Topic: Colic - HELP! Posted: 14 March 2006 at 6:42pm |
I think that my 3 month has Colic, though not sure. First time mum. Every afternoon the same pattern is occuring, screaming, not wanting the breast, hates being in her cot. It's driving me bananas , feel really sorry for her though. This has been happening for the past week, apart from the weekends, so not sure what it is.
Any comments and suggestions are most welcome.

Oh man I feel so sorry for you.I went through absolute hell with Brooke for the first 2-3mths.Everyday at 4pm she would start the screaming and it would last sometimes till 11.30 at night. It was so heartbreaking and exhausting.....It put a huge strain on our marriage and I was not enjoying being a mum to her at all. We tried everything..natural colic drops...eliminating certain foods from my diet(was breastfeeding)....I took fennel tablets....honestly we tried every suggestion...even took her to osteopath...I hate to say it but once I put her on formula at 3mths she started sleeping better and just seemed so much more content...I think my milk was crap cause I was so tired and stressed and I wasnt eating properly...but I not saying change to formula....Brooke was just not getting enough of me and so was always hungry and didnt sleep well cause of that so think that was her "colic".Apart from her being sick at mo with chest infection she is so much fun and I am loving being her mum now.....She sleeps pretty good at night too...from 6.30 till 10.30 then till bout 5am then cple more hrs after that.during day she still not agreat sleeper but hell of alot better than she was.

Hi Hun, I've just emailed my cousin's wife, her little man had it chronically, so have asked her for some tips. My suggestion would be to try a "cranial osteopath" but I will get back to u with some ideas very soon. Hang in there tho, it will pass.

Hi, I had a similar experience with my little one and I too tried everything I could think of and everything evrybody else gave me to try. Infacol, gripe water, natural wind powder, expressing etc etc etc......... Now it may not be the case with your wee one but now that I am on the other side of the screaming I truly beleive that this is just what some bubs do. The 1st 4 months were a bloody nightmare, more for the fact that I felt so helpless to make my bub feel better. I also believe that the "over tired" bub is very common and I am not sure how you teach a bub to sleep but certainly be conscience of those tired signs.
If you do beleive it is colic certainly get some help but if you can utilize some help to give you a break, have a bath with bub. Remember to try and stay relaxed (not always easy). Babies do tend to have that unsettled period late afternoon, early evening just when you are trying to cook dinner etc - awful timing.
Hey once we got through those 4 months I actually enjoyed having a baby, always loved him to bits but didn't start to really enjoy until he settled.
Best of luck

if you google colic you get some good info - i thought my first had it too, luckily not but he did have thrush so rule out anything medical, and bad wind which was only helped by cooled boiled water. it is common to have a time in the evening when they are really hard to settle. some people think that carrying them in a sling helps, you can do your housework or whatever and still have bubs next to you. so you may want to consider that as an option.

Hey after me trying to make you feel better last night I sit here bleary eyed and shattered in the dark. Mine will be 1 in a week or so and I have just had 5 nights of unbroken sleep. Last night he woke as I went to bed and didn't go back down until 1am then up at 3, 3.40, 4,4.30 and up for good at 5.50am.
So things get better as baby gets older but lots of new challenges arise and luckily mums are built tough and we just get through each one.
I was just reading back over your post and you said bub is ok on weekends? Is that when your hubbie/partner? is home. Perhaps you are eating better and resting better on weekends which could be helping your milk supply later evening. Remember to eat well through the day, have snacks handy to munch on and maybe a high protien lunch like an egg sandwich to boost your milk and energy for the afternoon. A good drink such as ovaltine to keep you going too. It s often easy to find time to sit and eat when bub is little.

Thanks very much for all of your answers!
Off to the doctor today for Lucy's 3 month jabs, so will ask the nurse if she knows of anything.
Can you tell if she has Thrush? Maybe it isn't colic, it's just that the symptoms are there, or maybe I am over reacting! She has been very overtired lately, so maybe she is just tired?
I have had such a great 3 months with Lucy, no problems with the birth, natural water birth, and now this.
