Hi there,

Just wanted to get some thoughts on drinking Complan during pregnancy. I'm always worried that I don't get enough nutrition for baby.

I've been feeling very tired, all the time, and am thinking that baby is sucking out all he can get from me.

Is Complan good to have every day or should it only be taken once of a few times a week?

I had the chocolate one with milk, hoping that the milk will boost some calcium for baby. But any thoughts on whether it is better nutritionally to have with water or milk?

I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Hey Debbie, personally I was really unimpressed about getting Complan in my Bounty pack. You would be getting so much better sources of minerals, vitamins, and other nutrients from a good diet. Also, Complan contains 188ug of Vit A in just one serve. Too much Vit A can cause serious problems to a developing fetus.

Hi Tracey,

Thank you for your reply. Yeah, I saw all those vitamins and things and thought it couldn't be good to have all of that each day!

I'm a bit worried about the diet thing, as I don't eat red meat, and am worried that I don't eat enough, but my body can only take so much in a day!

Do you have any suggestions on Calcium intake a day. I'm not a big milk fan, and am trying to stay away from Milo because of the sugar. I'm only seeing my mw on Monday, saw a mw consultant on Friday and she was going to send me a recipe to mix a specific low fat ice cream with milk and a banana, and she said a glas of this a day will make up all my calcium requirements. But I still haven't received it. I eat 150g of yoghurt daily, and have milk with my cereal in the morning, but that's about all the calcium I have.

I do take Elevit each day.

I was told that if I was taking a good pregnancy multi then the baby will get everything it needs. It will also steal what it's not getting from right out of your bones! Scary hu But, I don't do milk, can't stomach it, so I've got some calcium enriched soy milk that makes wonderful hot chocolates. There are also loads of nuts and vegetables full of calcium, curly kale has more then milk.

As for red meat, mostly what your getting from that is iron, you might find that you have enough iron although many women find they have an iron deficiency by the end of their pregnancy. You can have supplements or you could do a quick google of vegetable sources such as dried beans or dark green leaf vegetables. If you also increase your Vit C intake your body will find it much easier to absorb the iron too.

D, maybe you could ask your midwife to refer you to a dietician to discuss your current requirements and where you can get them from. 

There are also some really good books available.  I got one out from the library yesterday called "healthy pregnancy" by Dr Miriam Stoppard.  There's a whole section on dietary requirements.

You can get iron from: fish, eggs, cereals, molasses, apricots and haricot beans

You can get calcium from: tinned sardines, cheeses, yoghurt, leafy greens veges, broccoli, soya products.

If you need a vitamin/energy boost try some V8 vege or fruit and vege juice.

Thanks guys, will definately google some more on vitamin enriched foods. Got some booklets from the mw consultant as well, will have to thoroughly go through them and pick out under each section what it is I do eat and then stock up on those.

Ok, I was just about to make myself a smoothy with complan but might just skip the complan ( and add milo for the choc taste)

I use the calci trim milk plus take the supplements (when I remember).

I'm having trouble with the vegies. I've started drinking that vegie juice which tastes awful but it's got all the good stuff! I was surprised to see the levels of Vit A especially in the ones with fruit and carrot in them. The fruity or citrus ones have 100% of Vit A RDI. The vegie one has 47% of Vit A RDI so I just have a serving of that about 2/3 of the recommended serving size on the bottle.

NZpiper - Milo also has vitamin A added to it. Not heaps, but I wouldn't overdo it.

Danaj - I wouldn't worry too much about the vege juice. Studies have shown a difference between preformed vitamin A (from multivitamins and animal products) and beta-carotine from fruits and veges. Apparently it is only the preformed vitamin A that you need to worry about overdosing on during pregnancy.

Its also only one form of vitamin A that is added to foods/supps .... if you check the label for the form - its the one with retinol or retinoic acid in the name that you need to be careful of. If it says in the ingredients list Vitamin A Acetate it is OK, and beta-carotene is also OK. (I'm a food technologist).

Just a tip --- Complan / Vitaplan are great for your milk supply when breastfeeding. And should be fine to have a few times a week when pg.

Thanks for that Nikki.

I think it shouldn't do any harm, especially if taken in moderation.

I have been suffering from tiredness from day 1 of my pregnancy, and I had one sachet of Complan on Sunday, and I felt so revived. Definately needed that.

Im not a big red meat eater either, I had to take an iron supplement, and I also took floradix, its a wonderful natural source of vitamins and iron! Great Stuff!!

I have complan aswell, but that was after I had my son, to boost my milk supply.

Really?!? Milo!!!!! I was having about 3 cups a day with my first pg! Sheesh, I only have one 3 or 4 times a week with this pg but geez, its everywhere!

I am vegeterian and can't drink straight milk. for the first Tri I couldn't eat much at all and was really worried that bubs wasn't getting enough. But at my latest MW appointment she said that bubs is growing really well. In fact it is a week ahead in it's growing. I haven't taken any vits as my stomach couldn't handle them. Now that my M/S is bascially gone I make sure to eat vege sausages a few times a week for protein and I am slowly getting back into dairy foods (couldn't even bear the though of them at the start). I think that as long as your getting your 8 + a day in fruit and veges and getting some regular protein and staying hydrated then bubs should be getting all it needs.

I have been having complan from time to time this pg. In the first trimester it was once a day (before breakfast) to give me the boost I needed to get going. I have it with milk too because I don't have a heap of calcium in my diet usually, so it's probably good for me. And I bet it tastes better too

For those of you who don't like milk, try smoothies with coconut cream. It's something my mw got me onto when I was bf #3. Yum
