Hi,

Just have some queries about bottle feeding. My little man is gaining steady weight so that is good, but for the last 4/5 days is not feeding as well, he used to happily chug through a bottle 100 - 150 without issue, now he is fussing around a lot more.

A few nights ago, DH tried to feed when he really wasn't hungry and he got quite upset, now sometimes when we try and offer the bottle after a mere 50 or 70ml he gets really cross again so we stop and wait, but sometimes he is not interested for a couple more hours.

Now I feel like he is grazing through the day, which is resulting in making lots of bottles and then chucking lots out. Having said that some feeds he is just fine, for example all night feeds no fussing at all.

He is on a no2 teat which should be fine, but I might try the next size up later today to see if that makes a difference.

Any thoughts/ideas, just concerned he is now not drinking what he needs to.

If he isn't spluttering and choking on it then yes. I tried Spencer at 3 months but it was too fast for him and we had to wait till about 4 months but they are all different. If he's drinking from it happily then its all good.

Did he feed frequently on the breast? Spencer was a little feeder and even when weaned at 3 months he still use to feed every 2-2.5 hours, he never went 3 hourly until on solids. Some babies just feed little and often.

The other thing is that they do go through periods of growth spurting so he may have been spurting when he was chugging the 100-150ml and now he has settled back down. They have spurts around 6 weeks and then again at 3 months.

Is also normal for them to drink more first thing in the morning and then less throughout the day.

Hope some of that helps.

No coughing or spluttering so will keep going with it.

Ok still happening today we offer the bottle cos he is hungry, he drinks like normal for aboutt 50ml and then screams if we offer more. His jabs were only just on Friday, wondering if he is just off his food a bit - guess he will eat more when he's hungry.

He's just always been so good on the bottle, worried something is wrong

Oh can that happen too, never even thought about it, has always been on avent bottles and used to be fine, do you think its worth trying a different brand bottle?

I personally wouldn't go out and buy new bottles as he was taking the Avent ones quite happily until not long ago.

100-150mls is quite alot for a little baby anyway so maybe he is just reducing to what he is comfortable with. Is he routine or demand fed?

My DS was demand feed until about 10 weeks and he used to take odd amounts so I only ever made up my bottles to 100mls and then gave the left overs to the dog! If he needed more then I would make more. He would feed every 2-2.5 hours at around 6 weeks to 9 weeks and would take anywhere between 60mls and 120 mls.

There is a formula to working out what they should be getting per 24 hour period. I think its 150mls x body weight = how much they should be having in a 24 hour period / by number of bottles in a day and that is roughly how much they should be having each bottle.

Josh went through stages of fussing with the bottle and wanting small frequent feeds rather than full feeds. We use to make up a bottle and pour half into a bottle for him and put the rest in the fridge to heat up later to stop wasting so much (its spose to be ok for 24 hours if refrigerated they just recommend u make it fresh when possible and dont save bottles baby has already drunk from cos slober has bacteria)

Josh kept going up and down with his teats as well so dont be afraid to go back to a slower teat if you do start having problems with the 3. The ages are just recommendations on them based on average children and i havent really hear of an average baby yet haha
