Hi All, Im a young muma of 1 living in chch. My partner and I are expecting again with me currently being round 16weeks. After my blood test the hospital rung me and told me they had picked up these antibodies called anti K. They said most likely developed after my blood transfusion after a complicated birth last year. My midwife has never had anyone with this before. Ill be needing blood tests about every 2weeks from here on out. Im a bit hesitant about even telling anyone about the pregnancy now as I have not much info to go on myself. Have any of you ladies had this?
Hi - just wondering if you ever had any replies to this - i have exactly the same issue - got them from a blood transfusion and am due with baby number two in 3 weeks! would be keen to hear how you got on as am in chch too!
Hi Janelle, My Mr is now 6months old and healthy :) Have you been having the fortnightly blood tests? With me they took a blood sample when I went into labour and put in an IV line just incase. I found that they monitored me a lot closer. I wasnt aloud to stay in the shower etc and had to have a strap around me much more than I did with my first. But asides from that everything went well and he is nice and healthy. Scary though isint it?!
Hi Jo - no ive been having monthly ones - but titers are 128 (have been 256 once) and not shifting - have also had monthly scans to look at MCA flow through the brain and so far all okay - they are letting me go to term but not overdue and will keep us in for 72 hours post to make sure baby doesnt get jaundiced. i have to birth at womens anyway after big post birth bleed last time! my midwife also had no idea and ive taught her the most about it all! im planning to ask womens health to develop a pamphlet about it as most of my info ive got from usa and uk from the baby center websites! did they tell you abouts risk if you choose to have another one? apparently as long as your have same partner - risk does not change. We are the lucky ones as we got it from transfusions - those that get it from partner being positive (10% of the worlds population are!) end up being induced early, need blood transfusions before baby is even born and all sorts of other dramas! it is scary - but im counting myself lucky so far - they seem to be very cautious at womens which is good!!
It sounds like we had a very similar experience last time! I was in hospitsl for a week recovering as I had a retained placenta snd ended up going under genral anthestic to remove it. I had a great midwife (who now works at chch womens) Amy Saunders who researched it. But even so I found out most my info from overseas. And yes I heard that there will always be a risk for me with future babies. I stayed in womens for 3days this time. They were sure he would get jaundice but he was fine. There is a real lack of info though and I felt quite upset and fed up a lot of the time! Im glad they gave you scans they only offered me one snd when I had been in labour for about 5hours the doctors started getting anci that I hadn't had enough scans etc and started to freak me out.
wow - so they must have learnt from you then!! (not how it should be tho!)i think ive had scans every month because my blood levels were quite high to start with - do you know what your titers were? I had retained placenta after the first one! (not surprising considering the bleed!) - but it wasnt picked up and i had another bleed at home when baby was a month old and like you ended up needing it removed by general anaesthetic! - it was a nightmare! ahhh its so nice to talk to someone else thats been thru it! theres a very knowledgeable lady on the baby centre forum who has also answered my questions. It is frustrating that they dont explain it properly and tell u the plan!! (im a nurse tho so im persistant and pesky = worst patient ever!!) Ill keep my eye out for amy! i have vicki de grut as my midwife who is lovely and well prepared but has also had to do research!!!
Well shes out!! - Our wee girl was born on Saturday - weighing a rather large 9pds 2Oz - but shes fine! a wee bit of jaudice so i spent four days in hospital while they monitored her bili levels - they wernt at the risk line for needing phototherapy but did rise (but so did the allowable limits) so they just did heel pricks every 12 hours and kept a wee eye. The good news is her coombs test was negative so she doesnt have the antibodies.
The docs had said to me they didnt want me to go overdue so when my due date passed my midwife sent the referral for an induction but the hospital docs never rang us with a plan - and baby was well so i was pleased when things happened on their own - and i went five days overdue. :)
