Today I went to a 'Perc and Pearls party'... they're run for a charity, Bright Hope World, who are devoted to saving young Thai girls from being sold into prostitution. The jewellery they make and the coffee they grow are 2 different businesses, but both are legit ways for these families to earn an income without having to resort to the unimaginable. The staff for the charity all work voluntarily - this is a not for profit organisation.
The charity imports the coffee beans (farmers are paid a Fair Trade price for them) into Chch, where a roasting company grind and roast them for free. So money spent here goes to where it's needed, not into the running of the organisation.

If anyone's interested in buying their coffee through this crowd instead of the supermarket, here's a link to their site: bright hope world

It's only a fraction more $ to spend but I'm getting my fix with a clear conscience from now on! And the coffee's good.

What an awesome idea. I will be getting my next fix from there too and the freight is reasonable too.

yeah I thought the freight charges were OK too... clearly they don't use NZ Post! Ha ha.
Makes sense to buy the big 1kg bags... but can someone remind me, is freezing ground coffee a no-no or a good idea? I've heard different things. Is it just whole beans that are OK frozen?

Freezing coffee is a big no no.

The best coffee is made when you buy the beans, store them in an airtight container in your pantry and grind as needed.  Otherwise buy the grinds and store them in an airtight container.

Thanks for the link.
