Topic: Too early for a growth spurt??Posted: 10 October 2006 at 3:05pm |

Maddie has been really unsettled during the day the last couple of days and while she is sleeping a bit longer and better at night, during the day she is pretty darn hungry and demanding her bottles closer together.
She has gone from feeding 4 hourly to 3 hourly today especially and her last feed she downed a record 120mls (double the amount the forumla can reakons she'd be having! Could this be an early growth spurt? I thought they didn't happen until around 3 weeks?

No they can happen any time I think. Jacob seemed to be in one constant one off and on for about 3 weeks, from 2 weeks old. It tapers off around 12 weeks, after a really big one!

It is just a guideline. Every baby is different (as with everything lol).. Ella went through a feeding frenzy every so often and you just go with it.. it doesn't last all that long (usually a week but sometimes longer)

Ben had his first growth spurt at 2 weeks and second at 6. Midwife had warned me to expect them then, so perhaps Maddy is just a little advanced for her age???

My MW said if the baby is late then a growth spurt can be early.

Sounds like a growth spurt to me too. My guess is that her feeds will settle down again in a few days.

I really hope so!! Today has NOT been fun in the least. She has been so unsettled only really sleeping if one of us is holding her and her feeds have been pretty frequent. I think she's also been a bit windy so I've given her some gripe water which seems to have helped.
Fingers crossed we get *some* sleep tonight. We're both knackered!

Thriving Under Five (great book!) says expect growth spurts at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 weeks
we had spurts around 2, 4, 6 and 8, yet to see the 12 week one.

Olivia had major growth spurts for the first 6 weeks. Ignore what the side of the can says as it is complete crap. Olivia is meant to be on 1000mls but takes approx 750 the minimum intake for an infant to have of fluids is 600mls, anything over that is fantastic. I believe we left hospital and Olivia was straight into the 150mls for a few weeks till the reflux kicked in.

Lol Jacks first growth spurt was at one day, I was still in hospital and the midwife put him in bed with me.
Growth spurts can happen at any time |
