Is he fully BF or FF?
BF babies, in general, shouldn't get constipated, but it's not unheard of.
You could offer him some water.
I found when Hannah hadn't gone in 2 weeks (she wasn't constipated, though) that by offering her a teaspoon of brown sugar in 60mls of cooled boiled water 3 times a day she went within 24 hours.
Of course, that COULD be coincidental, consider it was two weeks since her last poop
I hope he goes soon, poor wee fella!

If FF, its a good idea to get into the habit of offering 50mls of water a day as lots of FF can get constipated initially. They don't have to have the 50mls in one go tho and can be spaced thru the day.
As MamaPickle said, 1 teaspoon of brown sugar in 50-60mls of water should get him going and you may have to do it every couple of days initially until he sorts himself out.

I didn't like using brown sugar. We have always used watered down prune juice for constipation. If the constipation continues for a few weeks you might want to look at changing formulas. We found nurture made Daniel constipated like mad and we went to S26 and haven't had that problem.

Yea I was told not to use the gold ones cuz they either make them real spewy or real constipated, so we went for the normal one. I'll see how we go with the sugar water - mum said she's already used it on him without telling me when he had problems going last week! Cheeky monkey lol. Ah well if it works it works, if it doesnt i'll take him to the doctors.

My little one was terribly constipated when he was little too......we didnt use the brown sugard method, but we did give him lots of water and used a product called Lactulose which is a medicine that we got from the Drs. We actually ended up taking him to see a paediatrician to check everything was okay. He just seemed to grow out of it. He gets it occassionaly now, but I just give him prune juice now.

I thought that the Gold formulas were especially for babies that usually get a bit bunged up on regular formula?
Chloe is on nurture, not the gold one but just the regular one, because she hasn't had any probs... I had just heard that you should stick to normal formula unless they have probs keeping regular. But I could be wrong.
I've heard that watered down prune juice can be good, I would probably prefer that to sugar-water if giving it regularly. I don't think sugar water would do any harm if it wasn't all the time though. But I don't have any experience with constipated bubba, really (Chloe didn't go for 2 days and it seemed to really bother her but her stools weren't really "hard" when she finally went after I tried to get her to drink some sugar water... not really sure how much went into her though).
ETA: If it really is a huge prob then like someone said already, you might have to get some lactulose from the Dr.

Hey Miss Angel
My boy didn't actually get consitpated but was heading that way, I just add 1 teaspoon of brown sugar to his bottle of formula. Works a treat. We tried water but Oliver quickly learnt that it didn't taste as good as the formula and wouldn't take it! Also prune juice can be a bit much for younger babies as their digestive systems are quite up to it, but I know plenty of people who have used it even on babies as young as 3 weeks with no problems....Need to buy prunes and stew them though to get the juice, so brown sugar can be a bit easier - especially if you need urgently - lol

Warm watr or prune juice help, if it's a big problem your GP will help with lactulose. As for formulas, never heard of not using the Gold ones for the reasons you were told, we used Karicare gold + (stockpiled it when it was withdrawn) and had no problems with constipation, but she was bunged up completely on anything else. Each baby is individual in that respect, might pay to try another formula but often it can make the problem worse with chopping and changing tho. I was told if you are changing within brands ie to Gold, to go straight onto it, if changing brands to mix the two ie 1:4 for a few days then 1:2 etc
Sorry that went off topic a bit but hope he gets some movement soon

Forgot to add good old warm baths, massage tummy in clockwise circles and cycling legs with him lying on his back are all good non systemic remedies too

And you can get Coloxyl (a stool softener) at the chemist or on prescription if you need it.

I didnt find the coloxyl very useful, as his poo wasnt that hard, he just couldnt get it out. My GP also showed me how to do anal massage....but THB we only did it once or twice and didnt really have a lot of success, so didnt bother. The lactulose worked well for us.

We found the coloxyl good, though we haven't had to use it much since being on her reflux meds. A warm compress on the tummy can help also. As far as the water goes, Rohann would never take water (and I've heard a lot of contradicting info on wether you should or not), neither before or after a feed. Have also heard you just add brown sugar to their bottle??

I was onto Plunketline about this today and she suggested 1 tsp of either Apple/Orange/Prune Juice mixed with 50mls of water.

People (and babies) can become reliant on things like lactulose and coloxyl, so it's best to try a non-laxative remedy first and see if it helps. Those things are sort of like last resorts, if you get desperate. Just thought I should mention that!

ah, and the apple thing - I spooned as much pureed apple into Ella as I could to help her along (hers was chronic and only enema's ended up working for some time)... and then the Doc said one day that some people find that apple bungs them up! Most people it'll have the, ahem desired effect, but some find the opposite! Craziness. Prunes on the other hand aren't so unpredictable... and don't worry too much about the amount of sugar in the juices, that's part of what makes them useful. Lactulose is full of fruit sugars too. Also, gold Kiwifruit was a bit more effective than prunes for us.

you could also try putting his bottom in a bath (i found our sink was perfect!) of warm water with a couple of teaspoons of baking SODA dissolved in it, it helps relax the sphincter muscles, so could be perfect if you can see him trying to "push one out" maybe stick his bottom in the sink of water and try that?
good luck, i tried everything for a while with both the girls, resorting to coloxyl and lactoluse after the sugary water and found prune juice and water really helped!

How long should it take for the juice + water to take effect?
