and I have no idea what to expect, what do they normally talk about on the first week? Jax has already told me they show the dreaded birth vids at the second class

Any info would be appreciated so that I can prepare myself and my hubby

In our first class held at Waitakere Hospital we got slit up into groups, introduced ourselves, discussed what we wanted to learn about, what our fears were (giving birth, complications, challenges) and what we are looking forward too (seeing baby for the first time, no more mood swings)just some examples. Then we had to report back to the whole class, most groups had the same thoughts and then we watched the good old birthing video and i must say, for first time mother's it is quite disturbing....(scary)

Second class was a tour of the hospital birthing units and quiz on how much we actually know about pregnancy.

Third class was about giving birth through all the stages with no complications and streches to help get baby into the right position and get you ready for birth.

That's all we've covered so far, but you get alot of handouts to read. So i've just put everything into a clear folder so i can refer back to it if i have too.

It's fun and you meet couples due around the same time as you and you'll most likely be in hospital around the same time, so it's all good.

Deez, yours sound heaps better than the one Im going to. On the first night we did nutrition - which i thought was a bit late considering we were all around 30 weeks, and what position the baby may be in. The next two weeks was birth and pain relef (with the video). For the next couple of weeks its post natal. We dont even do a hospital tour.

Morning ladies,
Class went really well. It was great to FINALLY meet other preggy girls and their partners.
We learnt heaps, we thought we were pretty clued up on everything but turns out we missed the "details" like I knew what I couldn't eat/do but couldn't remember the exact medical reasons why ahh well I still think I got the important bits drilled into my brain!

The lady who runs the class is lovely, great sense of humour! Put everyone at ease straight away

Here is the layout of our 6 week class with Birth Matters in West Auckland:
Week #1
Get to know eachother
Your expectations for the course
Your LMC and care plan
Pregnancy Screening
Nutrition and healthy lifestyles
Labour signs
Warning signs
Labour overview

Week #2
Relaxation
Massage (I can't wait for this bit! )
Labour - 1st stage & it's variations
Mechanics of birth
Optimal foetal positioning
Pregnancy discomforts

Week #3
Birth video
Labour positions
Birth - 2nd stage & it's variations
3rd stage & it's variations
Stretching
Pelvic floor

Week #4
Birth places
Caesarean birth
Why experience labour (INDEED! )
Support measures
Support team
Drugs in labour
Birth wish list (She doesn't like the word "Plan")

Week #5
Unexpected outcomes
Vitamin K deficiency bleeding
Vaccinations
Breastfeeding

Week #6
The fourth trimester - when baby has arrived
New parents "show & tell"

Some of the items we covered last night about “what to ask your Midwife BEFORE you sign up was a bit of time wasted I think – What can you do about it at 30 weeks?!!? Not many midwives would take you on at this late stage and besides if you haven’t already sorted out if you are happy with your midwife and if he/she is any good by now then HELLOOOOOO!!!!
