Topic: BF help. Clogged duct? Posted: 12 March 2007 at 5:47pm |
Okay never thought I actually might have a problem so late in the game.
My right breast seems to be a bit tender at the one side. When I took a look right after a feed a see that on the nipple there is like a bubble of milk. So tried to express with hand and see if it clears up and milk flows easy but not from that spot.
Is this a clogged duct or what can it be? And how do I deal with it? It was getting a bit tender yesterday but just thought I slept wrong or something. A bit worse today and want it cleared up as quick as possible.

i had something like that when mikey was about 13 months and i was really surprised too, i thought it was something you got at the start of the whole feeding thing.
i talked to my mum when i had it and she said go under a hot shower and put the water right on the breast while you massge down towards where it feels blocked. she also said to feed more from that side to try and suck it out.
none of that worked for me so she gave me a homeopathic remedy (she's a homeopath) and that fixed it up in a couple of hours.
hopefully it gets better soon.

The heat is a good idea - I used to get blocked ducts when I was expressing a lot coz the pump doesn't drain as well as a baby and I found putting a heat pack (or a hot flannel) on while I expressed helped, as well as massaging in the shower like Ella suggested.
Keep a very close eye on it tho - if you develop a red patch or start feeling feverish see your doc straight away coz mastitis sets in really quickly

lol. Okay really laughing at the DH sucking it out part. He actually did tasted my milk in the beginning out of curiousity.
Promise to give it a try if the warm shower and expressing doesnt work.

If you have tried everything and the lump still doesn't go away then it would pay to get it checked out by the doctor.
Not saying you have the same problem or anything, but I am currently bf'ing and noticed a lump a few months back which initially I thought was a clogged duct as well, but nothing worked to get rid of it. My GP referred me to the mercy breast clinic where they did an ultrasound and a mammogram and turns out I will need to have it surgically removed. It is not cancerous, but they have advised that these kinds of things should be taken care of.

I promise I will get it checked out if it doesnt go away. We have breastcancer in both sides of my family so wont take any chances.
there is no lumps however at this stage it is more tenderness in the breast. And then like the milk bubble on the nipple and no milk flowing from that spot.
I fed her a few times through the night instead of rocking. (will have to break that habit if it becomes a habit again but was selfish last night.)
And seems milk is slowly flowing from that spot this morning. I hope she will clear everything in the next two days or so.
Boy you learn something new every day.
