I am 27 weeks preggers with my 5th child!! problem is i m paranoid about listeria! How does everyone else feel about this? How careful are you? Has anyone known someone thats got it? Symptoms? (what you read is so broad!) Would love to hear others thoughts

I was obsessive about isteria when I was preg with Maya. Totally obsessive. I lived on toast and marmite for weeks (I also had bad morning sickness) coz I knew they were 'safe'.

If it helps, I found some stats when I was preg for the year 2001, and there were 200,000+ confirmed pregnancies and only 3 reported cases of listeria. So that's like a fraction of a fraction of a percentage. That didn't ease my mind tho - I was paranoid about being one of the 3!

The symptoms are mild fever, headache, aches and pains and possibly vomiting, but you can also have listeriosis without being sick, coz listeria can affect your baby without affecting you.

Also, my midwife gave me a comprehensive list of risky foods that was published by the Auckland District Health Board and it's called "Food Safety in Pregnancy". I found it really helpful.

thanks for your replies. Emma it was great to hear the stats you gave me - makes it look almost impossible to get!! I look at some woman I know eating whatever they want, it seems that even then you have a very low risk!
But still i worry!! I guess the fact that im having a girl after 4 boys doesnt help!! Makes the pregnancy even more precious .

I have that food safety in pregnancy pamphlet - seems really over the top (use butter within two days etc). I worry mainly about food when eating out when you cant be sure of their practices and try not to eat out often!! But its hard!!!

This is our first baby and like most I am overly paranoid.

I also follow the booklet....but I don’t eat any thing from the food bars, like samies, pies etc.
I don’t eat salad.....even subway.

I tell the burger joints to skip the mayo. I don’t eat pita bread/samies/ etc with smoked salmon, smoked chicken or any other smoked fish/meat. I don’t eat prawns, shrimp etc (specially from the Chinese restaurants) unless it was cooked at home

My mum laughs at me...she says when she was pregnant with both her children she ate what ever she wanted (and my mum is from Ukraine...so their food included allot of salad and smoked meat/fish...even fish cooked with salt and vinegar, so practically raw fish)

But I am extra extra careful.

My friends thought I was losing the plot when I was preg with Maya. I slept most of the day coz of the morning sickness, wouldn't go out coz I felt so awful, and when I did go out I refused to eat. Most of my friends who have kids don't bother with avoiding anything, and with Willie being Maori, some of his rellies even eat raw shellfish when preg. But I was just so worried I would never have forgiven myself if I had hurt the baby.

I did eat ham on xmas day tho, I just heated it till it just about exploded! And I did eat hard cheese and butter that had been kept in the fridge.

the thing i found hardest was avoiding the soft-serve ice-creams since they can contain raw egg products.. not easy int he middle of summer when all you want is a yummy ice-cream with sprinkles and flakes etc.

I avoid all deli stuff, any chicken i haven't cooked myself, and basically everything that has already been said. I too was very paranoid about the fact that it can affect the baby without you really getting too many symptoms at all.

my mum's the same.. she always goes "oh, in my day, we ate anything we wanted"

i always tell her that "in her day" food was usually preparred and eaten the same day, it was fresh, had very little likelihood of being stored somewhere for months etc.. and also bugs etc have become a lot more advanced and dangerous now. come on, in her day, the choice of takeaway foods was fish and chips and thats it. lolol

so you guys would still eat things like McD's, Wendys etc?

I do know that mayo used in burgers etc is safe as it is mass produced (like mayo in supermarkets) its cooked when its made so its ok and they would would use it so quickly.

I went to a cafe last week and ordered a BLAT that had aaoli (spelling??) dressing. The waitress had noticed i was pregnant and informed me the the dressing had raw egg in it - if i wanted to change my mind! I nearly kissed her!! I would have eaten it and not known!!

What do u guys reckon about bacon??

I told you I was paranoid. Tho I know that the Mayo is okay...I still dont eat it.

Wendy's is the only thing close to work...so that's what I have nearly every second day (to lazy to make lunch).

Sorry, I dont eat bacon....ever!

Man i thought i was paranoid.  I eat mcdonalds with the mayo just no lettuce or i get the nuggets or cheese burger, i don't eat deli food, i eat ham but on toasted sandwiches so it's been heated so if listeria is present it is killed, didn't know about the whole butter thing, i think there's being careful and then there's being stupid, but i guess its just for 9 months and its to keep our baby (or babies in my case) safe and healthy.  As long as its fresh and hot i think its fine.

It must be a mum thing Janine my mum says the same thing.

Before I knew about listeria I craved luncheon sausage and ate heaps of it. Then when I found out it wasn't safe I freaked out for days that it had hurt baby. I didn't eat McDonalds or anything like that, mainly because the thought of it made my stomach churn. Just driving past a KFC, the smell was enough that I had to pull over and be sick
But the mayo is 100% safe coz it is made from powdered egg which is highly processed. Do look out for mayo in flasher restaurants tho coz if they make their own they usually make it from egg yolk.

wow. I never even thought about custard, and had no idea about soft-serve.....i guess it goes to show, that unless you cook it yourself from scratch, you can never be sure it's safe...and even then some of my cooking attempts are not too safe i think!

Wow its so amazing what we can't eat or what we thought we could eat and then somebody says "nah you can't eat that".  They say to eat healthy while pregnant and a wide range of foods but they make it so hard when we aren't aloud to touch most of it.

But then I found out all the things you can and can’t do...can and can’t eat.......

But hopefully at the end of all this I will have the most precious thing...my baby!!!
And I am sure it is worth every thing I had to give up for the last 9 months.

I just stick to my plain old cheese scone from the cafe.. heated up with butter, and a choccy milk in a bottle. lol.

wheni was preggy with paris, i ate a heap of those double bacon cheese burgers from Md's cos they were so good, but i felt guilty.

I'm the same as you Emma... before i found out i was having paris, i had been coming home from work every day and eating about 10 - 12 snax crackers with luncheon and cheese on them... I just thought i had been working so hard i was hungry. but worried heaps once i found out the real reason i was eating so much.

I love wendy's flake shakes etc.. but usually stick to the plain scoop icecreams when preggy.

It's so hard, cos at the time when you want so many different things the most.. half of them you shouldn't eat.

hey yeah - always remember that cereal is a GREAT snack.. not just for brekky.. it's healthy and you can add fruit and all that, and you get calcium too from the milk... i usually have a couple of plates of that a day. lol.

Talking about cereal, I forced myself to eat a bowl of cereal with milk and fruit every morning when I was preg, even if I felt really sick, coz I figured at least bubs was getting some food, even if I threw up non stop for the rest of the day. I think that's the reason why I will never eat honey puffs or tinned apricots again...

I love Special K....That’s what I ate before I got Pregnant and I still eat that each morning with a Banana.

As I have no morning sickness, I practically eat every thing (well the stuff I am allowed anyway).

I eat any thing from Indian, Russian, Thai, and Malay...every thing (aha!..I think I just found the cause behind my lovely weight gain.... )

i was a bit paranoid too... but by the time the prem risk was over i decided that hannah was probably safe enough and indulged in brie and smoked salmon!

my mum was a bit funny with my fear of listeria, my argument was that the health authorities wouldn't make such a big deal about it if there wasn't a real risk... but then looking at the stats it doesn't seem very big at all.

didn't realise custard was really bad tho had massive cravings for custard squares. oh well!

Hi Guys,

I heard pre-cooked meats are good carriers of listeria. I must admit to craving ham with abby so I stuck to Huttons kiwi ham on the rare occasion as a treat. As my father works there and I know they have vigirous testing of all their meats. Most meat born listeria is picked up before the meat hits the shelf.

I was talking to my Aunty who works in a Ice Cream Parlour and i asked her about soft serve ice creams and she said that the Frosty Boy soft serve is made from powder and water they put it in the machine and it comes out soft serve and the same with frozen yoghurt unless its the real thing of course, so not really sure how you could get listeria from something that is made from powder and water.

Raw eggs (and powders with raw eggs) are not recommended because they might have salmonella rather than listeria... which is only killed when they are cooked (or pastuerised).    So there's something else to worry about.

At my first ante-natal class, one of the other ladies terrified us all by saying just about everything was bad for you... food heated in microwave, antacids (have aluminum, which can give you alzheimers), tinned fish (can have too much mercury) and a whole list of other stuff.

Aparently one of the worst things for listeria is rice that has been sitting around for any length of time (which is why even vegetarian sushi is bad). I heated my rice pudding so hot, that when I took it out of the microwave, it popped, and splashed on me... I ended up with a small blister on my face and one on my arm - so food safety can actually harm you!

right this is an old topic but thought I would bump it to get opinions from others. All I really want is a mock cream donut (like the ones that quality bakers do) but have kept away from them. So to make a long story short

Does anyone know for sure if mock cream is safe?

Most recipes use butter, sugar, water and vanilla essence, and the whole idea of it is that it does not need refigeration, it will actually separate if you do refrigerate it. I am going to say that it prob would not worry me, but then again I am not preg so it really is your preference.

Mock cream is fine if you eat it fresh- just like real cream. If you are being cautious you would be fine to eat mock cream if you made it yourself and ate it on the day but I wouldn't recommend eating it from elsewhere as it could be a few days old and thats when the listeria can breed. For those who are having soft cheese cravings there are some pasturised non-mould ripened cheeses out there that are ok- you'll just have to read a few labels, most supermarkets stock 1 or 2.

Its so nice to hear that there are others like me!!! I got a realy hard time when I was pregnant with Charlotte about how cautious I was. Some of my work collegues seemed to take it as a personal insult that I wouldn't eat things they did when they were pregnant. They sometimes got really angry at me and that horrible saying 'well I did it when I was pregnant and my kids turned out fine' drove me mad!! One of them (who was pregnant at the time) used to sit there eating that fried chicken that they keep under those hot lights all day telling me how silly I was and all I could think was how utterly selfish and ignorant she was.

The only takeaways I choose to eat is a quarter pounder from Maccas and I take it home and cook it to bits until its piping hot just to make sure Probably taking it a bit far but ah well.

I figure its only 8 months out of your entire life to minimise the chances of something pretty awful happening to your baby. Personally I didn't have to give up coffee or smoking so this is my thing I gave up. Then I know if anything did happen I couldn't blame myself because I had done everything I could. When I was pregnant I avoided all peanuts and peanut products and turns out Charlotte has peanut anaphylaxis- the thing I can take away from that is that I know I did absolutely everything I could and I can't blame myself at all.

I'll get down off my soap box now...

cream and custard are all fine if you know how old it is and if its been refridgerated at the temp etc, so this saying, if you make it yourself it is fine, I wouldnt trust the cream bums etc from a bakery or supermarket (I mean if you go to the bakery first thing it should ok but I dont like to risk it unless Im REALLY REALLY wanting it!)

Mock Cream is fine as like someone has meantioned it has heaps of sugar in it

Ok when I was pregnant with Andrew I was eating 3 or 4 mock cream donuts a day from a yummy bakery in Palmy. I craved them so I ate them. Then someone at my work decided to take them away from me and thought it was funny, until they found out they could be dismissed for stealing. Taking something a pregnant woman wants and craves when she is 8 months pregnant is not funny. A couple of the people that worked in my team went to the bakery and got me more donuts after they found out what had happened.

I think it was moe the they knew how much I wanted them and a couple of them had been pregnant before so knew what cravings were like.

That was a problem working with over 200 people food went missing all the time from the fridge and always happened when newbies started.

have just come back from eating off a Buffet....had mock cream so going to say it is ok....
have to say ive been more careful with seafood, sushi, soft cheeses and deli meat than anything else....have people all around me that say they ate anything but unless i saw them i dont trust them and it is my bubs!!!
Be as careful as you want sarahbeth....but im sure mock cream would be ok....hmmmm dunkin donuts tomorrow me thinks....

Not sure about mock cream - I don't really like it. I like nice freshly whipped cream and I'm sure that's fine if fresh. I'm sure the mock cream will be OK if it's fresh too - I mean if it's made with butter it can't be too good for it to be too old....

I ask brumbies to give me a call when they have creamed their jam donut fingers *drool* then I waddle round and get one...alot of my paper work has big greasy cinnamon thumbprints on it....

personally I wouldn't have buffet, as you can't be sure how hot (or cooked or old) everything is, but apart from that I have eaten more things this time around than I did with Jacob, but won't eat deli salads or meat still. went hard on cheeses a while back, I got it bad for vintage cheddar and creamy havarti *drools* with that preggy classic, pickled onions.

No real "cravings" like last time, but I do have fads, so I just go with it. i do find (as with last time) that when I feel like "something" I want it NOW. Liek today i was thinking about how much more tangier vegemite used to be, and i was watering a the mouth, i could almost smell the way it used to be,a nd I was missing it so bad!!!

Well....

That wasnt a good idea im so hungry now and all i can think about is Cream, Chesse, McDs and donughts all good info but mmmm i want it NOW might have to stop on my way home to get somthing (safe) naughty

And yes i didnt think about that my friends are big on chesse platers and i always have to sit and watch and well Salami is the killer for me salami and Chesse on crackers yummy I think i will organise my own food for my baby shower

but no i just cant my freinds think im strange not eating Tahi or Chinese or any Asian really im craving it but not happy with food sitting around so just wont and well that dosent stop my partners mum trying to serve me left over meat all the time it grates me my parnter finaly stood up for me the other night and siad i CANT have it you should have seen the look on her face and she always says but i did it and the kids are fine best defence i have to that is

There has been a lot of reaserch and advancement in food saftey and things are no longer the same as when you were pregnant

I think the Galaxy cheese is fine (Chives, Smoky, Smoked Ham, Pepper) and well gerkins or onions would go well with that mmmm maybe thats what ill buy

Speaking from a chefs p.o.v I probably would stay away from Buffets as yes you never know just how many times they have reheated their food.
Mock cream 'should' be ok but also depends on how long its been sitting around.
I hate it cause we make homemade Icecream at work and I can't have any (raw egg yolks) in fact there is soooo much yummy food we make that I just can't have. Although I admit that on the VERY rare occasion I have had SOME stuff that I know I probably shouldn't have. But then spent AGES feeling very naughty and guilty with myself.

If/when I have McD's I just ask if I can have a hot one. It must sound kinda silly to them but no one has ever batted an eyelid. You can claim a "medical condition" if you don't want everyone knowing you are preg yet.

Salami - I have now craved salami for part of two pregnancies, I never thought of it being a problem until now. But isn't it the case that the freeze-wrapped (or whatever it's called) salami/luncheon/bier sticks/etc are okay, just don't get from the deli? Every now and then I can't resist a bit of ham and I will get some from the deli but I will only eat it on the day I bought it.

As you can see, I'm not very strict on foods while preg... but then I have never had a listeria scare.

I thought salamis and this types of foods were made from raw meat then cured ? so like smoked fish ham or chicken ?? now im not so sure im going to ask a freind i know whos partners hunts and makes salami will advise

I have always asked for extra Girkin in my Mcds or Chesse and if i dont want just take out but it means you get a fresh buger especially if your getting take aways

Hey we are the customer its not as if they can say no

The best trick to play at McD's is to ask for it to be without something. I was once a McDonald's girl and was a master in the kitchen and it is the best way to get something made freshly.

So far in my pregnancy I've eaten KFC, cream, mock cream, a custard square, a chicken filled roll from a bakery and a bunch of other stuff. I think I'm lacking in paranoia. Although I have stayed away from deli meat and soft cheese, but I never wash salads, and if I drop something on the floor, I'm still going to eat it.
