Having a baby is one thing, having it in a country I am not familiar is another. Anyone else in the same situation? xx

HI,
I'm from Sweden and having my first over here, it is definately somethign no one else can understand. I have never wanted to be closer to my family this much.
Things you woudl normally ask your mum but shes not really within asking distance or you can't call cause it would be 2am in the morning for them LOL

Hi there,
I'm from the UK. I have been here almost a year now. Iam however expecting my second child in just over a weeks time - Eeek!
The system is completly differet here than in the UK. Took me a while to understand what I needed to do etc. And I will admit I prefer the system here. At least you get to know your midwife throughout your pregnancy here and not just whomever is on the shift at the hospital as in the UK!
When are you due? and where are you living?

I'm from the UK too (London) I found the NZ system a bit daunting at first, but it's a breeze compared to what a lot of mates from back home went through (not knowing which MW you would see next or at the birth!)

I am also from the Uk and had Fay here, it was a breeze compared to my friends' experiences, i saw one midwife the whole way through, except labour but that'a a long story. She did my pre and post natal stuff and sorted me out immediately after brith, just missed the crucial moment as someone was very impatient to be here

I'm a Kiwi but I had my first two in the UK, so I know what it is like to have kids miles from family. I am enjoying the system here soooo much more than the UK. If I can help at all PM me.

I'm not from the UK -- I'm originally from the US, and I had my daughter after I'd been in New Zealand for about four years. So I can understand where you are coming from. The system is entirely different to what you are used to, you don't have the family support in place that you would have at home, and don't get me started on the cravings for food that doesn't exist in New Zealand.

I'm from Ireland, been here 2.5 years. I found being pregnant in a different country to be scary at first but the support you get here is very good for both antenatal and postnatal.

I'm a kiwi but DH is from Leeds. OUr midwife is from Wakefield (just down the road) which has been really helpful for him. Often she will explain to him little differences between the 2 countries and I think it's also nice for MIL to know there is a bit of a connection to 'home' with her being so far away and not able to be involved. From what I have heard I am quite glad to be doing it in NZ but the baby clothes which keep arriving in the post are gorgeous and nothing like whats avail here

Your right on the baby clothes etc Maysie! There is such a bigger choice in the UK. They are cheaper and the quality is much better but I suppose that it because there is 64 million people living there and 4+ million here!

Ordering baby clothes online from mothercare seems to be the way to go, you can get loads more for your money.

Love the mothercare clothes!!,...we brought a huge pile back with us after being in London for 2 years. The UK sizes seem to be huge tho! Isla is just fitting 9-12 month mothercare stuff now, its still long in sleeves and baggy on her and she 18 months and in size 1 and some size 2 stuff here. NEXT stuff is tooo cute and big sized like that too.

Hiya, I'm a kiwi girl having my first bubba in the UK. We live in Berkshire, Maidenhead at the mo but moving to Reading in a few months. It sure is daunting having a baby in an unfamiliar system but it seems to be going okay for me at present. Everyone keeps asking if I like my midwife and I just say well at the end of the day it doesnt really matter, I've seen her 4 times, the Dr twice and will have whoever is on duty at the hospital when baby decides to arrive. Would be nice to have some continuity for sure but free scripts and dental is a nice perk of the UK system!!!!
Oh and Mothercare & Next have great baby clothes though pricey in the scheme of things, I watch out for the sales like a hawk and buy up large then hee hee!!!! Marks and Spencer also do lovely 9 piece sets - too cute!!!

Yeah I have some tescos stuff on loan that was already used on 2 babies and it's still in perfect condition.
My sister arrives in 6 weeks, off I totter to the Next website to see if there's anything I need

I have a look on ebay and buy new with tags stuff for my DD, usually next size up for her (mainly next clothes) have it sent to my mum's and then she sends them to me surface mail which is really cheap. Going to do the same with this baby especially if it is a boy as I have kept all of DD's clothes which are in Fab condition.

I'm from the UK and had my first there 7 years ago. Now having my second. I got all my baby stuff from Mothercare first time round. Things are very different here. Very scary that the nearest major hospital is 3 hours away so hoping no emergencies.
