------------

You know I will not worry about the bottle at this stage at all. Babies and toddlers still have a need to suck. Just as long as they will take some stuff from a sippy cup I wouldnt worry at all. McKayla still has boob and never really took to a bottle or a dummy. But at a year she started wanting her hot chock at night in a bottle. She takes everything else from a sippy cup. (I got her onto a cup from the word go). If the bottle is not in the cupboard for her milk at night she goes for the sippy cup.

Like I said kiddies still have a need even up to 5 to suck. I think we actually try to make kids grow up too fast sometimes. Who walks faster, who give the boob up first. Who didnt give boob up first. Kiddies sleeping through at night ect ect. Hey these kids will do everything and anything when they are ready for it. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Cailin is over 2 and she still has her bottle with teat once or twice a day. There is something about teeth that they recommed not to use a teat when the can use a cup..but I can't think for the life of me why so I have kept up with Cailin using a bottle ------------- http://tickers.families.com">

same goes with milk or anything really cause the sucking action activates saliva which is what does the damage.. that applies to going to sleep with it anyway, or even constantly sucking on it. i know the dental nurse didnt like that toby went to bed with a sippy cup of milk. |

I introduced a sippy cup at 6-8mths with all of my kiddies with water in. Bottles and formula got chucked at 12mths and they only have water or full fat milk. We just stopped giving Kayla a bottle at night about 2 months ago, she would ask and we just said "nah you dont need one, would you like a cuddle" she would run off not wanting a cuddle and forgot she had asked for a bottle, in the mornings she has started asking for a coffee lol So she has a milky milo in her cup, this just started cause dad had time off work and made her a "coffee" every morning. I would stop giving them bottles and try and distract them so you dont get a melt down, just try it and see, we thought noooo Kayla still loves her night time bottles, but it turned out she wasnt that fussed at all, just too used to having one! ------------- Kayla Rose is now 4! James Sydney is nearly 2! |

I think as long as they are able to drink from sippy cups etc as well then it's no big deal. I put chloe on a non spill sippy cup at 5mths as well as BF but it was more of a toy with water in it than anything else.
I took the bottles away from Miya at 10mths but only because she would bite off bits of the teat and I was worried she would choke. Thats probably the only time that they shouldn't have bottles. And I think most teats these day come in the oradontic(sp?) design so they don't harm their teeth. |

Ok I must be a bad mummy or maybe just lazy, my older girls both had bottles until they turned 4!!!! When I finally told them that big girls don't need bottles and we put then in the bin together and they were fine with that.( I had warned them before their b'day that this would happen) Neither of them even asked again. By then they were only having one bottle in the evening anyway and it really didn't bother me much. Oh and both girls teeth were fine. They had the bottle then brushed and went to bed. They have only ever had water in any type of drink bottle/sipper cup from then on and juice only out of a glass (when they got older). The dental nurse said it is sipper bottles with juice that are the problem with the front tooth decay as they suck the juice through the front teeth and the constant intake of sugar during the day not just in one hit. |
