Hi everyone,

We've just found out I'm pregnant - we're so excited!

We also feel completely clueless and would like to buy a great book about pregnancy (or perhaps one that goes from pregnancy through the first few months or year).

I went into the bookstore, but felt overwhelmed by the range! Can anyone recommend a great book?

Thanks!
Excited

i have read "what to expect when you are expecting", and a couple of others, but found up the duff the best.

and if you look on trademe you can find these books on there.

Hi there, and welcome! I too recommend 'Up the Duff'. It's interesting, informative AND funnny. A great book.

I read 'up the duff' as well and also have the 'New Zealand Pregnancy Book' by Sue Pullon, it has a lot of information in it about heaps of things, like how your body changes, options for care and delivery, development of the foetus, the equipment you will need when baby is born etc.

Up the Duff and New Zealand Pregnancy Book are my preferred ones....if you can get a hold of What to Expect that's quite good too though I found it a little over whelming and heavy...not all of it sat that well with me if it makes sense...still some good info though.

What to expect when you're expecting
What to expect: The First Year
What to expect: The Toddler Years.

These books are awesome, we're onto the toddler one now and they have so much information on everything!

Yeah Little Treasures are great, and for $21 a year good value.

I'm lucky that I get to do the OHbaby! Book Reviews, so get given a heap of books to read and get paid for it.

NZ Pregnancy Book by Sue Pullon is good as some others have suggested, as is The Users Guide to the NZ Pregnancy and The Users Guide to the NZ Baby both by Nicola Miller-Clendon. She's a midwife and Mum of 5 so really knows her stuff.

I'm a huge fan of the Kaz Cooke pregnancy book as well, and she's done a follow-on called "Kidwrangling" which goes from early months right through the toddler years.

I really liked Oh Baby... by Kathy Fray. She is also a NZer and mum. Very common-sense middle of the road ideas, but also describes all your options. It explains about later pregnancy, labour and birth and newborn stuff. Also have found it incredibly helpful in adjusting to being a mum. Cant rave enough about it!

I also have up the duff and the nz pregnacy book. All are good in their own ways and it depends on what you are looking for. I would get them out of the library first and then if one really takes your fancy buy that one.

one reason I like little treasures was it has topics that aren't metioned in other palces. this month they talk about being happy as a SAHM. I thought I was the only being driven crazy by staying home all the time!
made me feel more normal!

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate all your recommendations.

I bought 'Up The Duff' and 'The Users Guide to the New Zealand Pregnancy'. They make a great pair.

Cheers everyone!

There is a book which my mum had when she was pregnant with me (hrmmm... so 21 years old) and it was awesome because it had real life photos taken with some sort of flash device of fetuses throughout the pregnancy. It was cool to see a 3D image of what your baby would look like at that stage.
Also had images of people giving birth, not for the squeamish but informative.
Not sure what it had to say in the text, I was busy ogling the pics!
Might want to check the library? Then you don't have to fork out. Anyway, I'll find the name of the book when I talk to my mum next.

EKCD I have a copy of the NZ Pregnancy book if you would like it. My mum works at a library and gave it to me because the pages are falling out and it is kind of ripped, but it doesn't affect any, you can still read it. If you would like it just PM me your address and i will send it to you.
