Kiya, I moved into a bed fulltime at 20 months. She'd had some day naps in it already, as it had been in her room along with her cot. When I moved house, I took the opportunity to shift her fulltime, and the cot got dismantled and stored.

We're not sure when we're going to move Joisah. He'll be 17 months old when Baby is born, but he's not quite big enough (physically) to climb up and down the furniture yet... he may be closer to my due date, but probably won't be... he still goes headfirst off things, so there's no way he'll be in a bed before that stops!

Definately, we put kobe into his big boy bed when he was about 18 months and had no problems at all, in fact he hardly even noticed but did start sleeping better. I think he was getting stuck in the sides of the cot which was waking him up. Must admit it was a bit sad for me and I cried but he was cool. We got him a race car bed so the sides are quite high and we dont need one of those things you put on the side. My sister waited until her we girl was 2 1/2 and had heaps of problems as did my friend who put her wee girl into a bed at 2 because by then they new they could get out easy, Kobe was to young and still doesnt get out of bed till we go and get him.

Xander was around 17-18 mnths old.we just put up the single bed and he went in it no worries.has only ever fallen off 3 tmes and we never got the safety rail u can get.

I8f theres somecartoon charachter(nemo, buzz, thomas, bob etcthen maybe buy him the duvet set(expensive i no) as he will associate the bed with the character as being 'safe' if u no wot i mean? we got a nemo duvet for xander (he was mad on that for a yr or so) and it made the big move that much smoother.u can place the bed directly on the floor ie.take the legs off,and have the cot mattress next to the bed in case he rolls off.

if the room is big enuff have both the cot and bed set up and use bed for day naps and then once u think he is coping ok then take the cot down completely.i think he may be too yung to do the cold turkey when u move thing but then he may well understand wot ur saying wen u tell him hes a big boy,he doesnt need the cot anymore etc etc

ummmmm hope sum of this novel is of sum help to you??

Hey Liz, I've had Alex in a "big bed" for his day sleeps for awhile now. I started off putting him in the middle of my bed as he was familiar with that, so maybe you could start with that?
Now Alex is in the spare bed, which is also a king size bed. I do have a single bed with a security rail but I haven't been able to put it up yet as I can't manage it by myself with the big belly.
I'm hoping to get it up this weekend as Spencer has a couple of days off. I'm pretty sure Alex is ready for a bed for his night sleeps but I'm soooooo NOT!
He even takes himself to bed now after waving, saying "non-nighs" and kisses & cuddles all round and I have to grab him to put him in the cot before he jumps into the bed. Talk about ready for a bed & independance!!

Haha I put Arna in a bed when we moved up here (so January - abou 18 months) and we got a touchwood cot that you can take the sides off, we started with a single mattress on the floor and then put her back in the cot!! The reason for that is she changed rooms and I couldnt get the cot out of the door and lost the allen keys!! Anyway she was fine, only waken up about 3 times during the night and fallen out once so it depends on if they want to stay there or not.
We thought it would be hard to put her into a bed cause in her cot she would always move around (end up sideways or head down feet end) but she was fine!

Good Luck

Alyssa was 16-18 months when we moved her and she loved it.

Did have to growl her and threaten to close the door when she started getting up

I was thinking about putting Quinn in a bed around his second birthday... My question is: In the monrings, he wakes up waaaaaay before me and just plays in his cot, is he gonna get out of bed and wake me up early?

And also, does anyone here have a hubby/partner/? who goes to work super early? Quinn sometimes wakes up when Andy gets up, but Andy doesn't get him out of his cot (anymore!), how can I get him to stay in bed when he wakes that early?

no idea! The problem is, sometimes Jake has slept in a queen size - when staying in Sydney for example. He constantly falls out of this! A queen size!! so, i better get a rail for a single bed, cause I think he'll fall out a lot.
Hmmm, might look into a single bed and stuff though. problem is, it's so expensive - not just the bed, but the sheets, duvet, duvet cover - winter and summer.

We moved Maya at 18 mths, because we had been away overseas for a month so it seemed like a good time - she came home to a new bed. I was in tears as I took her cot to pieces tho! We didn't have any major probs, a couple of days of having to put her back in when she came out, then she got the message. But she was stoked with her new bed. We used a safety rail as well, took it off when she was 2 1/2 because she decided she was a 'big girl' and kept taking it off herself.

Anna, Willie goes to work at 4am and Maya often wakes up. Wish I had some good advice but unfortunately he usually just puts her in our bed and she goes back to sleep. That will be stopping big time when we get back from Oz next week as it has to stop before the babies come, and as far as I'm concerned the sooner the better!

Liz,why not start buyng the bed linen now??? altho that means more to take when u move lol.

We opted for a cheap 130 dollar bed from the warehouse(incl mattress and pillow)as it got pointed out to me that y buy expensive bed to start with when theres bound to be overnight accidents due to toilet trainng.and if it stains the mattress that would suck.

Xanders is only a foam one but we have an underblanket then a mattress protector then sheet so wetness only goes thru to the protector.there a those waterproof mattresss tho so will get one of those too.

Liz, We just rolled up a pillow and put it under alyssa's mattress. It did the trick on stopping her from falling out. Cheaper than a rail too! Also with the getting up early I just used to send her back to bed or say she could play in her room until mummy got up. Worked great.

i've been thinking about this lately too. we are re-decorating the spare room for jack to move into before bubs is born and i'm worried he will fall out of his big boy bed like arna, jack always moves around his cot. he never stays at the same end all night long. i've seen a really cool race car bed at the warehouse which i think i'll get for him. it's quite low to the ground so if he falls, it won't be too far. also, it may make him more inclined to sleep in it cos it's a car bed

I've seen that too! So cute! Am planning to o to Briscoes "the boss has been convicted of embezellement" sale, and get some single sheets. I'm hoping Jake will be okay with having a new bed, especially since taine will get his old one. he may be miffed. Oh well, won't deal with it til july when I head back to Gisborne.

No your not Nikki cause I do the same!! Arna is a nosy parker and when we left the door open she would always come out and also the kitten goes into her room all the time and Arna prefers to play with "Puss" so we keep it closed - she knocks on the door or yells Mummy when shes awake so its all good

i just had a thought today about heaters in kids rooms. jack has a oil heater in his room and we were going to get another one to put in his new room, but what if he gets up and plays with it or touches it and burns himself?? what do you all do to keep the room warm? maybe i should get a guard for it?
