Please feel free to copy the text below and forward it on.  I wrote it because the petition that has been so widely circulated serves no purpose other than to break people's hearts and make them feel quite sick.  There is also something seriously dodgy about how those quotes, photos and info became public.  This isn't about rules being broken though, it's about the fact that well-meaning people with kind hearts are passing this on, thinking it'll make a difference, and the petition doesn't have any standing or ability to do so, instead it's just causing grief.

The following petition has been widely circulated... you've probably received it - it begins with:

"FROM HAPPINESS TO HELL
Page 1 of 4 View as a single page 5:00AM Saturday May 12, 2007
By  Elizabeth Binning

Ngatikaura Ngati was removed from a loving home and sent to live with
abusive birth parents..."

The photos attatched to the file are particularly disturbing - they are postmortem photographs of a child and their severe injuries.  While I fervently agree with tougher sentences being handed down to people committing these sorts of crimes against children, it's only fair to warn you that this petition 'signed' electronically won't be accepted by parliament, so won't help to bring about tougher sentencing.  This makes me question the author's purpose of the e-mail.  I have contacted the author some time ago, and have not heard back from them.  As this is a real NZ case, I am not sure that this is a hoax, but possibly a well-intended attempt to achieve something good, that's been done in an ineffective way.  Please feel free to pass this on, and if you're interested in making a difference with this sort of thing, keep an eye out for petitions that you can sign by hand (full name, address included)... and anyone can start one up to present to parliament if they wish!

I whole heartedly agree with you. Well done for writing that and voicing your concerns. I received that petition twice. I just couldnt believe that people were emailing those photos around. Truely heartbreaking.

Nice One Andie.

I recieved a similar petition with pics for another child abuse case, it breaks my heart that people would email them around.

I'd happily sign a proper petition but not the email ones. Those I just delete. You're right that they have no standing so why cause futher grief?

Thanks for that Andie, I have received the named email so many times and from people that utterly surprised me I have to admit that I deleted it everytime and got such a fright and felt so sick the first time I received it, to sign an email petition to me is a waste of time and I would happily sign one that was handed to me, well done you!

I got that email and I sent it on without the pictures I felt they were unnecessary. Good on you Andie for doing something
