I was obsessive about isteria when I was preg with Maya. Totally obsessive. I lived on toast and marmite for weeks (I also had bad morning sickness) coz I knew they were 'safe'.
If it helps, I found some stats when I was preg for the year 2001, and there were 200,000+ confirmed pregnancies and only 3 reported cases of listeria. So that's like a fraction of a fraction of a percentage. That didn't ease my mind tho - I was paranoid about being one of the 3!
The symptoms are mild fever, headache, aches and pains and possibly vomiting, but you can also have listeriosis without being sick, coz listeria can affect your baby without affecting you.
Also, my midwife gave me a comprehensive list of risky foods that was published by the Auckland District Health Board and it's called "Food Safety in Pregnancy". I found it really helpful.

thanks for your replies. Emma it was great to hear the stats you gave me - makes it look almost impossible to get!! I look at some woman I know eating whatever they want, it seems that even then you have a very low risk!
But still i worry!! I guess the fact that im having a girl after 4 boys doesnt help!! Makes the pregnancy even more precious .
I have that food safety in pregnancy pamphlet - seems really over the top (use butter within two days etc). I worry mainly about food when eating out when you cant be sure of their practices and try not to eat out often!! But its hard!!!

This is our first baby and like most I am overly paranoid.
I also follow the booklet....but I don’t eat any thing from the food bars, like samies, pies etc.
I don’t eat salad.....even subway.
I tell the burger joints to skip the mayo. I don’t eat pita bread/samies/ etc with smoked salmon, smoked chicken or any other smoked fish/meat. I don’t eat prawns, shrimp etc (specially from the Chinese restaurants) unless it was cooked at home
My mum laughs at me...she says when she was pregnant with both her children she ate what ever she wanted (and my mum is from Ukraine...so their food included allot of salad and smoked meat/fish...even fish cooked with salt and vinegar, so practically raw fish)
But I am extra extra careful.

My friends thought I was losing the plot when I was preg with Maya. I slept most of the day coz of the morning sickness, wouldn't go out coz I felt so awful, and when I did go out I refused to eat. Most of my friends who have kids don't bother with avoiding anything, and with Willie being Maori, some of his rellies even eat raw shellfish when preg. But I was just so worried I would never have forgiven myself if I had hurt the baby.
I did eat ham on xmas day tho, I just heated it till it just about exploded! And I did eat hard cheese and butter that had been kept in the fridge.

the thing i found hardest was avoiding the soft-serve ice-creams since they can contain raw egg products.. not easy int he middle of summer when all you want is a yummy ice-cream with sprinkles and flakes etc.
I avoid all deli stuff, any chicken i haven't cooked myself, and basically everything that has already been said. I too was very paranoid about the fact that it can affect the baby without you really getting too many symptoms at all.
my mum's the same.. she always goes "oh, in my day, we ate anything we wanted"
i always tell her that "in her day" food was usually preparred and eaten the same day, it was fresh, had very little likelihood of being stored somewhere for months etc.. and also bugs etc have become a lot more advanced and dangerous now. come on, in her day, the choice of takeaway foods was fish and chips and thats it. lolol

so you guys would still eat things like McD's, Wendys etc?
I do know that mayo used in burgers etc is safe as it is mass produced (like mayo in supermarkets) its cooked when its made so its ok and they would would use it so quickly.
I went to a cafe last week and ordered a BLAT that had aaoli (spelling??) dressing. The waitress had noticed i was pregnant and informed me the the dressing had raw egg in it - if i wanted to change my mind! I nearly kissed her!! I would have eaten it and not known!!
What do u guys reckon about bacon??

I told you I was paranoid. Tho I know that the Mayo is okay...I still dont eat it.
Wendy's is the only thing close to work...so that's what I have nearly every second day (to lazy to make lunch).
Sorry, I dont eat bacon....ever!

Man i thought i was paranoid. I eat mcdonalds with the mayo just no lettuce or i get the nuggets or cheese burger, i don't eat deli food, i eat ham but on toasted sandwiches so it's been heated so if listeria is present it is killed, didn't know about the whole butter thing, i think there's being careful and then there's being stupid, but i guess its just for 9 months and its to keep our baby (or babies in my case) safe and healthy. As long as its fresh and hot i think its fine.
It must be a mum thing Janine my mum says the same thing.

Before I knew about listeria I craved luncheon sausage and ate heaps of it. Then when I found out it wasn't safe I freaked out for days that it had hurt baby. I didn't eat McDonalds or anything like that, mainly because the thought of it made my stomach churn. Just driving past a KFC, the smell was enough that I had to pull over and be sick
But the mayo is 100% safe coz it is made from powdered egg which is highly processed. Do look out for mayo in flasher restaurants tho coz if they make their own they usually make it from egg yolk.

ohhh i forgot, custard is about the worst thing you can eat. Something about the powder that is used, especially custard squares. Really weird because usually i dont like custard but when i knew i couldnt have it i really wanted it.

wow. I never even thought about custard, and had no idea about soft-serve.....i guess it goes to show, that unless you cook it yourself from scratch, you can never be sure it's safe...and even then some of my cooking attempts are not too safe i think!

Wow its so amazing what we can't eat or what we thought we could eat and then somebody says "nah you can't eat that". They say to eat healthy while pregnant and a wide range of foods but they make it so hard when we aren't aloud to touch most of it.

Tell me about it........I thought being pregnant is easy.....well you know what I mean.
But then I found out all the things you can and can’t do...can and can’t eat.......
But hopefully at the end of all this I will have the most precious thing...my baby!!!
And I am sure it is worth every thing I had to give up for the last 9 months.
