Topic: Can you all help me...? Posted: 26 April 2006 at 5:06pm |
Hi ladies
I am trying to put a council submission together to start a waste minimisation scheme in Dannevirke. Basically the plan is to give every new baby through the hospital a trial pack of Fuzzi Bunz. I think that most new parents would like to use cloth nappies (both financially and environmental conscience) but dont know about all the options available now, so they try flat nappies, pins and covers, find its too difficult and then end up using disposables.
So what I want from you all is a quick survey...
If you are pregnant or TTC, are you planning on using cloth nappies?
If so, have you looked into modern cloth nappies?
If you already have children, are you using cloth?
Did you plan on using cloth, but end up switching to disposables? Why?
Would it be/have been helpful in your decision making to get a free modern cloth nappy?
Any other comments?
Thanks heaps, will let you know how I get on.

well I have thought about it - I am very keen on the idea of cloth but the whole "hassle"aspect puts me off - still undecided about it but like the idea of cloth!
If so, have you looked into modern cloth nappies?
Yup - looks at fuzzibuns and another brand on the internet
If you already have children, are you using cloth?
dont have any other kids
Did you plan on using cloth, but end up switching to disposables? Why?
cant answer that yet but it may well happen
Would it be/have been helpful in your decision making to get a free modern cloth nappy?
definately! I am reluctant to spend a lot of money on nappies that may turn out to be too much trouble to actually use but I woudl be keen to try them out!
Any other comments?

We are very keen on the modern cloth method as they look just as easy to use as disposables and are heaps cheaper! I think that the more people are exposed to the product the better
If so, have you looked into modern cloth nappies?
Yup, and with heaps of info from the fantastic Fuzzi Bunz rep
If you already have children, are you using cloth?
This is baby #1 but if we have more I aim to re-use my Fuzzi Bunz.
Did you plan on using cloth, but end up switching to disposables? Why?
cant answer that yet - hoping that won't happen!
Would it be/have been helpful in your decision making to get a free modern cloth nappy?
Definately! or at least to have them discussed at midwife or antenatal classes with samples so we can have a proper look.
Good luck Aimee!

I'm pregnant, and planning on using modern cloth nappies - either Rosie's naps or Snazzipants (or maybe Fuzzibunz). I'll be using newborn-sized disposables for the first few weeks though, as so many people have advised me to and said that they're the best kind for newborn's toilet habits.
If so, have you looked into modern cloth nappies?
As above - looked at heaps of brands.
If you already have children, are you using cloth?
This is our first baby.
Would it be/have been helpful in your decision making to get a free modern cloth nappy?
My decision is made already, before baby is born - but a free cloth nappy would always be helpful!!!
Any other comments?
Waste minimisation sounds fantastic - good on you!

I am using disposables for the convenience more than anything. I used cloth with my 1st because of the financial benefit and also as it was 15 years ago it was more common to use cloth.
I would have tried a fuzzi bunz if I had of had one in my hospital bag most definately and may have been converted?????!!!!! Approx 6 out of the 12 mums in my coffee group started out using fuzzi bunz and now 1/2 have switched to disposable.
The concept is wonderful there is no doubt. This may be me trying to justify my lack of environmental conscience but I wonder about the use of powders, power and water needed to wash them. The power to dry them through winter and my final excuse is the convenience when we are away or out in public?
In saying all that I am curious about them and would certainly give them a go if I had a sample. (from birth)
Best of luck with your venture, I hope your lobbying works.

Here you are Aimee! Not much help but am in the middle of packing and have no time
If you already have children, are you using cloth?
Yes!
Did you plan on using cloth, but end up switching to disposables? Why?
At first yes. Because as a new mum I found it so overwhelming coming to grips with everything without having all of the extra washing to do as well (or so I thought) I hadn't discovered modern pocket nappies at that stage and thought I would use old fashioned flats...yeah right!!
Would it be/have been helpful in your decision making to get a free modern cloth nappy?
Yeah, that would have shown me way earlier!
Any other comments?

No, I haven't even considered using cloth nappies.
I know it's not P.C. when it comes to the environment, but this is my first baby and until I know how hard things are going to be, I don't want the extra inconvenience/stress of trying out cloth nappies.
There are a couple of older ladies at work who said they didn't have disposibles back in the day when they had babies, but since they have used them on their grandchildren they think they're great.

Hey Aimee!! I prob won't be much help...
Started off (@ 20wks preggaz) with the intention of using cloth, however mum brought the old style (I was so nieve i didn't even know there were "modern" ones out there!) When Arna was born I was in and out of hospital for a month so was easier using disposables and out of sheer laziness she is still in them to this day... (not the same one!)
When #2 comes along (one day....) I intend on researching more and putting the money in upfront to get the modern disposables.. I don't see it as being too much extra work (washing etc) as I will be a 100% stay at home mum when #2 comes around.
I know I didn't answer your ?'s in order but I hope that helps!!
GOOD LUCK!

If you are pregnant or TTC, are you planning on using cloth nappies? Yes planning to.
If so, have you looked into modern cloth nappies? Vaguely, will do more research before the gremlins are born
If you already have children, are you using cloth? I did use cloth until she was TT
Did you plan on using cloth, but end up switching to disposables? Why? Nope, planned to use cloth, and used cloth
Would it be/have been helpful in your decision making to get a free modern cloth nappy? Yes. When Maya was born I thought the only option were the good old white cloth squares.
Any other comments? I agree with what Lena said about maybe giving the trial pack in a size to fit 6 weeks or so, as in the first few weeks most people are a bit overwhelmed with it all. I used disposables till Maya was about a month old, and plan to do the same with the twins.

If you are pregnant or TTC, are you planning on using cloth nappies? Not Pg or TTC!
If so, have you looked into modern cloth nappies? -
If you already have children, are you using cloth? No way!
Did you plan on using cloth, but end up switching to disposables? Why? Yes, first time around, but I'm not cloth napping 3 kids for 18 months!
First time around - those damn cloth squares at the hosp totally put us off - changing them ALL the time b/c they were always wet - fine when the hosp is doing your washing, but not at home. Couldn't wait to get out of the hosp to get him into disp and keep him dry for longer than an hour.
Would it be/have been helpful in your decision making to get a free modern cloth nappy? Yes - never knew about modern cloth then (2 and half years ago!), so would have loved to try.
Any other comments?

Yes definately
If so, have you looked into modern cloth nappies?
Yes! I know all about them LOL
If you already have children, are you using cloth?
Yes
Did you plan on using cloth, but end up switching to disposables? Why?
Nope
Would it be/have been helpful in your decision making to get a free modern cloth nappy?
Definately. It always helps to be able to see what you might be buying. Helps the decision making.
Other comments
I would recommend giving out Small size rather than newborn, more likely to get used and some babies will only fit newborn size for a couple of weeks.

5. Yes it would have been. I bought Fuzzibunz (just the small size for the mo!), but hadn't seen them in the flesh before I bought them.
6. I think that what you are doing is a really good idea! Best of luck

After talking with a friend who has used fuzzibunz with both her children i think it is definitely the way to go, both for the baby and the environment.

I have never used cloth nappies because I just cant imagine them not being an added hassle. I think giving one to try is a great idea and would certainly give them a go

I've been thinking about it.

Started to but I'm still very confused!

I'm most worried about the washing and cleaning aspect as a new mum so education on that side of it would be great too!

I wish we got a free one, I had to have Jack in cloth cos of his clicky hip and the hospital staff never even mentioned modern ones so i went to disposables at 6 weeks when his hip was fixed but am now looking into getting cloth. Also I wish there was a shop where u cud hav a look at some different kinds of modern cloth cos i don't really want to commit without ever having seen one.

If so, have you looked into modern cloth nappies?
YES BUT THE OUTLAY WAS TOO EXPENSIVE AT THIS STAGE
If you already have children, are you using cloth?
YES
Did you plan on using cloth, but end up switching to disposables? Why?
N/A
Would it be/have been helpful in your decision making to get a free modern cloth nappy?
POSSIBLY
Any other comments?
Found the cloth nappies at the hospitals are smaller than the ones you buy in the shops and all the nurses fold the nappies differently, it would have been nice to have had something easier other than disposables to try.
