She said if you do, dont be embarrest its natural.
As for the placenta I was still standing and they had just given Bailey to me (up under my legs) and she asked again if I wanted the injection, I said yes. I gave Bailey to the other midwife who wrapped him in a towl and gave him straight to Jamie (this was great... Jamies first hold, and I didnt mind as I was preoccupied I climbed up onto the bed and 10 minutes later at 11.57 the placenta was 'born'
as for getting cleaned up, they covered me in towels straight away and was given back bailey... we then proceded to have our first feed, which lasted 1 hour, I then got up and had a shower and the rest of the family arrived a couple of hours later

Sorry for the novel hehehehe
I decided I wanted a natural labour and third stage (placenta) because I didn't like the thought of having the baby and then being rushed to get the placenta out. I wanted time to bond with the baby and let things slowly happen in their own time. In my birth plan I stated this. So that's what we did. The placenta followed naturally about 10-15 minutes after Joey was born and it wasn't painful or anything, nothing at all like pushing Joey out!!

Witht he poo thing... I think it is totally normal and although it happened to me I was never aware of it because my midwife just quietly and calmly wiped everything away and noone mentioned anything.... It happens to everyone, LOL, and believe me... you won't even care!!!!

In the end, I had a water birth and the water was not bloody or gross.

Placenta, had to get out of the pool to deliver it. Don't really remember it. Your midwife can give you an injection to hurry it up or you can decide to go naturally, the conversation should come up in reference to your birth plan. I do not remember if it were painful, but I do remember that my midwife tried to show it to me but I am a bit too squeamish for that!

I didn't poo during the birth either, I can imagine that pooing in the pool would've less than attractive. I wouldn't worry about that tho, at the time you will have far too many other things to think about!

(no where near as painful when giving birth, but suprised me all the same)

I don't know if I pushed anything out (*ahem* poo) and I don't want to know. Apparently most people are worried about that, so don't feel weird. Also, the placenta thing is easy compared to the baby thing, by then you will be so blissed out over your little creation, and like they all say, you won't give a fiddlers' what you look like. It was just me, DH and baby for about an hour or so after, which was really amazing. We didn't even ring or tell anyone till about and hour and a half after He was born, we let the midwife clean him up etc then. It was really special knowing we were the only ones who knew about him for that very short time. A special secret!
Alas, I rant again..

Ummm, well you push the baby out and then usually (but not always) you get a little injection (you dont even feel it cos you are looking at your little bubs and feeling VERY relieved) which makes the placenta come away quicker and less chance of postpartum haemorrhage. By the time my baby was out, weighed and wrapped etc, the placenta was out and dealt with - no drama, I didnt really notice it. They just pushed on my tummy a little bit. I had a sheet over me and stayed in delivery room for about an hour before I got up and had a shower. My mum was waiting outside and came in about 5 mins after Hannah came out. There is lots of blood and stuff, but seriously you wont care about it and if family do come in they will have eyes only for the baby - plus you'll be looking less than glamorous anyway so a bit of blood isnt so bad!!

And the pooing thing - pretty sure I didnt but dont want to know if I did. Midwives see it all the time and just discretly clean it up. One of the signs of early labour is going to the toilet lots so your bowel is empty when you are actually pushing (thats what happened to me).

Hope that helps

Edited by aimeejoy

    Author: mrs frantic
Subject: 1738
Posted: 08 March 2006 at 4:57pm

OK I have just started to think about the actual process of giving birth, and I realised I am not sure what actually happens. I mean, I know you push the kid out right? But then do you have to push more stuff out, is there like two parts? And does it take long? I guess I was just wondering cos i imagined pushing thsi baby out and then eveyrone running in to see it but what if i am still pushing out all the other stuff - that would be a bit wierd? Also I was wondering about *cough ahem aham* bowel movements. I have heard you can have them and this scares the life out of me - I just find the whole thought so humiliating! So for the ladies who have done it, can you please tell me exactly what happens, do you push baby out then have to push more stuff out, and does it take long, and do they clean you up before they let the rest of the family in, and is it common to have "äccidents" - I know it's gross but I just think that if I know what to expect I can come to terms with it before the day...?
TIA!

Edited by mrs frantic
