Topic: Argh! The rash continues... Posted: 12 September 2006 at 4:49pm |
Help!! This bum rash of Hannahs is driving me loopy - luckily she isnt bothered by it at all
So, since she was about 4 months she has been getting this rash on her nappy area - not like a normal nappy rash. It is kinda like a whole lot of little red dots, not open, raw and nasty looking at all. So we have been to the docs lots and they have no idea. Initially thought thrush, but it wasnt. Then we figured it was due to me eating dairy and if I completely stopped it would go away after about 3 weeks (however it only completely went away twice, and came back from me eating something with milk solids in it). Also thought it was due to wearing cloth nappies, but many trials of disposables for a week or so never changed it. She also gets excema so she has a bath every second day with an organic baby bath wash, no disposable wipes just flannel and water, and I use Ecostore washing powder, so basically no chemicals on the baby. Shes been on soy formula almost 2 weeks and wearing disposables (which I really dont like using) and it has improved ever so slightly, but now shes got little blisters in the area, but no where else I change her every 3 hours or so and give her no nappy time for about an hour every evening.
I dont know what else to do - any ideas? At least I've got my rant over with, but its really frustrating cos the rash was one of the reasons I unwillingly stopped breastfeeding. Roll on toilet training!!

That's no good Aimee
Caitlin had a nasty nappy rash (even with the fuzzis! We finally found out it was caused by the baby wipes). GP gave us Kenacomb Ointment which has cleared it up altogether.
Good luck mate

One of my cloth-nappy using friends swears by lucas pawpaw ointment for her baby's bum. Its thick and gooey, (but apparently very natural) so it stops anything irritating the rash while it heals. I hope it clears up soon, must be so frustrating for you!

Alyssa used to get a rash that sounds very similar little dots. I wouldnt of classed hers as nappy rash though. I think she does have very sensitive skin and reacted to her wees. So if i used zinc at every nappy change she wouldnt get it. Hope you guys find something that works for you soon.

A friend of a friend has used beaten egg whites on her son's nappy rash and it cleared it up in one day. You have to make sure you do a test patch first though. I know babies aren't allowed to eat egg whites until they're one year old so not sure about putting it on her skin so this may be of no use at all!

I've heard good things about spraying white vinegr on the nappy. apparently it neutralises the acid in the urine...or something like that.

I've also heard only good things about that pawpaw lotion. Good for all sorts of rashes including those on the face.
Sudocrem cleared Ashlee's up good and proper good luck with that. I hate the whole trial and error of 'testing' out what works and what doesn't!

This year a rash popped up on my forearms and when I went to the Dr where he gave me a urea based cream (YEP fertiliser!). It promotes the skin to grow and it clears up the blocked pores. It is GODDAM expensive, but it made my itchyness clear up after only using it for like 4 days. The cream is called nutraplus! It is available over the counter. I used it very, very sparingly on my skin and when Olivia had dry scaly skin on her forehead I rubbed a little on it to see what would happen and what do you know . I can send you some if you like?? I have a container some where and I have no cooties (not anymore). Even if you don't want any of my 2nd had rubbish, go and ask a pharmacist if you can try it out.
It turns out that when the skin on my forearms gets dried out from water or from creams of any kind I get a rash! Now I'm allergic to perfume!
This was a good non steriod way to go.

Thanks I guess it has only been just two weeks and it might take a while to get all the dairy out of her system. If its still like that in anohter two weeks, then we'll be back to the doctors...

I had a similar thing happen. It was when Matthew hit 4 months too. The doctor said it was nappy rash & gave me some hydrocortisone cream to clear it up & some zinc & castor oil
(horrible greasy stuff!) for a barrier cream. It cleared up for a bit but kept coming back every time I put him back in cloth nappies (although I was using pre-folds which didn't help draw the moisture away). I came to the conclusion that it was probably a type of eczma because he gets that on other areas & we've just been using the Weleda Calendula baby cream every nappy change. It seems to have gone completely now. Still haven't got back into cloth nappies yet though & he did have the rash on & off for probably nearly 2 months!

Hmmm, thats one cream I havent got! There is a very small percentage of babies who get eczema/rashes etc from cloth nappies, and it will probably be just my luck that my baby is one of them cos I sell them! I use Fuzzis and the microfleece draws the moisture away within a few minutes which is the part I dont understand, cos its not that much longer than disposables. And not like cotton nappies that stay damp. Let me know if you have any luck Nic as we have had this rash almost continuously for around 7 months.

Amelia also had a wee rash similar to what you describe. I have the Weleda Calendula ointment and used that and within 2 days her rash was gone.
I'm using the 'old fashioned' cloth nappies with liners in them (draws the moisture away). I have also found that she appears to get the rash when she's spent a day in disposables (go figure).
