Topic: confused - when is best to have sex? Posted: 09 March 2010 at 8:36am |
Wow, I really feel like a n00b here: fist I thought you just had sex without contraception and then BANG you're pregnant.
Then I thought if you had sex around the time you ovulate it is more likely you'll get pregnant (around day 14 of my cycle)
But now I hear that you should start having sex BEFORE you ovulate. :(
Can any ladies shed some light on this?
I have a long-ish cycle - around 32-33 days
We have been trying since day 12, it's now day 14. We are planning on having sex twice a day - every day until the end of March - or until AF comes.
Have I missed the ovulation boat? I know it's just based on numbers and not on charting temp, next month, if this doesn't work I'll start charting.
Sorry for the long post.

Well assuming you have a normal 12-14 day LP (time between ovulation and af arriving), your peak fertile time would be closer to days 18- 20. Charting temps, or even using OPKs until you start charting could really help shed some light on when exactly you ovulate seeing as you dont have the standard 28 day cycle (e.g my cycle was 23-25 days, and going by the '14 days before af' rule I assumed I ovulated on CD9, but in reality I was ovulating CD11/12 most cycles, with a 11/12 day LP, and charting was how I found that one out)
You are genrally most fertile up to 2 days before ovulation, through to the day after (the egg lasts app 24 hours) But its not unheard of for women to concieve when they ovulated 4 or even 5 days after they last did the deed.

Due to the length of your cycle, starting on day 12 sounds right and then probably go through to day 22 just to make sure if you aren't doing ovulation tests. Having sex twice a day every day sounds exhausting! There is research to suggest that you should limit it to every second day to give the sperm time to replenish and that is also what my gyno recommended but who knows? Good luck!

This is what worked for us I have a 34 day cycle and we bd'd every other day from CD10 and extra on the weekend, just so happened ov coincided with Valentine's Day making romance a little easier.
We BD'd 2-3 days before OV and I got BFP at 16 DPO.

Every other day should work, like little red said I have heard that apparently the quantity and quality of the sperm decrease if you BD too much...
Otherwise get some OPK's so you can find out before you ovulate and then all you should need to do is BD on the day its positive and the next two after that...
Good luck!

Twice a day is exhausting! I might tone it down to once a day - *phew*
But thanks ladies for all your advice.
If AF comes this month will defiantly start charting.
