Topic: 2nd Birthday - Gift Ideas for my Boy Posted: 24 February 2009 at 11:58am |
Hoping a few of you can give me some ideas for gifts for Lucas, his Birthday is in a month or so and I'm trying to compile a list of things (mostly smallish) to get when I can finally start driving again (post-op). As you can tell I'm bored being housebound and all
Usually I give him one big gift and a few little ones (OK maybe more than a few) but after this B'day i'll have to tighten the ropes as we'll be out on our own (joys of boarding with parents, I can spoil him a little more), so I want to make this birthday count and get him something he'll LOVE!
He's REALLY into his hot wheels and matchbox cars (yes I know they're 3+ but he's always supervised). So I thought a wooden car garage but they're pretty hefty in price. Anyone know of any good deals? And vinyl road mats, I think they stock them at Plastic Box but wondering if anyone has seen them elsewhere, and if so how much?
I've got a playskool MP3 player, mr. potato head and matching egg game stashed away that i all picked up VERY cheap, have a tool bench with tools and kitchen with accesories but I think those 2 can wait till he's 3 -4 and can appreciate them more IYKWIM.
I'm open to ideas really, I'm either going to go down the track of a couple more little things, or a bigger gift and maybe a couple hot wheels cars. I'm also going to paint a couple of canvas' that he can hang up in his new room.
TIA

What about one of the carpet road play mats, much more durable than vinyl and they are so cool, Ethan has one and its one of his favourite things, you can get them in various sizes, from door mat size to huge enough to carpet a room. I know you can ge them at spotlight but also someone sells them for a really good price on trade me, just cant remember sellers name,

Duplo was an awesome second birthday present for us. He loves it and it keeps him entertained for ages.

Oo yeah duplo would be a great pressie. Plus you can get cars and trains etc.
What about if you find a wooden car garage on trademe (2nd hand) and you can do it up for him? Sand it back, paint it up etc. That would be an awesome pressie - not too expensive, would take time but would be special.
ETA: Like this one but in Auck.

I got my nephew one of those carpet road maps and its quite big - it was $50 from Toyworld (not on sale).
Those wooden garages are cool arent they! Again I got one for one of my nephews for Christmas and it was $40 from Toyworld as well.
Do you have a Toyworld where you are?
How much are you wanting to spend?

OMG kid is spoilt, we already have the carpet road mat and duplo (was wanting a vinyl one as they're easier to pull out and take around the house, and clean). The carpet one we have is the carpet area he plays on in our room, its HUGE!
Liz funny you gave that link, we have that exact same car garage somewhere in the depths of my parents garage, its my little brothers old one which I do plan to do up eventually, when I can drive to get paint ....ugh and when we can find it . Maybe i'll leave the garage idea and focus on something else as his main pressie. That little garage is pretty wicked.

Yeah I was going to say trike too. One with a handle if he can't yet reach the pedals.
Also, has he got a whiteboard/blackboard/painting board easel thing? They're pretty good. can get those 2nd hand if need be. We are getting one of those garages 2nd hand and painting it up too, they're quite expensive new.
Sounds like he's going to be a spoilt wee man! Our kids are going to be lucky if they ever get $50 spent on them for a birthday/xmas over the next few years.

I'm pretty sure i've seem little Lucas playing on a trike.
Since he already has lots of toys, could you perhaps look at getting him a zoo pass or special music classes - you know - his main pressie could be something other than a toy. You could get something fun that the two of you could do together. Make fun memories.

Zoo is going to be our day trip Leish, good thinking coz I don't really see the point in a party when he's still too young to really grasp the concept.
Little guy already has a flash trike that he plays on every day (wouldn't be without it) He is far too spoilt thus harder to buy for. Only have myself, parents and great grandparents to blame for that! I told everyone at Xmas no toys, so he ended up with a bookcase full of books and still toys galore from extended family/friends
I'm secretly looking forward to not having much to spare for birthdays/Xmas'.
I like that Easel Idea Emz, although he hasn't got my creative streak yet, could be an idea for Xmas. At this point I think I'll just stick with painting bro's garage up and getting a couple new cars to spice things up. We've got some other wooden cars/trailers I could paint/do up too. Cheaper and means more being a hand-me-down that both my bro & I played with iykwim

Josh got a beginner Thomas the Tank Engine Wooden train set, and I got everyone to get pieces and tracks etc to go with it. You can get the generic wooden tracks as opposed to the licenced ones for way cheaper and they fit perfectly with the licenced stuff.

Omigosh I know Leish, crazy how fast the time's gone. It's sad really. It's going to be a long long time before I ever have anymore too.
Clare was Josh a Thomas fan prior to the train set? Lucas doesn't seem to get attached to TV shows/characters as much as other littlies do, he sorta recognizes Disney Car characters but I think that's more a case of them being Cars iykwim

Nope, he didn't have a clue who Thomas was beforehand. Just loved the train set, being able to put it together himself and getting to know all the trains etc.
Now he has books as well, so LOVES it even more. The gift that keeps on giving

Noah has one of those beginner train sets too and he wasn't in to it beforehand. He really likes it though - more because its a train with a face I think as he doesnt watch any tv either Steph. Thomas is a great thing for them to get in to. It lasts for ages.
Noah's favourite thing in the world at the moment is playing with little men. He plays with an old lord of the rings chess set of Christopher's ALL the time. He knows all their names and Gandalf is his favourite. He sets them up to battle each other and its sooooo cute. We have got him a castle to "play mans" on and some other "mans" to play with. These cute little Hulk characters, some of the DC Super Friends sets (Superman and Batman) and a couple of "naughty mans". I can't wait till he opens his pressies. Its going to be so fun!

Aww Noah sounds like such a little boy, gosh they do grow up fast!
If I get Lucas into Thomas it would be pretty ideal as my brother kept all his collectable diecast trains from the series, LOTS of old toys like that stashed away in the garage for when my parents had grandkiddies. They just never thought it would be as soon as this.
So this beginner set, is it reasonably priced ...or is there a set that's a little step up from it that won't break the bank (and is more affordable)? Wonder if there will be any sales between now and 23rd Mar @ Farmers or the likes. I hate paying full price (never ever have I paid full price for his stuff, i refuse to)
I usually get his presents in those mega toy sales after his Bday (ya know the ones where Kmart open at some crazy hour in the morning). But last year I only bought stuff for when he's 3-4+

When I was in KMart on Monday they had some wooden Thomas stuff on sale. Can't remember what or how much. There is also this really simple to use Thomas remote control train that Noah got for Christmas that he is really getting in to now. He loves it. I think I saw it somewhere recently (maybe Toy World or Kmart again) for $50 on sale. It's really cool and makes sounds and you can put water in it so it makes steam. It only has two controls so ideal for a little person.
