I would definitely be asking for one! Jess is right, I had a scan at 11-12 weeks for NT and my results went down to 1:55 - and I was only 26 (so considered low risk)! I had to have a CVS but the piece of mind was wonderful.

Definatly having a 12 week scan! One of the first things my Dr asked was if I wanted the NT scan! And I am only 25 so "low risk" still... although like Amma said, you dont 'really' know if you are low or high risk until you have the test!

hi there

The NT screening test is for EVERY pregnant woman regardless of age. It picks up the babies who may be high risk.

If you are under34 years of age you are considered lower risk but no one knows the high and low risk pregnancies until they do the screening test.

Everyone is entitled - I would ask to be referred for your 12/40 week scan.

I guess it depends on mw and DHB that you live in. In Otago, every woman routinely gets the option of having a NT scan at 12 weeks, some choose to take it and others not. I take it, not because of me being a high-risk but because I cant wait to see the baby.

In our DHB region, the scans cost $25 each for the first three, then after that are free. Bollocks to the radiation theory!!!!!  As lady_aset said..its sound waves.  It bothers me that some MWs dont seem to know basic science.  I had one tell me that I couldnt eat parsley because cats pee on it and therefore it is high risk for listeria (WTF???).....I googled and it is coz parsley tea used to be used to cause abortion...sorry off topic.

um, sorry to put this to you, but an ultrasound scan does not use radiation AT ALL!!! it only uses a high frequency of sound to see the baby (and sound waves ain't radiation), which does not cause damage at all to tissue. Have no idea where your midwife got that idea from.

Hence why I said she is no good. I do have a couple of stories about her from 2 ggod friends if you want to hear them.

I think it depends on the MW. The 1st MW I went under here in Tauranga didnt want me to have a dates scan even though I requested it she still wouldnt give me the form so I changed MW's (Im not saying you should change MW's thats just me) & my MW now is sooooo cool I had my first scan at about 7 weeks then I had another at 9 coz I bleed abit & another one at 12wks NT scan ( I think everyone is entitled to a NT scan regardless of high risk or not, Well they do it here for anyone) & I just had one yesterday 20wk scan & I've got another one in 4 weeks & then I know I'll probably have one around 32-36 weeks.... Go to your GP and they will get one arranged for you if you really want to have one..... We were given the choice if we wanted the scan or not. We had it because we wanted to see our baby, nothing could ever describe how that first scan made us feel (as you all well know!!). Because it was optional we paid $40. The anatomy scan at 20 wks was free and then we had to have another at 28 wks as baby wasn't in a good position earlier and htey didn't get all the measurements, free too. We had wanted to go to Akl for 3D/4D scan and our mw was happy to refer us but she also mentioned she wasnt sure about those scans as she worried perhaps the heat from the scan could upset the baby. We figured that if they were done everyday there shouldnt be a problem. But then didn't have it done anywy cause was just too expensive to get to Akl etc etc - sorry, way off topic!!
If you are too late for the nuchal, just insist that you would like a scan for piece of mind (she gave you one earlier). My later scans with Spencer at the hospital were free but all the standard scans I have had to pay $55 for. I just suppose the CDHB is stingy. No i didn't think 28 was old either but when you look at the risk difference between say 20 and 28 its quite large. far out cuppatea, that sucks that you have to pay that much! It's $20 here, unless you want recording of it and then it's $30, from memory. But my MW signed something so we would get it for free (don't know what that was)... and we just paid the $10 extra to get a DVD made. The emergency scans I had were all free and I don't remember paying anything for the dating scan either.

That's what a couple of different MWs (I asked around) told me too - I kicked up a bit of a stink cause everyone I knew had a 12 week and she wasn't going to give me one. unfortunately, by the time she got around to telling me I could just pay for one independently, I was over 13 weeks and it was too late anyway...

I guess there's good arguments on both sides but I reckon if you really want a scan you'll just stress out if you don't have one and that's not good for baby either!

What do you mean because of your age - I wouldn't have thought 28 was very old to be pregnant! My first midwife was anti scan but still referred us when we said that's what we wanted. My midwife this time said because of my age it would be best to have one (i'm 28). I had a few scans with both bubs - just to make sure all is well - as I had bleeding both times. I never got offered a scan at twelve weeks

the most i got at twelve weeks was to hear babies heartbeat for the first time (which was amazing of course )

I'm sure they have their reasons for not giving them...I asked about an early scan and my midwife said she really doesn't like booking people in for them unless there's a reason, that there still could be risks/effects from scans that we don't know about (her words were that it took 50 years for them to figure out that x-rays were bad for unborn babies and scans haven't been around that long) and that the less you interfere with them the better as far as she's concerned. I had a number of early scans due to history of twins and unsure of dates with Josh and I was in Palmy for them. My MW wrote some strange things on the scan form so I could get them for free (I think it was the twin thing) otherwise if there was no reason I would of had to pay for it.

It seems to depend on your area a lot. From what I've seen on here, a 12 week scan seems to be the norm for Aucks people. In Palmy, it's nearly always only a 20 week scan unless your LMC is concerned about something. Depends on your MW I guess. My MW last time sent me for a dating scan, but said I was low risk for downs and didn't send me for a 12 week scan (although I'm sure she would have if I had insisted). Then I had the anatomy scan. I had about 6 more scans after that due to complications though.

This time she is booking me in for a dating scan, but I doubt I will get the 12 week one again (same MW). i never had a dating scan so i got a 12week scan n now i wish id insisted on a dating scan cus my dates were bit weird.........................

i'm in palmy and just assumed it was the done thing to have a scan at 12 weeks and one at 20ish! this time around i had three :) (never had to ask for them)
i was 23 with my first and 24 with this one.

i think piece of mind is a wonderful thing!

im 20 and my doctor also insisted i go for a scan at 12 weeks.
it was at the 12 week mark that a friend of mine received terrible news, that her baby had an abnormality with its skull development and if she went through to full term, it was likely her baby would die in the first few days of life.
if they can detect that at such an early stage, then it seems extremely important to have that first scan, just to be sure.

My midwife insisted I have a nuchal scan done, even though I am 23!!! She just said that she refers all of her patients for one, including a dating scan a month before the nuchal scan.

I asked my MW and she saidthey didnt do them until 18-20 weeks, was gutted too because i really wanted to see baby. I didnt know you could pay for them though, will phone on monday and see if i can do that (im too impatient to wait). i got one done at 9 weeks because I was unsure of dates. Danaj, I am surprised but then I am old compared to you so I guess it was taken for granted I would have a 12 week scan! Guess it may depend on what part of the country you live in? Two workmates of mine (both just under 30) had scans. Not always I wasn't suppose to get a 12 week one but managed to convince her I needed it for dating. My midwife said I didn't need one but that if I wanted one she'd send off for an appointment (it's not funded in our area, so if you want one you have to pay).

I went for my 12 week app with the MW the other day and was expecting to have a scan booked.

She told me They're not usually done unless you're over 34 years old and she only gives them if you really insist or if there is a medical reason. She saw no reason for me to have a 12 week scan and then said I should wait till the 20 week mark.
