Topic: Digital SLR cameras Posted: 15 October 2009 at 11:59am |
I am hoping to get a SLR camera for my birthday & christmas combined. I have been looking at the Canon 1000D as there seem to be some good specials including extra lenses and memory cards etc. We would be getting it on Interest free HP so that we can pay it off, so needs to be from a store that offers that kind of thing.
My question is for all the amazing photographers out there (Daizy, Kaiz etc) is there a particular camera you would recommend, what do you use? maybe there is something cheaper than the Canon???? I am looking at Canon SLR's as this is what I had 15 years ago when I did photography at school.

I have a Nikon D60, I like it a lot. Except it doesnt have a bracketing function (With some cameras you can take 3 images in one go and it will give you 3 different exposures to ensure you get a correct one)
It makes up for it with the RAW formatting function, so you can adjust the exposure after you've photographed.
I have heard great things about the Canons too!

I have a Nikon D40. Its not to bad although the lens that came with it is pretty average and I am dying to get a new one.
Cannons I have heard are also great, especially if that is what you are used to.
OMG Kylie, I only just realised that out about the RAW function and exposing. It all makes sense now

Canon for me too. I upgraded from the 300D last year to the 40D. I also have a Canon Ixus compact for every day use which I love to bits.
Check out dpreview if you want to compare specs etc.
What I did when I upgraded was to wait for the new Canon to come out then bought the outgoing model much cheaper. I am not a pixel junkie, 10mp was plenty for me, no need for the 15mp they were introducing, and I saved me nearly $1,000 on the deal.

I have the Sony a350. I love it. We bought it from a camera shop (rather than a department store) who sells both the Sony and the Canon and he totally talked me out of the Canon. I was all set to buy the Canon before talking to him.
It was slightly cheaper than the Canon and had some better functions I think, can't remember his reasoning. The Sony was for a twin lens kit, he also threw in a card and extra battery, so we got a really good deal in the end.
Remembered one thing he said - the Sony can take lenses from other brands, whereas the Canon can only use Canon lenses

That's not strictly true...my Canon has a 200m Sigma lens on it right now
A friend has that Sony and loves it.

I had a 400D as well and loved and it takes really nice photos. I had to do a insurance claim on it and upgraded to a 500D and it is just as good. Dh is SLR junkie and from what I could remember is to stay away from the 1000D as they weren't as good.
Go to dpreview dot com as they have got reviews on them
