Hugs Lu,
I don't like WINZ either, when I went on the DPB I was entitlted to the TIA and had all the forms etc. My case manager said I couldn't apply. I have since discovered I could have got it but cannot now as the rules changed after I applied. They won't give it to me as my case managr did not write down I had asked about it even though I have all the forms with dates still on them. So yeah you definately have my sympathy. I really hate how they make you feel like the biggest scum on the earth asking for help. Hope you get it sorted

What are you studying?

have u asked for another case manager? mine has been great, am on DPBCSI since my hubby walked out 2 months ago, (DPB Caring for sick or infirmed) i have three kids and youngest is chronically unwell. They have been really helpful, though things are tight and am so not used to being poor, the buget adviser has got me on the right track. I found that u have to ask "is there anything else that i am entitled to?" they cant stop u from applying and they have a set of rules to run by, this is not personal, if it is for you then ask for another worker. I did and it was so much better. Good luk xoxoxo and be strong, oh yeah wot is TIA i am guess additional support?

Don't even get me started on them scrapping the Training Incentive Allowance. ARGHHH.

And yeah Lu, sometimes they do make you feel like sh*t. But if they do, as drumstx said, you can totally change case manager.

A new case manager may also be able to figure out if you are entitled to any other assistance, like for your travel costs?

It drove me mental having to convince each and every single staff member of WINZ that I was worth their time of day. When you find someone good, STICK WITH THEM!! heh

Why don't you ask for the student loan living costs if they won't give you the training incentive? You have to pay it back as it gets added to loan, but not until you have finished studying, the same as student loan.
Don't know about other assistance but might be worth a try.

That would be fantastic if we could get that but we are allowed NOTHING extra for studying, not even a loan to help with the extra studying costs. It is obviously more expensive to study than to do nothing but for some reason we can't get any assistance which makes it very difficult.

That's really dumb that they won't let you have it if you are on a benefit, surely it's better to give out something has to be paid back? than not to help people study at all.
Glad you are doing well and passing everything despite them James

As a "rich" person, I agree, not allowing you to have the living costs portion of the loan is crazy! It really annoys the crap out of me, we are forever complaining about people on the doll and dpb yet there are ladies like you struggling to study and do something better for themselves and their families and they can't even get all the same assistance I'm entitled to. That is absolutely rubbish.

I hope you managed to at least get something sorted for your travel costs.

Are you sure you can't get the course related costs loan which is $1000 coz by the looks of this website you should be able to get that at least. And the compulsory fees should also be able to be paid by student loan.

Maybe you should go back and ask again for the loan, or just apply online and see what happens!

I would definitely check with studylink as there are some single mums on my uni course and I know they have had the course related costs approved and added onto their student loans

WINZ are helpful ONLY if you get a decent case manager, otherwise I swear theyre trained to make you feel like crap! I know theyre changing the rule a bit next year so if you are studying you can apply for $500 on top of the $1000 you can get for course related costs through studylink, but Im not sure what it's like until then sorry.

You can get course related costs but that gets eaten up pretty quick. For example My textbooks alone cost $1200 (although I got my for cheper second hand). Theres still petrol, childcare, placement costs that cost more than not studying. Even an extra $80 a week (which the TIA was) to pay back would make my life sooo much easier. Basically it takes a huge commitment to take on study as a single mother because you do have to find the money out of an already tight budget and quite honestly I could not do it without the help of my parents. Single mothers without that support may quite well find studying impossible financially.

The whole thing really irritates me - they make such a big deal about single moms on benefits but if they don't make it easier to study and get jobs then what other options are there?

Personally, i'm looking at corrospondance courses. It is complicated as i'm already qualified and working in my field - just my field is not at all compatiable with child-rearing so i need to change and no one seems to appreciate that. They just see that i'm studying when i already have a perfectly good diploma.

I'm hoping though, with some good juggling i can avoid WINZ and the DPB completely - but ONLY because i'll be living with my mom and she's a fantastic support. Without her, i'd be screwed.
