Reading to your children before bed?
I'm just interested because my friend laughed at me when I told her I had started reading to Benjy at bedtime

DH read her his boating mag while she was still inside...only problem with that was i had to hear it all too!!!
WE have some books we play read to her...and her bedtime routine at moment doesnt allow for books - only cause she gets fed in dark...but I love books and reading so she has heaps of books and it is wherever whenever for her...as much as possible... for your friend to laugh is strange....reading is a skill every child should have and bonding via reading is very important....my fave book for years was a picture dictionary as a child! |

We started reading to Matt when he was a couple of months old. He loves reading now & will often go & grab a book & sit there 'reading'. I don't think she was laughing at reading in general, we read books all the time. Its a good quiet activity!
I think she just found it funny that I read him a bedtime story because she thinks he's too young to appreciate it or something. I'm going to go back to her armed with all of your relies now, 'See, I'm not weird!' Thanks! ------------- Mel, Mummy to E: 6, B: 4 and:

I don't necessarily read before bed, but at about 1 was when my girls started getting really interested in books. I don't see the problem! Briona even went through a stage where she'd get a book and come and 'plomp' down in your lap and that meant "please read this to me" -------------  |

he may not totally understand whatyou are reading to him but I am sure he appreciates quiet time with mummy and finds your voice soothing...and it gets him used to different speech patterns etc.
A friend of mine told me that reading is important as it uses are much larger vocab than we do when speaking so you will be teaching him new words. |

Benjy is 1 right? thaqt's not too early, that's perfect for getting into a bigger kids routine of reading and quiet time before bed.. definately helps once they are ready to get rid of bottle or bedtime BF cos you already have that before bed routine for them to fall back on anyway so you can just subsitute the feed for a sipper cup while you read a story.

Andrew was about 1year old when DH started reading him a book at bed time. It is is routine for bedtime now and it works really well. I was also told it is never too early to get children in to reading especially boys. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

Maya was about 6 weeks old, but she was doomed from the start, her mother is a writer so our house is literally overflowing with books
I don't read regular bedtime stories to the gremlins yet tho, mostly coz by bedtime I'm over the lot of them, but Maya reads me her reading book from preschool while I give them their bedtime bottle, so they are kind of a part of that. DH and I used to read to Kaleb while he was still a bump. Now we read to him at least 3 times a week but not always at bedtime. He loves having a book put in front of him and we've even got video footage showing him looking intently at a picture then turning head to other page.
Slightly OT I have told DH, who isn't really into reading (has dyslexia too) that I want him to try and always have a book on the go (even if he only reads a page a day) so that Kaleb gets a positive male role model with reading too (i.e. reading our own books as well as books to him). ------------- http://lilypie.com">

We do it every so often, it hasn't become part of the routine yet, as sometimes Ashlee would rather scoot around the floor after her bottle instead of sitting quietly and reading.
But on the occasion, we have got out Hairy Maclary and read her that and every so often when we're reading, she turns and looks at whoever's reading the book and smiles and laughs like she's enjoying it! I think it's great!!! Definitely feels like she's appreciating it when she does that. I don't think one is too young

DH used to regularly read bedtime stories to Isla before she was born. We didnt read her abything after she was born til she was about 5 months. Now its well and truely part of her bedtime routinue. She loves books! We lie with her on our bed and read them to her after her bath and bottle, before we put her in her cot

I read to Elle - every now and then, but not part of her bedtime routine - I'm a bit like Bombshell - Elle has 'quiet' time before bed at night. She loves (or maybe I should say - I love) the hungry Catapillar.
