Hi I had my baby at Middlemore. It wasn't planned for there, I had good intentions of being in Papakura but had to be induced. My midwife was there for the birth but we had fantastic support from the floor midwife, anesthetists and pediatricians.
My only issue was with the nurses on the maternity ward the next day. It took forever to get discharged and the first nurse we had seemed completely disinterested in helping us.

With my first I got transferred to middlemore from Pukekohe due to not progressing, I found the labour midwives really nice and helpful. I ended up with an emerg CS and they made me feel very safe. (had my daughter there via elective CS and had a great experience)
The ward nurses...hit and miss! Some were great some were awful!

Same as Sheza - I got transferred from Pukekohe due to slow labour progress. I thought Middlemore would be awful but I was pleasantly surprised with the birthing facilities & process. They have awesome delivery staff, I couldn't fault them. The wards are a different story - avoid at all costs! I have heard others say the same. There was a real lack of nursing staff available, the healthcare assistants didn't seem to want to help or those that did didn't know what they were doing, I picked up an eye infection & the floors in the wards were dirty! Pukekohe on the other hand was awesome, it's great if you can transfer out to a birthing centre after giving birth.

I went to Middlemore with my 3rd cos I was meant to be induced, but labour started by itself, and I had my MW and her student MW,I liked that I had the option of pain relief (had 2 drug free births before, but was nice to have the option this time) and that if anything went wrong,(which it started to,baby went into distress) there was a dr,who actually did come in,just as I thought "stuff this,I want this baby out" and started pushing.
Anyway im rambling, but I found it no better,no worse than Nation Womens or Botany, where I gave birth to the other two.
Couldn't tell you about staying there though,I transferred to Botany an hour after giving birth to her

I was sent to middlemore as my waters broke at 36 weeks (planned to birth at Pukekohe), found the assessment and delivery midwives awesome. Bubs was breeh so ended up with a c-section. The theatre staff were great. However as the others have said the ward nurses were very slow to respond and I couldn't get back to Pukekohe fast enough.

Yeah after my elective, I harped on at them so I could get the heck out of there and to pukekohe! Got back to Pukekohe at about 1pm the next day(have to stay at least 24 hours after a CS).
The ward nurses at middlemore took forever to get to me when I pressed the buzzer, and that SUCKS after a CS when you can barely get out of bed With DS, my blimmin buzzer fell down and I couldnt get it, I couldnt get up cos I was still half numb and DS was screaming, so stressful!

I'd had an epidural and still couldn't move my legs and the ward nurse told DH he should go home and that I should watch my babay (3 hours old) as she seemed to be coughing and spilling a bit - how was I supposed to get out of bed?? So DH stayed regardless of her enthusiasm for him to leave.

I was supposed to birth at Pukekohe as well but baby got really distressed so had an emergency ambulance trip to Middlemore. The midwifes were great, and I was so happy to have the doctors there when needed as he had the cord around his neck 3 times and had to have pead support for a few mins after birth.
DP had to leave about an hour after the birth, even before I had showered.
The food is absolute crap and I ended up getting DP to get me something from the (expensive) cafe.
Transferred back to Pukekohe the next morning which was fabulous.

Hi, I gave birth to both my children at Middlemore. With my first born, it was absolutely "horrible". One of the ward nurses dropped the bassinet where my 6 hour old baby was sleeping in. She cried for hours and refused to feed all the sudden and we had to get a pediatrician to ensure she was OK. The nurse didn't even apology. Instead she said, "that's totally fine sweetheart". Pediatrician said we need to monitor my new born for a several days in case of brain damage. Thank goodness, she is OK now. But, it was really scary seeing my new born's head bouncing up and down several times. Then, another ward nurse pulled out my catheter(I had 3rd degree tear) to show the visitors where it is so, they can be careful. She yanked it so hard that I screamed out x??xc**c in front of my in laws. I wasn't impressed at all. Then, she had to insert the catheter again. Ouch!
With my second one, I thought I might give a Middlemore another go since I had such an awesome midwife. She doesn't have the access to Auckland hospital. So, I decided to go to Middlemore again. Thought, last time, it was just a bad luck... But again, one of the nurse who weighed and measured my boy was so rough that all of my visitors' jaws were dropped... She pulled out foreskin of my boy so hard that it was red with a bit of tear and swollen the next day, she lifted my new born by the neck, etc etc... This time was not as bad as last time but, still careful handling of a new born is not that difficult and would have been much appreciated... With my second baby, I specifically asked my midwife not to send in any nurses unless it is absolutely necessary. That was a good decision.
In one sentence, go elsewhere if you can. If you have no choice, make sure you have a close eye on the nurses. Some of them don't even communicate that well.
Hope your experience is not as bad as mine if you choose to go to Middlemore. Having a good midwife makes a world of difference.
Good luck!
