So DS 20months has just figured out how to climb out of his cot.....I figured we had a few more months at least as he is quite short....
Anyway, I don't really want to take the sides of the cot off yet( his cot converts to a toddler bed), I don't think he is ready. I can just picture him trashing his room in the middle of the night  He can also open doors so I didnt think I would need to get locks this early.
Has anyone had a toddler do this at an earlier than expected? What did you do?

Yep! Kaela (17mos) climbed out of her cot just a couple of weeks ago. Her cot is not adjustable so she had to go straight into a big bed. I was hoping she would stay in the cot for longer as she did not settle easily for sleep, and because she shares a bedroom with her 5yo sister (who has lots of little treasures).
So anyway we child-proofed the room - there are some toys but no little papers she can get to - and the door handle is already high so she can't open it. (Otherwise I would install a slide lock until she is older). And whaddya know, she settles into bed far better than she ever did in the cot. It did take her a day or two to get used to it, but three weeks on, she climbes into bed by herself and waits for the covers to be put on. (Very cute!)
During the first week she left the bed a lot and fell asleep on her sister's bed or on the floor, but now she does really well.

All I know is that when they are climbing out of the cot, it's time to go to a bed. It's a pain, but it's the safest thing to do. It's just a whole new stage in baby proofing!

Have you tried a sleeping bag? I have heard lots of babies don't/can't stand up in them so that might work if you are not ready to move to a toddler bed. Also the safety sleep but he might be able to work out how to get out of one of them.

When they start climbing out of the cot, then its time for a bed  Sounds like he is ready for sure.
Make his room as boring as possible and safe, and stick a baby gate at his door, problem solved.
Thats what we have done, the gate works well as he cant get out but he can still call me and see out, and all he has in his room now are some books and soft toys on his shelf and his big tall boy, I just have to tape his draws shut.

Guess it is time to sort out the room and pull the sides off by the sounds of it!
TaliP, we have tried sleeping bags in the past but he hates wearing them unfortunately! Good idea though as it would definitely stop him getting out.

I think the only option is to put him in a bed, you dont want him to fall climbing out of the cot.
Child proof his room, and leave minimal toys in there, maybe you could get a safety gate for his door so he can get up but cant get out of his room

We put C into a big bed at 19m and he adjusted really well - he still moves around a fair bit but stays in the bed (we were surprised!)
We have moved all his books to the top of the dresser and he has just grown tall enough to reach our (very high) door handles so will probably get a safety lock for that this weekend. He knows there are clothes in the drawers but he likes to put them away rather than pull them out so *touch wood* haven't had to clean those up too much yet Worst damage has been to his wall stickers, he's just getting into stickers at the mo and I went in on the weekend to discover he'd pulled them all off the wall (and torn them!) and put them in the bin

Aston managed to get out of his cot from about 9 months onwards. Drove me nuts. But we co-slept most of the time anyway. Now he just sleeps in a bed. I put pillows as a "just in case he falls out" guard. But he rarely does. You can always try with a matress on the ground.
i have no probs with him going to bed and sleep on his own at night because it's dark. Harder during the day - he gets up unless I stay with him and almost hold him in bed til he goes to sleep (more our issue than an all round issue ) 
Now when Aston wakes up he just climbs out of bed and wanders to find me - unless the door is closed, at which point he yells.
