The last few nights my 5 month old has been crying in his sleep about every hour or two through the night, he sounds like he is quite distressed and upset, he is not fully awake when he does it, but sometimes he will wake himself up fully and it takes a while for him to get back to sleep, it's almost like he is having a bad dream, he has done this a lot for his day sleeps but never at night, has anyone else experienced this with their baby before? He is teething and I'm wondering if that could cause it?

Could be teeth, people often comment on their babies having nightmares, not sure what they've got to be scared about though.

It sounds a little like night terrors? My son went through a stage of that round the same age, would be crying and screaming but not really awake and we had to wake him up and resettle sometimes. There's not a huge amount you can do about it I don't think but apparently them being overtired or stressed/changes happening can cause it. Certainly happens when DS hasn't slept properly
