 Topic: All Teachers - Need some help!

Hey there,
Am just doing some planning for #2 but have got myself slightly confused. I am having this full year off so starting back next school year (2009).
I am only planning on going back for 2 terms then taking maternity leave again. Will this mean its 6 months so that I qualify for PPL from the government or not. When does the school year officially start as I know its before the kids start back.

I don't know if it depends on your school, but I checked my payslip and in 2007 I got paid from 27 Jan

It is usually around the end of January but depends on the school - as long as they do the set number of teaching days there is a bit of flexibility.
The paid parental leave depends on whether you have a job to go back to. If you are fixed term ie your contract finishes at the end of Term 2, then you can't get it. If it is a permanent position then you can.

I am permanent and have been with my school for 5 years now but you need to do 6 months to qualify for it again according to PPTA.
So if you take it from the end of Jan - I need to work until the end of July to qualify for PPL again.
For some reason, I decided that the school year started early than that but that kids came back around the time. Maybe because if you get paid on the 27th technically you actually started work 2 weeks prior to that as you have to work to get paid - Does that make sense?
Right, just checked school terms. Term 2 rans until July3rd. School hols finish on July 20th so if I take my Mat leave from the 19th - I should qualify, shouldn't I?

I don't think it "officially" starts til the 27th, cos on my payslip it has the dates you're paid for (ie the dates you worked), and the first one is the 27th. BUT I know that next year school starts a bit earlier doesn't it? Like the 2nd or 3rd, when the last couple of years it's been the 7th. So you might have that pay on the 22nd or something like that. Which means you'd have to work til the 22nd, 2 days into Term 3!
Could you talk to the school about it and officially finish up Term 3, Week 1 --- but have your last week in the classroom the last week of Term 2, and be available for relieving for release or something? (like BT release, CRT, lead teachers release etc). Do you think they would be flexible like that? Just makes it easier for the new teaching taking over your position, but means you'd still get PPL.

Yeah, I was hoping to avoid all the messiness and just finish up at the end of the 2nd term. I am a secondary teacher so not a huge amount of release type stuff. My school is pretty good though and I imagine with a wee bit of creative accounting I will just finish at the end of term 2 and still get my PPL.
I was just getting myself all confused and wanted to sort it out in my head.  with some help from others!

My thoughts are that they average the time that you have worked over the past 6 months and if you have worked more than 10 hours a week (which is 2 days) you qualify.

With the 6mos back at work, I think you qualify for the 14 weeks PPL but not the full 12 mos. (Don't know if you've sorted that bit or not yet)

Ok, have rang both the payroll guy at school and the PPTA guy for the caterbury area and it works like this:
If I go back from Jan to July, then I do qualify for the 14 weeks from the government but will have to work about 3 - 5 days (depending on when the school decides to start) of the first week of term 3 but will just do relief for that and it will be fine.
I am full time so my hours are sweet for the government leave and with teaching you qualify for a years mat leave that can be extended to 2 years if you want it to so am all sorted!
