Topic: 4/5 engaged? Posted: 05 November 2008 at 9:12pm |
I went to my midwife yesterday and apparantly bubs is 4/5 engaged, i thought (until i was talking to a friend of mine today) that it went in a countdown from 5 downwards and i thought that bubs was starting to move down and just past the first stage but she told me it goes from 1-5 now if i'm 4/5 engaged does that mean bubs is nearly fully engaged? and isnt 33 weeks too early for that to happen? and (sorry for all the questions lol) how long can you stay that engaged before bubs is born? I want to meet my baby but not this soon...... eeeeek help put my mind at rest please

It would depend on how your m/w reads it. Some are backwards
AS to how long they are there for ?.. each to their own
ETA I just read your post properly.. Ignore me

lol glow thanks
i think i'm just being paranoid about it all now after my convo with my friend, the midwife didn't seem too concerned that bubs is 4/5 so maybe she does it backwards lol i dont know... i suppose i should of asked but thought nothing of it really going on her seeming fine about it

At my last midwife appointment (which was last Wednesday), I was told I was 1/5 engaged, and was told by my midwife they count from 1 to 5...
I was also told that at this stage in pregnancy, the baby can still move around, so may move out of that position of engagement....
But if you are concerned about, you should contact your midwife just to get some clarification

Josh was pretty well engaged early on then the day before he arrived he flip flopped and came out feet first so personally i dont think you need to take a lot of notice of it as its more for midwifes notes than anything.
I sooo cant believe you are so far along it seems like only a week or two ago you had your BFP how exciting!!!

Morning
Noodle I think 4/5 engaged means that 1/5th of your bubs head is engaged, it's strange how they work these things out, You'd at least think the'y use Lamens(sp) terms so we know what they are talking about...
Heres a graph also but this is off an american site so may differ slightly to us....

I hope this works...

If Im reading that pic right you'd be -4/5 & bubs would gradually come down till you get to 0/5 which would be fully engaged and the + numbers will be when your in labour & bubs is on the way out...

Interesting - I know I got to 3/5 engaged (previously 1/5 then 2/5), and my MW said that's pretty much as far as you get until actually in labour. Maybe she does do it backwards? (more like the graphic above)?
ETA: i was 3/5 engaged for weeks, and ended up going 9 days over.

Mmm I was 1/5 the day before I had Joel, but insaying that I was fully dialated and they couldn't see his head at all so we were way up there, (he was delivered by forceps as that was the only way he was coming down)

I was the same noodle at 33 weeks aswell me thinks! My midwife said "fully engaged" means your in labour lol. They can bob up and down aswell.
Caden was 4/5 and then went breech! Then we back 4/5 then went posterior! lol

Bethany started engaging around 33wks - starting at 1/5, then was 2/5 around 35wks and by 37wks was 3/5... though she was consistent the whole way along, I ended up three days overdue. So it doesn't really mean anything in terms of how soon you'll give birth. But at least you know your bubs is facing the right direction (even if it's just for now!) - that made me breathe a sigh of relief cuz I mum had me after 24hrs of labour via emergency c-section as a breech baby... I was relieved that I wouldn't be going through that for my first!

My mw never gave me a number like that, because she could never work out which way up bubs was. She did say when she finally sent me for a scan, that if bubs did happen to be head down, then she was so far down she couldn't feel her head. She was head down, and felt like she'd been that far down for weeks. So they can be well engaged and still take a while to actually come... My labour went really quickly, maybe because she was well engaged, so maybe yours will too!
