Topic: Ball pit email......scary and gross Posted: 13 November 2008 at 1:18pm |
Ok, I dont normally even bother to read these emails, let alone feel the need to tell anyone else about them. I usually approach with a fair amount of sceptism. But this got me....could just be my hyper hygeinic preggy mind at the moment.
PLEASE READ THIS!! DO NOT IGNORE IF YOU LOVE YOUR KIDS/NIECES/NEPHEWS McDonalds, Burger king, Time Zone... All places with ball pits in the children's play area. One of my sons lost his watch, and was very upset. We dug and dug in those balls, trying to find his watch. Instead, we found vomit, food, faeces, and other stuff I do not want to discuss.
I went to the manager and raised hell.. Come to find out, the ball pit is only cleaned out once a month. I have doubts that it is even done that often. My kids will never play in another ball pit.
Some of you might not be parents, but you may have nieces, nephews, grandchildren, or friends with children.
This will pertain to you too. As I read the following, my heart sank.
I urge each and every one of you to pass this on to as many people as you can. I cannot stress how important this is!
Hi. My name is Lauren Archer, my son Kevin and I lived in Melbourne , Australia . On October 2nd, 1999 I took my only son to McDonald's for his 3rd birthday.
After he finished lunch, I allowed him to play in the ball pit. When he started whining later on, I asked him what was wrong, he pointed to the back of his pull-up and simply said 'Mommy, it hurts.' I couldn't find anything wrong with him at that time. I bathed him when we got home, and it was at that point when I found a welt on his left buttock.
Upon investigating, it seemed as if there was something like a splinter under the welt. I made an appointment to see the doctor the next day, but soon he started vomiting and shaking, then his eyes rolled back into his head. >From there, we went to the emergency room. He died later that night.
It turned out that the welt on his buttock was the tip of a hypodermic needle that had broken off inside.
The autopsy revealed that Kevin had died from a heroine overdose. The next week, the police removed the balls from the ball pit. There was rotten food, several hypodermic needles: some full, some used; knives, half-eaten candy, diapers, faeces, and the stench of urine.
Don't think it's just McDonald's either. A little boy had been playing in a ball pit @ a Burger King & started complaining of his legs hurting. He later died too. He was found to have snake bites all over his legs & buttocks. When they cleaned the ball pit they found that there was a snake's nest in the ball pit.. He had suffered numerous bites from a very poisonous snake.
Repost this if it scares the crap out of you!! Repost this if you care about kids!! Please forward this to all loving mothers, fathers and anyone who loves and cares for children!! What has this world come to?? If a child is not safe in a child's play area then where??

I saw this ages ago, so looked it up , turns out both are hoaxes, Kevin Archer never existed , still, scary to think it COULD happen
"See 1998's "Snakes in the Ball Pit" for the email progenitor of this legend/hoax. The two texts, both false, are strikingly similar. It's gruesome, I know, but people love spreading tall tales about children being mortally injured in places normally regarded as "safe." These stories about fast food restaurant playgrounds are descended from older legends about amusement parks (e.g., snakes in merry-go-round horses and razor blades in water slides). All are cautionary tales warning parents to be vigilant. All are versions of every parent's worst nightmare.
McDonald's has responded to the current rumor with the following statement:
We have thoroughly investigated this rumor and it is absolutely not true. There have been no such incidents ever reported at any McDonald's. In addition, there has never been an article in any newspaper regarding this rumor.
Unfortunately these types of rumors bring unnecessary concerns for our customers. It is important to know that safety is a top priority at McDonald's, especially as it relates to children. We take many precautions to ensure our Playlands are safe.
As for the Houston Chronicle, the paper has been fielding inquiries about the false story since November 1999. Here is its statement:
The "Kevin Archer" e-mail being circulated these days is a hoax. There is nothing to be found in the archives. No such article appeared in this or any other newspaper on Oct. 10, 1994, or any other date as no such or similar incident ever has occurred here or been reported by any news service or in any medical or legal records.
Chronicle writer David Galloway debunked it in detail in his January 9, 2000 column, "Hoax Writers' Technique."
A source at the Midland Reporter-Telegram told me in February 2000 that they, too, were still receiving numerous inquiries about the version of the hoax set in that city. A Feb. 3, 2000 article in the paper confirmed that it's false."
If you google ball pit story , you'll find heaps about it

so my normal sceptism should be trusted
I dont like things like that as its all the snot and goobs over all the balls that gets me. Watching how much Tom puts in his mouth makes me realise others do it too. A ltille immunity is fine but I wonder how much icky stuff is on it too. I'm becoming over protective arent I??

Personally I think in this day and age, there is no such thing as "over protective " , the world is getting more advanced, but it seems to be getting a lot more dangerous too.
I want Caitlyn to fall over and hurt herself, because I want her to learn that if you fall over, it will hurt, but that the pain will eventually go ....and I want her to learn that you do have to strive to get ahead ....but that the race is long and in the end is only with yourself ....but I also want her to be as safe as possible from other people harming her , even if its inadvertently leaving saliva on a ball in a ball pit.
Just my 10 cents (10 because they no longer have 2c or 5c )

if in doubt when you get a "warning" email, check out www.snopes.com.... this includes the million computer virus warnings as well.
I think the balls at ours are fairly clean as every time I go there, someone is just finishing up with a hose and cleaner, gumboots and all.

When I come across emails like this, I always search them on the Snopes site ( www.snopes.com). It's great for sorting fact from fiction
ETA that the site seems to be down at the moment, but I don't doubt this one will be on there

When I was still at school I worked in a McDonald's, and we took the balls out every night and put them into big sacks, took out all the rubbish and vacuumed underneath them. (I used to hate doing it - would get any kids that were left in there to help me and give them a free icecream for their trouble, and they all seemed to love it.) So you don't need to worry about rubbish and needles etc.
That said, the balls themselves NEVER got cleaned - and they got pretty grotty with spilt soft drinks, 'accidents', etc. So if you do let your kids play in them, make sure they wash their hands straight away when they come out

I was also going to say is it a hoax. I was a McD's girl as well and the balls were cleaned once a week where I worked and the whole playground cleaned nightly.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Thanks Becs - you beat me to it - I was going to post that exact fact.
I think that you will find that ALL McDs owners take it pretty seriously, and if you are ever concerned about the clean-ness of the playland / balls you should ask to speak to the shift manager or the owner / restaurant manager if they are on site.
I dont know how often the balls and pits at places like Chipmunks are cleaned though?

I also read this same email a few years ago.
At a local emergency centre here a few years ago, there was a ball pit in the waiting area. But I never allowed my children to play in there because the balls were always dirty. And one day I saw chewed up food that had been spat out, and the next day when we had to return, it was still there! Grose. So now I never allow my kids to play in one. But it has been quite some time since I even saw one.
