Topic: Blighted Ovum Posted: 04 June 2008 at 10:29pm |
I didn't know really where else to ask this. But knew there are some women on OB that have suffered from blighted ovums, so hopefully they may see this.
My question is: during an ultrasound scan, does the pregnancy sac have an odd shape? I read this somewhere on another forum - "If it was a blighted ovum, then the sac would look a funny, almost deflated, shape."
So in your experience, did the sac look like this, or any different from a normal developing sac?
Thankyou for sharing :)
Also read that a brown discharge is more common with a blighted ovum. Have also read this can also be common during a normal pregnancy too.

Hi Bizzy, I haven't been diagnosed with a blighted ovum, but do have to have another scan in 2 weeks.
I just happened to come across that comment in another forum last night and was curious.
The brown discharge I had has gone now. Oh and the sac didn't have the odd shape in my scan the other day.

Sorry, can't answer. I didn't have the brown discharge, mind was red which progressed to the MC. These next couple of weeks are going to very hard for you....good luck. If you're anything like me you'll be surfing the internet big time!

Our last angel was a blighted ovum pregnancy and on the scan the gestational sac looked perfect, it was just too small. It was also missing a yolk sac which is a classic indicator of a blighted ovum. With a blighted ovum the gestational sac forms but nothing else develops.
I didn't have any brown discharge or spotting, I just woke up one morning at 7 weeks bleeding and that was that. A scan that morning showed the sac was too small for dates and two days later I had an emergency d and c coz I was losing too much blood. Prior to that I had slow rising hCG levels, they never got about 1500 despite me being 7 weeks.
Conversely, in my two subsequent viable pregnancies I've had multiple episodes of spotting/bleeding which just goes to show that spotting in itself is not always a bad omen.

Hey lovey!
I had a blighted ovum in 2004. I just had a look at my scans and the sac looks like a normal shape, but that's all it is.
I had my scan at what would've been 6w3d, but it was measuring 5w1d.
DH and I were so shocked at the scan we didn't ask the radiographer to elaborate when she said "There's nothing there, sorry".
I didn't have hcg serials done, so I can't help on the levels, sorry.
I had no spotting or bleeding to indicate anything was wrong - I had an early scan for dating purposes, not because we thought anything was wrong.
I got booked in for a D & C 2 weeks later as my GP wanted to see if I'd naturally miscarry first. I was climbing the walls in that time as I just wanted it all to be over.
But the D & C was straight forward and quick, so the physical side of things, for me at least, was minimal.
Big hugs to you!
I wish you all the best

Hmm well, when I had my m/c, on my scan the sac was round, and then with this pregnancy the sac was peanut shaped. Both at around 6 weeks gest.
My m/c was a blighted Ovum.
I also had lots of brown discharge that just got heavier and heavier, Started bleeding on the Tuesday had scan on the Thursday and then m/c fully on the Friday morning.

Hi there
I really hope your next scan gives you a clear answer - the wait is long, I know.
My pregnancy sac wasn't an odd shape, however my bleeding changed from brown to bright red.
When I was going through the unknowns, the medical people reassured me many, many times that bleeding occurs in many pregnancies that go full term.
Thinking of you and wishing you the best in your pregnancy.

I know this topic hasnt been mentioned for a while, But I wanted to knowhow things went, I went to get a scan at what I thought was just before 7 weeks and they said that just the gestational sac was there, so they wanted me to return in a week to 10 days, so I am going for a scan on wensday to see if anything is there, I am hoping I was just 2 weeks of with my dates, I havnt had any abnoraml spotting or cramping and HCG levels were up to 48800 last time checked 5 days ago. So my fingers are crossed, just wanted to hear from anyone who has had a sucseful Misdiagnosed Bligted ovum or anyone who has also experienced wrong dates with just a gestational sac.
