Hi all
We are moving to Christchurch at the end of Jan and I was wondering if anyone knows of a good Day care centre preferably in the CBD where I will be working.
I love the day care DD is at now because all the children play together and are not separated by there ages. Also what are the 'good' areas in Christchurch?
Any help would be awesome, im so clueless, I dont know anyone who lives down there so going in blind.

A good day care near the CBD is The Playroom on Manchester St. TBh I think most DC's in Christchurch separate the kids mostly into over and under 2's but newer ones are doing 3 or 4 rooms.

My boys DC is awesome but its out a wee bit from the city.

Areas really depend on what you are looking for. I personally love St Albans. I have also lived in Bishopdale, Burnside, Bryndwr way and have enjoyed that too.

I dont really know what im looking for in an area, DH is going to be working in Addington and me in the CBD so really as long as we aren't miles out of town its fine. We aren't wealthy so just a middle class family type area.

How old is your child ? My daughter was in a fabulous preschool near the cbd but they had to close the under twos area ( so i have moved her to another great centre in avonside )if you want the cbd and  your child is over 2 then i would recomend Elim early learning centre , its run by the Elim church and is very small and homely , not flash at all but the teachers make it totaly worth it (when my dd was there all the children were mixed and she loved being around the older kids- a shame they closed the under twos). I must admit i already miss the teachers at elim , they were absolutly lovely !

My dd's new preschool is far superior in terms of the centre and facilities and has 4 seperate rooms . her current centre is Lolipos educare in avonside (about 10min from the city) and they are also a great centre (dont get me wrong the staff there are nice too, i just find them to be a bit busier so therefore dont have as much time as the staff at Elim ) , anyway thats my 2cents , both centres are well priced too and flexible with hours , Elim didnt supply food or nappies but lolipops supplys both which makes things easier when packing bags .

Area wise I'd recommend Halswell. My parents live there and when we buy our own place, that is where we will be buying. It's very family oriented, and great schools in the area too. It's not too far from town. Only takes 20mins max to get into the CBD (DF and I used to live with my parents and I work in town). We currently live in Hornby/Hei Hei area and hate it with a passion. Just don't feel safe here.
Child care wise, not 100% sure as when I return to work, my Mum will be minding Isla as I'm only going back part time. But I did do a bit of research just on the off chance that Mum couldn't look after her and I really LOVED The Nurtury. Very homely and only new as well. It is in Halwell/Wigram area. They even have pigs/goats/chickens etc that the kids can help feed etc! And a vege garden. They separate the under twos and the 2+ kids. There is a kitchen in between them, so they can still see each other thru the kitchen (which is fenced off obviously).

We have just recently enrolled our son in Kiwikids, its in Hillmorton, just of Lincoln Rd which is not far from Addington. It seems like a great centre, there is three rooms- nursery, 2-3yo and 3-5yo, They provide meals.

We live in Hei Hei too, and I agree with you that it doesn't feel like the safest of areas. Can't wait to put our house on the market sometime next year and move.

One of my friends sends her girl to the Nutury and she loves it there.

I really like the suburbs Bishopdale or Burnside. Would love to move to that side of town eventually.

naysgirl - Hornby never used to be too bad but I think just the last few months it has really changed. I feel bad for my dog cause I'm too afraid to take him for walks now cause there are so many big scary dogs on the loose and I'm terrified that one will come and attack us! Just seems to have been an influx of nasty looking people with nasty looking dogs! Have had vandals around our place lately too. Smashing the lights on my car, breaking off my windscreen wipers, smashing our letter box etc. NOT the kind of place I want my daughter growing up that's for sure!

Definetly, thats why we would like to move too, to a slightly better area and one with better schools (gosh that sounds so snobbish!!) The vanadals will probably be silly school kids looking for a kick who don't care about other people's properties, stuff like that really annoys me! There are certainly alot of angry dogs around. I have kind of learnt what houses the dogs live in so when I am walking our 2 dogs I tend to avoid them as some people's dogs really go off when you walk past! Not nice when you have a pram and 2 dogs to control.

Sorry, kind of went of on a tangent to what this thread was about!!

Wow just went and had a look at The Nurtury online, it looks awesome, Have already sent an enquiry I hope they have spaces for an under two.
Zoeymil do you know what they charge for an under 2? Also what do they provide in terms of nappies, milk ect?
Also really like the enchanted garden, anyone heard of it?

Leelee, my son goes to KiwiKids too and has for 18 months. He absolutely loves it and I think the teachers are fab. They provide food, and I provide the nappies. I love the outside play areas and it's age separated too. Under 2s, 2-3ish and then over 3s.

Enchanted garden is just down the rd from my boys daycare. I looked at it and personally didn't like it and have known 4 lots of kids that went there 2 hated it and 2 loved it.

If you are looking that far from town check out Rabbit Patch. The Saffron Street one is a new build and is really wicked. Was tempted to move my boys. Also Minevira (?spelling) is new and looks really nice and the couple who own it are really nice.

I know that for my boy to go fulltime including food is around $250 a week now.
