Topic: cord bank thing Posted: 24 April 2006 at 8:34pm |
Is anyone thinking of or has anyone kept the cord stem cells or whatever it is they call it. Ive been looking into it and it seems pretty expensive but then I think $5000 could save the life of this baby or Kobe. IM not sure of the ins and outs of it but what do you guys think of it?

We chose not too partly for the cost - and I know you can not put a price on your childs life BUT it is a lot of money. Also; and I can be corrected on this as we didn't do a lot of research but it appeared that the uses for the cord blood were fairly limited and seemed to be for more obscure diseases etc.
I am not aware of anyone that has banked any? I would have to say though that I probably would have if money was not an issue just for the "what if" factor. I would imagine a lot of us don't have the luxury of that sort of money laying around though.
I will be interested to see peoples views on this however.

I know it seems a bit sad to say that it's just a money thing for us, but it really is. Otherwise I'd consider it, I suppose, even though we don't have a family history of anything really !

thanks for bumping it for me.
It is a lot of money aye but pretending we live in a dream world and could all afford to do it, who thinks it would be worth it. I didnt think about the whole issue of whether our laws allow you to use cord from one baby to help another child. Also I know its used for luekemia etc but I just wondered what the chances of it actually being able to be used to save a child are. Im a bit paranoid at the moment because, and before I say this can I point out I know how silly it sounds but Im a tad supersticous and do believe things happen for a reason. Anyway just before we went on holiday I found a phamplet on cord blood bank from when I was preggie with Kobe and had a look (still didnt really understand to much though) then in Aussie my friend had just brought a book to read over there and it was My Sisters Keeper which is about a girl who was conceived to save her sister who had luekemia then while she was reading it we found the name Kobe in the story and our last name was the same name as a sheriff. I know its totally far fetched but neither names are common and it was just so strange and I got goosebumps when she told me. I have always just had a feeling something would happen with Kobe, maybe it was his rough start or something I dont know, I just feel I could be giving up a chance to save his life, paranoid I know.

It would only be useful to Kobe tho if his blood type is the same as the new baby...
I have thought about it and still am, it is a lot of money, but then like someone else said, you can't put a price on your child's life. Will see closer to the time. The goo dthinkg about having identicals is that they will have the same blood type and stuff so we'd only need to bank one lot of stem cells for both of them (and then hopefully they are A pos like Maya)

OMG I didn't know it was so much money!! I really would love to do it but I had no idea of the cost involved...we're only just going to cover the costs of everything else and paying off enough debt to survive on one income let alone come up with another $5k. I'm really bummed about that!

I really wanted to do the cord bank thing but then found out how much it was. Like a lot of people we will struggle on one wage as it is and just don't have that sort of money laying around. If money wasn't an issue we would defiatly do it.
