Topic: Christmas Traditions Posted: 01 December 2009 at 9:49am |
I'd like to start a Christmas tradition since it's my first Christmas as a mum but I have no idea what sort of thing to do. I'd like to do something that involves Benjamin (and future children!) - maybe taking a photo in a certain place or some kind of celebration. Anything really!
Do you have any family Christmas traditions? If so what are they?
Would love to hear what you do so feel free to share!

I STILL have my first christmas ornament - Baby's first christmas 1980 which gets hung up every year. Perhaps you could do the same?
I'm also getting into the habit of decorating christmas cookies with DP's daughter but she's almost 6.

We're doing the decoration thing. Dad beat me to it last year and got me, Matt and Thomas a bauble for the tree each, but i'll continue it this year.

We have started the decoration tradition (someone on OB gave me the idea) I let Joy choose one decoration per yer for the tree and when she grows up and moves out she can take them with her.
We are also building up our christmas book collection so that in our fabric advent calendar we can put a lolly for each child per day and then write the name of a story and that's the one we ave to read that day.
Might take a while to build up 24 christmas stories though.

Everytime there is a new family member in DH's family, they get taken to the Christmas shop to choose an ornament to hang on the tree. I got mine last year, and this year I need to choose two for the girls.

I run a gift store and there are heaps of traditions that our regular customers keep in terms of buying something special to commemorate each year. There are the Bunnykins age figurines, the christmas ornaments, soft toys, peter rabbit colleactbles and all sorts. I never really had anythign to keep liek that and I think it's great that peopel do that sort of thing now :)

I copied someone else on here and on Christmas Eve DS gets to open a "present" in it is new PJ's and a wee treat. He gets to get the treat and I get him changed into his PJ's so he has nice clean ones for the photos in the morning
I also do the decoration thing - DS gets to pick his one this year. We go into town and get his photo with Santa and his decoration. He gets a wee tree in his room to put his decorations on.

Kelly I LOVE that film! My parents used to read us the night before christmas every christmas eve so I'm looking forward to buying a beautiful version of the book and reading it to my own children one day.

I started lots last year but I can't remember half of them. There were a couple I started to do with food - like baking and icing stars to hang on the tree. And on Christmas Day morning I baked spicy orange and cranberry muffins - that way she'll associate Christmas with the smell of grated orange and cloves/cinnamon etc.
And I have bought a beautiful popup version of the Nutcracker which I'll read to her on Christmas Eve (of course I had to buy it seeing as 'Clara' is the lead character )

we dont really have any... i have a santa photo from each year tho.
this year at playgroup tho we got make up bags of reindeer food. it was oats mixed with glitter and other shiny stuff and a letter that goes with it for your child telling them to sprinkle it on the lawn for the reindeer cause they will be very hungy and the lights will show them the way! sounds a bit tidier than the year i spread straw through the house to show hubbys son that santa had been ...

I love that film too Kelly, and yup put it on every Christmas. I know my parents still have Christmas decorations my brother and I made in kindergarten on their tree.
Our only Christmas tradition is too spend the day eating far too much food for lunch and feeling ill for the rest of the day.

We have a few - some that we started and some from when we were kids.
- buy a decoration for each kid each year... when they leave home, they'll take their decorations with them
- every Christmas Eve, the kids open one present, and it's always new pjs (exciting going to sleep in new pjs, and looks nice for photos in the morning!)
- stocking presents can be opened straight away, lots of little things (only pressies from santa), big pressies wait til all the immediate family is there
- always put up the Christmas tree as a family and have cheesy Christmas music playing in the background

Lots of great ideas! I actually started the Christmas ornament idea last year while I was pregnant and until Benjamin is old enough to pick his own I'll keep picking one for him.
I love the idea of the PJ's on Christmas Eve too! And reading a story each Christmas Eve - very convenient for you anakk but I think I might struggle to find a Christmas story with 'Benjamin' as the lead character!! Bizzy the reindeer food is great! I'll keep that one in mind for the next few years! Oh and sunnyhoney the Christmas stories are a great idea too.
So helpful!! Thanks everyone and keep the ideas coming!!

The first time I saw that movie was my first year of my OE and I was in tears during the airport scenes.
