Topic: best teat for bottle fed baby? HELP! Posted: 20 November 2008 at 7:39pm |
Thought i would ask this in the general forums -
Im starting to wean ava onto formula (she's nearly 11 weeks old) and I'm so confused about what teat to use. She has a small mouth and has had heaps of problems latching on the breast.
Im not sure wether to go for an orthodontic shape, variable flow, etc etc. Which brands are best for fussy babies?
HELP!

We always liked avent and tommee tippee closure to nature. I guess you will just have to buy a bottle and see if she takes to it.

All of mine have been Avent babies. They were the only ones fusspot Maya would take, the gremlins weren't so fussy but I had an Avent breastpump and steriliser so they got Avent bottles.

My worry is, is that with the Avent it says it promotes natural feeding so the baby has to latch on the same way they do on the breast - which Ava never did well...is that a silly worry? does it matter with bottles?

It didn't seem to worry the gremlins, they were never good latchers and had really small mouths but took the bottles no prob. I have a hilarious photo of Sienna being bottle fed at about 2 weeks old and the teat was almost as big as her face.

Denny right from the start Finley could never latch on right (still struggling but that is a whole different story) and anyway he took avent bottles fro about 10 days old really easily and still does.
I think when they say natural its something to do with the way it feels.

Hmmm, she might be OK with the Avent teats, and *grow* into them as her mouth gets bigger?
We tried Nuk, Avent and plain Tommee Tippee ones but settled for the Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature ones in the end as they seemed to work the best for Jimmy. The length of the teat is much shorter than the Avent ones.
Some people recommend buying the style of teats that most closely resemble your own nipples, althought perhaps that's more important if you want to both BF and bottle feed your baby?

I always used to put as much of the teat as I could in their mouth, same as you do with the areola when you're breastfeeding. With bottles, the more teat they have in their mouth the less air they take in.

OK another question for you! wide neck vs narrow neck. what is the difference apart from obviously the size. is there a reason why people choose one over the other?
I ask because ive narrowed it down to the Avent bottles/teats (wide neck) or Pur (tommee tippee brand) teats and tommee tippee narrow neck bottles. She uses the Pur when ive expressed milk and seems to 'latch on' better.

I think it's just a personal preference thing. Maya would never take the narrow neck ones for some reason, mind you she was fussy!

Hi Denny
I know that some lactation consultants and Speech Therapists seem to like the new Pidgeon ones - because they are very similar to the breast and enable the baby to latch and stay that way more easily. I've seen them in Baby City / Factory and would have bought them if my boy wasn't already happy with Avent.
You can buy them to fit Avent bottles too so if you already have bottles it's not such a big expense.

Cooper has always been a Nuk baby from day one. He wouldnt' take Avent or TT.. so it might be a case of experimenting and seeing what she prefers. There is also the Pur ones too which I found really good for when he was a little wee man.
