Topic: Joys of being a working mum Posted: 11 January 2008 at 10:15am |
OK first off don't get me wrong.. I actually hate leaving my little girl (in the capable hands of her daddy) everyday to go to work. I work for a great company who are so accomodating and let me finish early afternoon so I can spend time with my daughter and I'm really good at my job but who wants paid employment when you could be doing the best and most important job in the world - raising a little person.
So I need to remind myself what's great about being a working mum - feel free to add.
1) Money
2) Michaela's so excited to see me at the end of the day
3) Once a week wines & lunch with my girlfriends
4) I get to read a book or magazine in peace on my way to work and on my lunch breaks
5) Undisturbed opportunity to trawl the Oh Baby forum.
6) Grown up conversations
7) Michaela's daddy gets a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a superdad (seriously once in a lifetime, there's no way I'm coming back to work after the next one's born - not for a while anyway and definitely not full time)

8) I get to wear nice clothes everyday and as long as I change once I get home they don't end up with little hand prints and smears all over them

10) Sending off the pre-terrible-twosome to daycare and not having to deal with the tantrums all day! (I can handle a couple of hours at night!)
11) Lunchtime shopping without having to deal with a toddler pulling everything off the racks or complaining they want to get out of their pram!

you actually get a morning tea/lunch break, and get to drink a hot drink at a temp you like it at, not scalding your mouth to have one quickly "while you can" or getting distrated and putting it down to "attend" and it gets cold and

14) Occassionally get to fly to Auckland for one day trips at no cost to myself and never have to stay overnight because I have a little one to get home to.

Ha ha, so true fleury!
& if one of my colleagues throws a tanty (few and far between but does happen) I can tell them to pull their head in.

18) Remembering that you are a person and "not just a mum", and that you deserve to pursue interests outside of the sphere of motherhood. 19) Setting a good example for Michaela in that you want her to know that as a woman, she has choices and doesn't have to succumb to some outdated societal expectation that if she chooses to have children, she *has* to stay home with them and forget about her own needs, wants, and desires.
(Bit of a feminist here!)

20) My husband (superdad) rapidly learning what it's like to be a fulltime caregiver and now appreciating why some days I was still in my pjs when he got home from work and the house looked the same as when he'd left.
Ha ha - there's nothing like being thrown in the deep end!!

21) Being able to tell people what to do and see them actaully doing it! Makes a change from home where no one seems to listen sometimes
22) Being able to enjoy a morning coffee break at peace without having to constantly look over your shoulder

23) Having a life, and retaining my own identity as well as being a mum.
I LOVE being a working mum, I begged to come back from maternity leave early, and am considering only taking a month or so this time (altho I suspect the boss will put her foot down about that!), I love that I can work at a job that I enjoy, and that challenges and stimulates me, as well as spending time playing with my kids and doing 'mummy' things.
