I'm looking into getting a baby carrier and have been looking at the two types on Bumbles - 'ergo baby carrier' and 'the peanut shell'.

I'm just wanting to know what people think of baby carriers - are they really worth the money?????

Hi Anna, I have a Baby Gear front pack like this one. It is a front pack only but me or DH can wear it. If the baby falls asleep in it while we are out, she can be transferred to the car seat with her part of the pack still on her. My biggest concern is that it is not very supportive of the head.

Anyways, getting back to your options...
I've never tried a sling but I would be very interested to see if the peanut shell is comfy. It looks like it! I can't see any pics of how it sits at the back? I'd be inclined to not use a sling as old as they suggest but in my experience, once a baby gets to 6mos or so it's much easier to have them in a stroller most of the time.

The baby carrier - it's good that it can go both front and back, you will use this a lot even when the child is older, ie you want to go for a walk or will be standing somewhere for a while. A lot of kids like the view point from daddy's shoulders It looks comfy and supportive, but has no support for baby's head in the early days. A lot of people don't bother with baby packs in the first couple of months but I do and Krystiana is not yet old enough to go completely without head support like that. The biggest advantage I can see of this carrier (over the sling) is that either parent can wear it.

A lot of people on TNN (The Nappy Network) rave about the Ergo.. I don't actually know what it's like but it sounds good!
I had a front pack (can't remember the brand, I borrowed it off someone) and it unclipped so I could (sometimes!) take her off me and lay her in her cot or pram. I found it really useful and used it heaps, it could be rear or front facing. I have a sling I made too, it is really useful and I could probably still carry Ella (3 in June) for short periods of time. It is a simple ring sling that adjusts.

Well I did some research for you, considered making a sling (here's a good pic for avid sew-ers) and in the end have bought a heart to heart one off TradeMe!! I should have stayed off that site LOL!!!

I had a kapoochi front pack but I think we used it twice- I HATED getting her in and out of it, it was so difficult and I never really felt comfortable when wearing it.

This time I've got a natures sway sling- haven't used it as of yet but I think it looks far easier to use and more comfortable. Time will tell!

I had a Natures Sway sling that was given to me, it was used once by myself and then once by my DP then sold on TM. I found it too hard to get Tyrell in and out of it and I didn't find it comfortable.

I then got a Dulce & Zoet sling. It was just fab. So easy to use and put Tyrell in and out of! We can use it till he is about 3 or 4. I still use it now but not as much as I did when he was new born. (he is already 11.88kgs) They have a web site. www.dulceandzoet.co.nz it is very similar to the sling above that you could make.

I've heard good things about the Ergo too, but can't say I've used one yet. I had a sling from Little Kiwi Babyslings which was OK early on, but I think it got stretched somehow and I can't use it now. What I use the most at the moment is our Elite front pack, I find it easy to get on and off even by myself, and Erin loves to be in it facing out so she can see what's going on.

i use the baby gear front pack he can face in or out, not too compilcated to get on and off, i also have the nature sway sling $40 off trade me and looked brand new - bit expensive to buy new!! its real comfy easy to use padded for shoulder but i liked the look of the dulce and zoet brand too. it's good to buy nz made, the peanut one looked nice but quite expensive and you'll curse if you spend lots of $ and then bubs hates being in it!!

I love my ABC carriers (I have a couple ), they can be used right to when they are toddlers and can be used front (in and out facing), side and back. Best of all they are only $57 new or you can whip one up on the sewing machine if you are that way inclined.

I can't recommend them highly enough!

Seconding the Dulce and Zoet slings here! I use one all the time for Kaia and can get Quinn into it too!

I tried a Natures Sway and an Elite front pack and found the D&Z to be the best for us!

I've got a Natures Sway and I love it. Mercedes never liked it much as a newborn but Sienna did and some days it felt like I had been carrying her round in it all day coz it was the only way she would settle. Now Mercedes loves it coz she can sit up in it and be almost at eye level with me so she gets to be nosy and gawk around.

I must say tho that Paws' wee Maddie certainly seems to like her ABC!

ETA: I don't know if I'd be brave enough to buy one online without trying it first. I bought a front pack (forget the brand) when I was preg with Maya and hardly ever used it coz it wasn't comfy and it was fiddly to get on and off. So with the gremlins I deliberately waited till after they were born and went down to the Baby Factory and tried three different ones before I decided on the Natures Sway.

Anna - Thats such a good idea!! I did just order a Dolce and Zoet sling as they do a 30 day trial. I'd still be keen to see both yours and Emmas tho!
