Topic: info wanted....lots of info wanted...lol Posted: 21 December 2009 at 3:38pm |
Hi all,
Well, where do I begin...
I'm going to be a mum for the 2nd time but this time in New Zealand so in a sense it's just as exciting to me as the first one...
I'm originally from Holland and our first one was born there...This one we'll have here and that's why I started this subject...
Where do I start, where do I go?
When do you guys have scans here?
Same with bloodtests?
How do I get a midwife...?
I don't know...I'll have more questions as I get further along, probably more to do with the practical side of things...
Of course I've got the physical and emotional thing COMPLETELY figured out
as I'm sure you all do!
thanks for helping!

You can choose if you want to go straight to a MW or your GP. Personally I skip the GP part and go straight to a mw. Its best to get onto this asap as some areas have shortages. GPs can give you lists also there is usually a list in the medical section at the front of the phone book. Or ask for recommendations from your area on here. MW can order scans and blood work etc for you.

In some areas they only do the anatomy scan (18-20 weeks) so don't be too shocked if you aren't offered the 12 week one.
Is good to get a mw as soon as possible, might also be worth seeing a gp, my mw didn't see me until 12 weeks (was signed up with her as soon as I got a pos test though) and she gets her clients to see their gps for everything before 12 weeks. My gp was the one who did everything when I had my m/c and sent me for early scans when I got pregnant again, he also sent me for the first lot of bloods.
So in short, different mw, different health boards, and different docs so not everyone gets the exact same care. But to start with either go to your gp or to a mw and they will let you know what is best to do dependant on what system they run.

There's a really good book called the New Zealand Guide to Pregnancy (or something like that) - it's in Whitcoulls. It has lots of up to date NZ info

Thanks all of you
Will see what I can find in my area..
We're in Helensville so I guess North Shore hospital is the closest..?
But I've heard some bad things about that hospital..but then again; gossip can be bad...
So let's say they don't offer me the 12 week scan, can I go somewhere and get it anyway, even if I have to pay for it...?
how about 3d scans later in the pregnancy?

ah, and before I forget;
Does the midwife you have go to the hospital with you? Or do I need to sort out something else if I would decide to plan to go to the hospital?
Or, would it be possible that a midwife would only go to a certain horpital and not anywhere else?

I would think in Auckland you would get the 12 week scan no trouble at all. I think there is 3d scanning available as well but one of the Auckland ladies will know more than me, same goes for advice on the hospital.
Yep your midwife will go to the hospital with you, or their back up if they are already at another birth or on leave etc (mostly you get your one and you should get to meet the back up whilst pregnant so she wouldn't be a stranger to you). I'm not sure how it works totally with the hospitals, I'm in CHCH and here my mw would birth at the main hospital or at one of the birthing clinics but she didn't birth at the other 3 birthing clinics that are here, not sure if that was just her preference or if she couldn't birth women at them.
Some midwifes will do home births as well if you are keen on that idea.

I think midwives have to be 'registered' at a hospital and you have to go where they are registered. Your GP should be able to refer you to a midwife. You get the 12 and 20 week scans and if you need a growth scan after that you can have that too. You have to pay $35 for the scans so if you want one ask for one. You go for blood tests for downs syndrome around 15 weeks if needed based on the 12 week scan result and then there is iron, glucose etc around 28 weeks. There are only one or two companies in Auckland and one on the shore that does the 3D scans. You need a referal for most of them and they are $60-$100 depending on where you go. If there is a reason that your pregnancy looks like it might be high risk you will get referred to a obgyn at the hospital for free. If you have the money to pay for it and would like the obgyn if you need it you can get a midwife company that has them and it is called shared care and costs around 2300. The obgyn will then be at the birth of the baby. If you only want a obgyn to look after you with midwives being there to help you with the breastfeeding etc side of things it is $4000. If you have medical insurance and you have been on it for 3 years they will cover almost half of the obgyn costs. Hope that helps. Good luck.

Oh and you can choose if you want to go to a hospital or birthing centre. There is one in Helensville - http://www.birthcentre.co.nz/ But if you want to have some form of pain relief etc then they don't offer that and you have to go to hospital. Also I don't think they have obgyn's etc there if you need an emergency c-section or something.

I didn't see that you were in Helensville Chops1975! North Shore might be a closer trip and you can make a case to go there, but actually Helensville is in the area for Waitakere Hospital so they will try to make you go there if you want to go to a hospital. (For the record I've been at both and while the facilities are flasher at North Shore I preferred the staff at Waitak.)
Helensville Birthing Centre is LOVELY so if you are low risk etc do look into birthing there (or at least transferring after).
I thoroughly recommend my own midwife so far so if you want her details PM me. (In fact I have the details for all the midwives in Helensville if you need them.) Do book one as early as you can though - mine only takes 2-3 women per month!

NB there are a couple of places you can get free scans (as long as you're referred by your mw)

Thank you all so much for your help!!
Sounds like I need to sort this midwife thing out fast! Last time I did not click at all with my MW and because we moved, got a different one and she was great! We need somebody that can think outside of the box, lol
Anybody else any experiences in North Shore hospital or Waitakere?

One thing you need to be aware too is your immergaration status. Some visas don't give you free maternity care, you will also have to bring your visa with you at booking in so the mw can take a record of it. we weren't here very long before I fell pregnant but as we have permanent residency it wasn't a problem.

Hoi! Hoest?
Ik ben naderlands, only learning to speak it now though..
Trouwend my Dutch man (who is fluent) in Januari Although I'm in Southland not Auckland
I don't think NZ is all THAT different to Holland, although, my sister in law huis geboorte both her children... So for all I know it could be.
And: definately controle wat you are gegeven (entitled?) to met uw immigratie status
Well theres some brilliant mixing of Dutch and English just there hope you managed to get some sense out of it haha...
Hope you have a healthy and happy 9months

hi Chops
we are in Waimauku, and I am going to Waitakere Hospital, which is where I had DS1. The midwifes there are lovely, and it's easier to get to than North Shore, in terms of parking etc too.
You can get free scans via your midwife at Horizon Radiology on Lincoln Road, Henderson.

Totally OT and threadjacking, but bext1, I only realised in the last week that it's your twins that are in JJ's room at daycare (only worked it out when I was flipping through the recipe book!). Small world

I'm a permanent resident so that's all good...
Good Dutch-English mixture hunnybunny! I have to say I've allready noticed some big differences, especially in health information, it can be totally different on this site compared to a similar Dutch site...very confusing.
The biggest difference I've found till now is 2 things;
in Holland you get 12 or 14 weeks (can't exactly remember) of free time, paid by the government, at least 4 weeks before birth and the rest after the birth
But the best thing, that I am realy going to miss is that after the baby is born and you're home, you get a maternity nurse sent to your house that helps you out for 40hours..so effectively 6 hours a day for 6days and a bit...She/he will then help you with the first bath, basic housework, when visitors turn up, basic health care....etc. etc.
This was just FANTASTIC and we really had the best one last time. So good that I'm thinking of e-mailing her and asking her to come to NZ to do the same again, we'll pay for her ticket...! lol
ah, that's close, lincoln road. thanx Bext1

HI Chops,
Let me know if ur still in need of a midwife - I have a midwife acquaintance I can highly recommend who does at least 50% of her births at Helensville Birthing unit, aswell as Waitakere & she resides in Helensville too! I did one birth with her, as I'm studying to become a Doula & she was wonderful!
Beste Groete (hey I have Afrikaans as my 2nd language!)

Just my job as a Birth Doula!
