Topic: Ants!!! Posted: 03 February 2010 at 3:11pm |
I hate ants and feel like they are invading us!
We have bait stations up and a robocan in the lounge. But can't get rid of them.
Even found few crawling in DS1 bed! Which is bizarre as there is no food or anything in there.
Anyone know how to get rid of them forever?
these are big ants too!

Sometimes the only way to get rid of them is to get an exterminator. In our old house there was a nest in the wall and another in the ceiling. None of the other stuff worked but the exterminator fixed it.

We get ants all over the place on the ground floor, we are CONSTANTLY wiping them away, spraying etc etc. I find the traps work for a while but then stop working and we have to change tack. They LOVE BM and formula, oh and baby sick!
We used to use this gel stuff in our flat in Welly. Just put a line of it along the bench and they'd be attracted to it and get stuck, I bought it from the supermarket. No idea of the name or anything though!

I had a flannel that had used to clean DS1 face, not from food just usual boy grime, left it on his tall boy came back, remembered after a few hours and it was covered in ants!!
they are huge and fast like they are on steriods!
Will try the gel line and DH going under house to spray. So hopefully that will work!
just freaks me out they were in DS1's bed!

I had a problem with them a while back... i rang Raid and had a go at them coz their ant bait 'didn't work'. The lady on the phone told me there are two types of ants... sugar ants, and protein ants. The sugar ones are attracted to the bait and therefore die, but the protein ones won't go near it... I forgot what she said gets rid of them... give them a call if you can!

To be honest, it sounds like you have a big problem with ants and this won't help, but we always wipe down surfaces with Ajax Baking Soda Spray - but just baking soda and water should work too. This seems to keep them away for a couple of months for us, but saying that we never get them too bad in the first place.
Worth a try maybe?
Good Luck!

If you google homemade ant bait there are recipes. I made one with borax & it worked really well was really cheap. You can get borax off Trademe quite cheaply as well.

One of the joys of living in Auckland. I hate ants too. My place was over run with the suckers during the winter - to the point of not being able to leave opened food packets in the pantry (like a bag with mini packets of raisins in it). It drove me demented. I've got bait stations at entry points now, and a robocan as well. We've not had any for a while now, but I don't for one second think I've gotten rid of them permanently. I think its just seasonal, and in a few months time my house will be ant city again.
I reckon, if its really really bad then an exterminator is your best option.

I think natural remedies include cloves and pepper but not sure how effective they are. We have nests in our walls and use "gourmet ant bait" I bought a tube of the flybuster guy. It is great. We just put it down and they are attracted to it and then they all go away for a bit. He said that if they are acrobat ants then they are hard to get rid of for good and to just keep baiting and see what happens. I would say bunnings or mitre 10 should have it. To test if acrobat ants. Tap the ground and if they run around in circles like they are on drugs that is them. Other types of ants just run away these do a crazy dance type thing. Hope this helps.
