Clothing question for new born up

I brought hardly any clothes for my DS1 because we didn't find out what sex he was. I did however by a few long sleeved singlets and woollen singlets. I found that when I did have my DS, I was given HEAPS of clothes and that I didn't really need to buy any more. My suggestion is not to get too carried away with buying clothes in advance, as you don't know what you are having or how big or small your little one will be. Plus, if you are as lucky as we were, you may not have to buy many clothes at all.

Ours is a winter/spring baby. We just made sure we had 5-6 changes of each item, so singlets (cotton and woollen ones), short sleeve bodysuits, long sleeve bodysuits, sleepsuits, gowns, woollen cardigans, socks. Then some mittens, booties, hats on top of that.

I don't really change my staples as they grow, just get enough of each size. Although obviously in summer you want a few more summery things (t-shirts, shorts, dresses if its a girl and you want them to wear them) and in winter more long sleeved and thicker things.

If you did want to start stocking up on clothes, bodysuits with the snap crotches are a safe bet - buy long sleeve ones for autumn/winter and short sleeve/sleeveless for spring/summer. In warmer months, they can sleep in them too instead of two piece PJs (much easier for nappy changes). Go for cotton or merino wool.

My DD is 20 months and still wears a bodysuit everyday - as an added layer for warmth in winter and by itself with pants/skirt in summer.

I find pumpkin patch bodysuits really cute and the sizing is generous, and they are really cheap if you buy them in sales/at outlet stores.

We were given so many clothes I found it stressful trying to get them all worn I wouldn't buy too much as you will probably get given a fair bit and you don't know how long he/she will be in each size for... my wee girl was still in her 6 month old clothes when she was over a year. I bought her a whole heap of clothes at a pp sale for when she was one... they are still too big
I agree with melnel - stick to the basics and you can never have too many pair of socks cos washing machines eat tiny socks

Yip I second/third/fourth the don't buy too many things.

We weren't sure what DD was going to be as we were a surprise family (although that nearly killed me after awhile I just wanted to know lol)

I seriously got about 8AIO's maybe  more on trade me for $6 all in good condition. I got some short sleeve body suits, some singlets and that was it. I also didn't do the 0000 or newborn stuff I just went straight into 0-3mths and she is only just now starting to grow out of her AIOs but thats length she is quite a long baby although not as long as some I know and her 0-3body suits and singlets are still fitting her easy because they stretch. The singlets we got were shortsleeved envelope necks.

Regardless of what you say you will get given lots at your babyshower and again after the baby is born. My family all bought me after DD was born older stuff so 3-6mth or 6-9mth.

We were buying in Jan/Feb for a July baby so couldn't really find long sleeve bodysuits but we use one of these underneath her AIOs instead of a singlet as the singlets can ride up. Also it depends on your baby DD is quite a hot baby, she breaks out in a sweat when feeding and gets a slight heat rash and for a couple of weeks we had her wrapped in a blanket with just a singlet and nappy on as she was warm that way. I feel the heat easily when it is hot hence she does.

I bought virtually nothing before our boy was born, just a couple of sleepsuits. He ended up being bought so many clothes that the set of drawers we bought for his bedroom - with 3 large drawers and 4 small drawers - can't hold everything

However, I found that pretty much everyone gave him clothes for as he grows, from 3 months upwards, and he received virtually no newborn stuff. So I bought extra sleepsuits and singlets only as that's what he's lived in day and night so far.

With regards to the sleepsuits, I love PP ones and also the Oshkosh ones in Farmers. I am not keen on any sleepsuits and body suits that only do up at the crotch, I prefer sleepsuits that do up from top to bottom and also the PP bodysuits that wrap over and do up with domes, they are SO much easier to get on.

We were inundated with knitted bootees which so far he is yet to wear...

Aw, I love 'em too, but he lives in sleepsuits with feet and we haven't gotten round to them yet

Jake was too big for everything - he went straight into 000s and was in size 1s by 6 months. I personally didn't find we went through much in the first 6 months so only needed 3-4 of the basics. Its now that I'm needing to shop alot (secondhand stores rock!)

ETA he was a winter baby too but also runs very warm so he's never needed much to wear and he was swaddled for the first few months as well.

Does anyone one have anyidea of how many items of clothing I will need for a winter new born, a spring 3-6mnth, and a summer 6mnth +?

- altho some people rely on 2nd handdowns we didnt so we started from scratch ..just my personal decision not to let her wear anyhand downs.
-we let family etc buy the "special outfits" (eg PP dresses / outfits etc) and mum and i did the standards
-i relied heavily on onsies - every outfit she wore had a onsie under it and some days i messy she would go thru several. I used them to layer also (eg long sleeve ones under a pretty dress that wouldnt fit next season. Oneises are cost savers - they add warmth without cost....you can get them really cheap and some pretty / cool ones if just on their own without clothes on top (we now rely on long sleeve tops layered in winter for same effect)
-get 2-3 knitted jackets for each 3-6 month group...they go over everything!! and provide natural warmth rather than sweating like in polar fleece etc...
- i also bought small blankets (plushy ones from baby city worked well and she is still sleeping under a big plush now) to add an extra layer if we were out and about etc..tucked i stroller or carseat - even in summer.
For hot hot days I used muslin - but a may baby may not need this...
-I had been given loads of PP t shirts as gifts so if it was still to cold to wear etc again i used onsies (long sleeved)
-Invest in several pairs of socks - we used about 10 plus pairs for the first year plus knitted booties (she would not keep PP type ones on - what a waste those were!). We had more socks etc as she started dc at 5 months and they get lost VERY easy there and in washing
-if you can get some Bobux soft shoes for 5 month plus do it...i loved ours - they looked nicer than just socks too.
for bubs first season after 6 months old wait to buy until you know how big bubs is...we got a 9 lb 8er so never went near two lovely outfits we were given as gifts pre birth!
-finding out what sex bubs is helps in a shopping trip..i have a friend who didnt and got given ALL white items at her shower....she was sad when bubs was a girl and had a c section and couldnt get bubs into anything "girlie" for weeks and weeks...i think this contributed (in a small part) to her depression post natally....

-my tip also is this....we pre washed everything in lux flakes - for the first six months,.....and then only washed her items in lux flakes for the first year in her own wash (ie not with ours)....i think that helped avoid skin irritations and allergies also...and kept her clothing looking lovely.

I had a end of May baby, & found I needed to buy heaps & all that we got given were bigger sizes. I likes things that dome at crotch & up the found, tops & pants so baby does not have to strip so much to get changed when cold.
