Hi, I am new to this forum and have an adorable 6 month old. He has been exclusively breast feed and for the past few months I have been trying to bottle feed with no success - total refusal. Seems there are a few on here with the same problem. I have tried all teats, bottles, sipper cup, normal cup, syringe, spoon etc and unless it is breast DS refusses. He eats solids well so I am able to make them with formula to get some fluid into him but no where near enough. I am needing to wean. Has anyone gone cold turkey with the breast. I know to watch for sunken fontenel, sleepyness, lethargy and dry nappies. Do you recommend this. I have till 25th June to wean DS and am so uptight as I am not getting anywhere. Appreciate your help/ideas.

The best piece of advice I have come across is to get someone else to feed him. Even to the point that you actually leave the house so he can't see or smell or hear you.

Try this for a feed or 2 during the day and persevere.

I assume the reason you need to wean is because you need to be away from him for some reason (work??). I have heard of some babies that won't drink at all during the day while mum is away but make up for it before and afterwards. Maybe this becomes your new routine.

All the best.

Hi Helen, Im heading overseas for 10 days without DS hence need to wean. I've tried leaving DS with my Mum for a whole day/night and he still wont feed. I also get someone else to try feeding everyday for the last 6 weeks and no luck...

Will he take a bottle while asleep? I wouldn't normally suggest this but his suck reflex might be strong enough that he will drink while asleep. Then at least he will get some liquid in him.

Also have you tried him holding the bottle with him facing away from who ever is feeding and them just guiding it. Giving him some to play with so they become familiar may help too.

Have you seen the lactation consultant at your local Plunket Family Centre? If you haven't - I would definitely go there.

I have heard that if a baby hasn't taken the bottle by a certain age, chances are that they won't. Babies can start taking milk/water from a sippy cup from age 6mths so this could be another alternative.

I have just started my baby on a sippy cup with water even though I'm a SAHM and happy breastfeeding and he really likes it.

Hi thanks for the help - I have tried all the suggestions you have suggested and still no luck. I have been going daily to the plunket centre and they try to feed a bottle to DS. But he screams. It is now at the point that I get the bottle out of the cupboard and he practically starts closing his mouth and crying - is it possible he is scared of the bottle (sipper cup etc), because at plunket they hold the cup/bottle in his mouth for 15 mins even if he gaggs...he never use to be like this. Today I have just gone back on the boob for every feed as I needed the break and DS much happier. I am seeing a Paediatrician on Thursday so hope they offer help.
