Topic: 8 month old still wakes 4+ times a night Posted: 24 May 2010 at 8:18am |
any suggestions on what to do with a 8 month old thats till wakes constantly at night. sleeps well for about two hours then wants some attention again... typical pattern throu the night
baby is still wrapped as wont sleep or go to sleep without his arms being wrapped, and has a dummy. BF so two of the times during the night he was wanting a feed. doesnt take too kindly to a bottle.
have tried letting him cry it out but with a 3 year old i am trying to choose my battles so that i dont disturb him
have seen the wraps on TM that are for babies that transition from wrap to not... anyone tried these?

Jake still wakes 2 plus times a night... no advice as we have resorted to controlled crying as he just wants us to sleep with him.. we are down from 6 plus night wakings though so its working! Oh and he woke 3 times last night and only needed comforting once!

* covers eyes * I will NOT read this, I don't want to hear about babies so old still waking every couple of hours!
JD's mum, I feel your pain! Have you read the no-cry sleep solution book from Elizabeth Pantley? It has some really good ideas and they seem to work here, except when her reflux is playing up.
How much attention does he need? Just the dummy popping back in, or more than that?
Hugs to you! I know how hard the sleep deprivation thing is!

Thanks ladies, yeah he sometimes can be just the rewrap and then a dummy for which hubby and i take turns in doing but other times i just know the grizzle that he does means that he wants food. he is a big (ish) baby already 10kg so kinda thinking he is asking for it cause he needs the milk but arghhh maybe i am creating a habit!?
we did control crying with DS1 and know that it does work... thinking might have to bite the bullet and just do it. close DS1 door at night....

IMO 8 mths old is still young enough to feed through the night...
My second child didnt sleep consistently through the night till he was 14 mths old, and stopped being fed in the night at 12 mths old. in the end a babyok is what stopped his night waking. its kind of like a sleeping bag but attached to the sheet so they can roll but not stand up. i would also check he is warm enough.

haha bizzy i was just thinking the total opposite - that 8mo is capable of going the night without feeding - so there you go 2 completely different opinions! Not helpful at all!
hate to say it hun but i'd consider weaning the dummy and wrapping using whichever method you feel most comfy with ie cc or the no cry solution. since you're having to get up all night anyway you might as well get rid of some of those sleep props and be done with it. Otherwise you'll get this phase sussed and have to do it all over again.
Have you read that No Cry Sleep book? i believe she has good suggestions for getting kids off sleep props and which order to do it in etc.

Try using a Pekemoe instead of wrapping... he will probably be a whole lot more comfy if he can move around a bit

Personally I'd agree with getting rid of dummy and night feeding and some kind of CC method. We did this at nearly 9 months (although didn't have a dummy). I was so badly sleep dreprived and suffering from PND.
Can you get your 3 year old to go somewhere for a weekend as this may be all you'll need?
I thought getting rid of wrapping would be a problem but honestly, it wasn't. She likes to sleep on her tummy and was probably a bit frustrated not being able to move.
I weaned at night by dropping a few minutes each night over a week. I do a dream feed at 10 (as DD is very little) and that's it till morning. Fingers crossed but since we did this I haven't got up once. DD is much happier to not having to need me to put her to sleep all night long. I slept with a cuddly for few night before hand and gave it to her, which she cuddles at night.

Have you had a read of the sleep stores suggestions http://www.thesleepstore.co.nz/
I've taken bits and pieces of their advice. DS was sleeping through (till 5am at least) but for some unknown reason he's back to waking 2 - 4 times. (like he's forgotten how to put his dummy back in).
DS was a fully wrapped baby till 7mths, I swear I thought he'd never sleep without it. But now he does. We tried a sleeping bag - didn't like it. We tried just under blankets - didn't stay put. Now we just dress him up warm.
My advice - change something. More/less bedding. Room lighter/darker. Unwrapped? Room warmer/cooler.
You could also try to teach him to put his own dummy in. (Although DS has recently regressed). We 'taught' him by putting him in his cot with his dummies, but not putting them in his mouth (requires a night light)

I second the sleepstore info- its great. I have been working on improving Aidens sleep, and he now feeds once or twice a night with no other wakings between- he was waking al least every 2 hrs, sometimes every hr between feeds and mostly he would just need me to give him his dummy. I weaned him out of being wrapped, into a sleeping bag so he could suck his hands or cuddle his taggie blanket instead of dummy, then weaned the dummy buy beginning with just using in in his cot then slowly reducing the use- al follwing what the sleepstore info said- has been a sucess for us and didnt take long at all!
I knwo what its like with an older child in the next room.
We were no trying to stop the night feeds tho as he is only 4 months, but had to stop all the inbetween feed wakings.
