Topic: Babies at funerals Doable??? Posted: 08 June 2007 at 12:33pm |
My mum just sent me a txt to say that my Great Aunty had finally lost her battle with cancer last night. I am going to the funeral come hell or high water (as the saying goes) as she was just like another nana to me. My mum and dad will be going as well and as it will be in Levin, Josh has to come with me. Is there anything I can to make Josh a happy baby at the funeral and is it best for me to sit further back incase I have to make a runner with a grizzle baby?? I was thinking of taking the puchchair and putting him in it and hoping that he will just sleep through it but then I would need to be placed out of the way with the pushchair.
For those that have taken a baby to a funeral what did you take you baby in? Sling, front pack, carseat or Pushchair??

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

We had to go to my husbands grandfathers funeral with McKayla when she was just 2 weeks old. Everyone will understand if baby gets a bit grizzly. Take the pushchair with and just sit close to an isle or close to the back to get out quickly if need be.
Sorry to hear about your guys loss.

Sorry for your loss Becks
My friend's mum tragically died a few months ago and at her funeral there were 2 babies. They took turns chatting and grizzling throughout the service and the parents would take them for a walk around the back of the chapel when they got too rowdy. Nobody minded though and many commented afterwards on how lovely it was to see them there and how glad she would have been to see them.

sorry about your loss.
When I went to my great uncles funeral last year there were lots of young kids and babies, and they were noisy and some were running around and most thought this was a great distraction from the grieving and helped lighten the day and I never heard anyone complain about it at all. Maybe just take the pram and lots of milk. (from memory that's what i did years ago when a friends father died.)

Hugs Mummy_becks, sorry about your great aunt
I've been to two funerals with the gremlins, the first time I nursed Mercedes and had Sienna in the buggy (coz Mercedes had started getting noisy), and at the most recent one last week I just fed them during the service as it was their lunchtime and kept them quiet. Both times I positioned the buggy for easy exit in case they lost th eplot completely but they were absolute angels.

I went to DHs nanas funeral and SIL had to take her baby. She was fine, sitting on her mothers knee, and people were glad to see happy smiling baby there! I guess it is hard if he is not happy and smiling though.

Sorry for your loss Becks.
Ashleigh has also been to two funerals. The first one was my friends little baby that passed - Ash was 4 months old and she slept through the whole thing. I didn't bother taking the pram in with me so just held her. I did sit at the back though so i could leave if she got noisy. The other was DH's grandfather a few months back. There was only immediate family there (10 of us) so it didn't matter at all if she got upset. She just sat on my knee with a quiet toy and was fine. She did do a couple of squeals but it was cool.
Just sit near the back and if you are still breastfeeding then maybe do that during the service.

Sorry to hear about your Great Aunty Becks.
Han went to my grandad's funeral last year and I found it was fantastic to have a kidlet there... took everyone's mind off the sorrow and gives you something else to talk about if it all gets a bit much.
Anyway, I suggest pram as you can rock him off to sleep (hopefully) and gives you an excuse to sit at the end of a row for ease of exit.

My son was 6mths when we went to my uncles funeral, I just carried him in and sat at the back and fed him while the talking was going on... he got a little grumpy so my dad took him for a walk.
I've taken our daughter to one and we transferred her from the carseat to the stroller asleep, and she stayed that way for the whole service. This time I stood at the back with her ready to escape if she woke up..

took both boys to my grandfathers funeral at my father's insitence. Turned out the church had a kids playroom out the back with full audio so the kids ran riot, Lewis st with them and watched and heard the whole thing. check with the church if they have the same thing. apparently pretty common these days

Sorry for your loss
Babies & funerals DO work.
Brae's 1st was when he was 3mnths. We took the pram & stayed close to the back.
He got grisly for the service but no-one really minded We just went for lil walks outside when we needed to.

Yeah, cry-rooms are pretty common... that's where us mums with young babies go during the service so we don't interrupt the whole thing!
Sorry for your loss, Becks.
