Before I go any further... no I'm not pregnant

DH and I always talk about names and I did that name genie thing that was posted about, and it suggested Ariana and I love it!!!

BUT... (this is not intened to offend anyone!!)

Do you think it is too 'maori' sounding for a 'white' family???? (because it's sound so nice with the r rolled) I just love the name (and also like Ari for short) but don't know if it would suit a white girl? Our last name is Kurth, so it goes quite well with that...

I like it too! And no I don't think it is too Maori. I went to school with an Aroha and she was a blondie! Now I think that is too Maori (again no offence intended to anyone!)

Ariana's a pretty name and is of Welsh origin (I looked it up but I originally thought Spanish). I don't think it sounds wrong for a white girl. The r rolling makes quite a difference but more and more Maori names are becoming common for whites and Maoris alike, so I don't think it would seem funny.

I see it more of a Maori name as I know a lot of Maori girls with this name and only one is white and she doesn't suit her name at all and her parents pronouced it Ara-ana and its not nice. But it does go nice with your surname.

I like it and don't think it sounds Maori at all, sounds English, which would explain its Welsh origins. Reminded me more of a name of a ship.

You know what I also love the name Ariana and I think that is the name of Dumbledore's sister in the Harry Potter book. Anyway that is where I saw the name and I love it. Hubby sort of likes it.

And no I dont know anything about Maori culture at all but I dont think it sound like it at all. I mean hubby wants to call another girl Mischka if we have one. (dont even know what it sounds like.) I will use a name if we like it no matter where it comes from.

I don't think of it as a Maori name either, I went to school with an Ariana and she wasn't Maori.

One thing to think about tho is whether people will pronounce it properly. Willie wanted to call Maya Mereana and I liked it but I couldn't bear the thought of hearing her called Mary-arna by well meaning Pakehas (my family included). So we stuck to Maori middle names, and Willie still gets angsty when the dispatcher says Tay-Irri-rang-y on the RT coz that's not how you pronounce it.

i think it's a beautiful name anna, not 'too maori' at all! the name genie gave us jackson for a boy so that's close and the girl name was marissa. i would definately use that name if we had another girl, i didn't even think of it before

I think Ariana is really nice! Name Genie gave us the exact name that I have picked for a girl, IF we have another!

That name genie is so much fun!  I found one on there for us that I thought 'perfect if we have another girl'... then promptly forgot it!

I LOVE the name Ariana - it's beautiful!  It's not a Maori name, so doesn't seem Maori-styles to me at all.  Though we're a Pakeha family and my sister is Kiri, and she suits the name beautifully, and I would name a girl 'Aroha' if DH liked the name too.  Nothin' wrong with borrowing a pretty name from another culture!
