Sorry, might seem like an obvious question (with an obvious answer), but none of the info I have has the answer...
I know you're not supposed to eat deli salads (so my books say and our M/W), OK that's cool. But what if I made potato salad at home, with one of those Eta potato salad mix jars for the 'sauce'? I would make it and keep in our fridge, and use within a day of making.
I'm just not sure, I guess the listeria risk would be the same if it's kept in my fridge as it is in a deli? Which would make home potato salad a no go?
Man, I really feel like potato salad right now. Seems I feel like all the things I'm supposed to avoid, lol. I could REALLY go for a Subway Club sandwich right now... |

i'd make it and eat it the same day...
just check that the store brought mayo doesn't have raw eggs in it (i don't think it does, as it has a long shelf life...)
 just my thoughts...

Personally I think it is fine. The problem with the deli salads is that they are not well chilled.
As long as the dressing doesn't have raw egg in it, it is safe to eat.

Like you say, I'd eat it up nice and quick to be doubly safe.

YUM potato salad! I bought some potatoes from the supermarket and am roasting them for dinner. Just really felt like some!

I thought that you could eat mayo from the supermarket that has egg in it because it is pasturised whereas homemade mayo the egg isn't pasturised.... am sure I read it somewhere, will look it up again and change this if it is wrong.

I make it and eat it the same day. And yep, store bought mayo is fine as it is heat treated/pasteurised even if it does contain egg. The exception is those ones you can get in pouches like the Kato sauces coz they are fresh.

   NZFSA Website
Eggs - Raw eggs: in egg flips, eggnog, smoothies, home-made mayonnaise etc - Don’t eat

Sauces and dressings - salad dressings (oil and vinegar), bought mayonnaise, tomato sauce etc - Store in fridge once opened

All mayo products in the supermarket apart from fat free ones have eggs in them - but they are pasturised (apart from masterfoods tartare sauce - only egg free one we have found).... my husband is allergic to egg and we are constantly looking for an egg free yummy mayo and always check them in the shop.

 Hope this helps!

Another important thing you need to avoid during pregancy is aspartame it can disrupt the foetus in the womb and cause birth defects. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener for those who don't know and is commonly found in 'sugar free' drinks, chewing gum etc. Anything that says sugar free you should check the ingredients.
:)

Oooh, I've heard that too. I think it's number is 951 so if you look at the ingredients it might just say 'sweetner(951)' I could be wrong though |

Thats right, also msg which is 'flavour enhancer 621' 627 isn't msg and is on a lot of the food that advertise 'No MSG' on their packaging, but apparently it isn't very good to have especially for children and when preganant.
My son just got back from his school holiday camp and said they were serving coke zero to the kids!! I got furious at the camp and I'm going to write a letter of complaint! Coke zero and diet drinks have aspartame in them which is so damaging to the growing brains of children, even damaging to adults.
I think some campaigners are trying to get the government to put warnings put on all food and drinks containing aspartame that it is damaging to health just like they do on cigarette packs!

Thanks for all the replies. I've bought a jar of the potato salad mix and it's in the pantry, though of course now that I have it...I don't feel like it anymore, lol. Typical.
