Topic: Cant keep down my folate Posted: 08 January 2007 at 11:58am |
The last three days have been total shockers for morning sickness (just when I thought it was passing), and I haven't kept down anything, even my Elevit tablets.
My obstetrician said it was really important to take them every day for the first 13 weeks, so I'm quite worried - if I throw up my tablet after 20 minutes, have I absorbed enough folate for it not to be a problem?

After 20 mins I'd say it hasn't had enough time to absorb into your system completely. Is there any time of the day when you feel ok and could take them when you are feeling your best? It's what I did. I felt best at lunch so I took it then rather than in the morn

I took my tablets at night as that was the best time for me. I also didn't take the whole amount of folate with this pregnancy as I didn't find out I was pregnant until I wsa 7 weeks and by the time I saw my MW I was 9 weeks so only took them for the last 4 weeks of the 1st trimester.

The time of day doesn't seem to matter at the moment. With food, without food, with water, with juice, with milk, with tea, straight after ginger tablets.... it just comes back up within 10-20 mins.
I'll keep trying.

I was going to suggest taking your tablets in the afternoon/evening too.

Hmm you might wanna ask your doctor or someone for something to relieve the morning sickness then if it's that bad

Yep give your Doc/MW a call cause if you aren't keeping down folate you probably aren't keeping anything down

Thanks guys for all the comments.
Since my big whinge above things have actually improved somewhat. I felt a bit better about 45 mins ago so I had some crackers with avocado spread on them, and I took my Elevit tablet at the same time. So far so good! If I keep feeling ok I might have some slices of fruit soon.
I was going to ring my doctor this evening if it hadn't improved, but hopefully I won't have to now.

Glad you are feeling better. I was going to say that if you are being sick anyway (ie not just cos of the pills) then wait until you have just thrown up and then take them It is generally a little while before you need to throw up again!!! I had to do that with my breakfast as brushing my teeth would get me going. So I would brush my teeth, visit the toilet, then eat my toast on the way to work, was the only way to keep it down! Sheesh, the things us woman go through aye
