Hi,
I am currently battling with cradle cap on my 3 month old. She's had for a while now, it gets better then comes back worse. I'm using almond oil and combing the loose bits out, but now it's like she's scratching her head (it could be a coincidence as she grabs anything in arms reach and she can reach her hair!). Also her hair is now falling out with the scabby bits that I comb out.
Can anyone suggest how to make her cradle cap go away? and this may sound like a silly question, but do babies even know what an itch is?

I found the easiest way for me to deal with cradle cap was to oil her scalp in the morning, wash her hair when I bathed her, and then rub her head firmly with a towel. I did this every second day for a week and it came right. I also had to make sure her hair was rinsed with clean water - not the bath water with the suds in it. Any shampoo/bath wash residue will make it worse.

Ben had mild case of cradle cap and I put calendula cream on his head and it went almost overnight

We're still struggling with the cradle cap even now at 7 and 1/2 months! We use apricot oil and comb the loose bits out, but it still seems to hang around.
Campbell also gets a bit of excema on his scalp, which he scratches madly at sometimes. They definitely know what an itch is!
If its just the cradle cap and its not bothering her, then you might find you can both live with it until it disappears. Otherwise you might have to find something that will help take away the itch, and hope it isn't excema!

Leonard had terrible cradle cap and I thought 'Oh, I won't bother getting rid of it since it doesn't bother him' but it got to such a stage that I thought I'd better.
I put baby oil on his head every chance I could over a day or two and then washed it off in the bath. Sadly alot of his hair came off too but that was just a kind of coincidence (newborn hair - it was going to come off anyway). His scalp looked good as new once I dealt with it and TBH, I felt like a better mother (for some stupid reason).
The bath was gross though with all these bits of cradle cap with 5 or 6 hairs attached to each piece floating around in the bath.
I think the itch might be the oil because I think it makes their head hot.

Corban has always had flakey cradle cap which I treat with almond oil and a soft bristled brush but lately he was developing big crusty patches. Someone told me to make a paste of baking soda and water, cover his head with it and let it dry then just wash his hair as normal. Worked a treat  Other than that have heard great things about Mustela cradle cap cream, haven't had to try it yet.

I just leave it well alone, Spencer still has cradle cap and he is over 2 years, you can't see it unless you part his hair to look. Kyle has it too. You will probably find when you stop doing stuff to it it will stop irritating baby.
I would only worry if it looks sore/infected.

Just a note about the hair - Lydia barely has any cradle cap, but most of her hair fell out anyway, starting at about 3 months old.

Aqueous cream from the doc's works a treat, also good for dry parts on the skin AND makes awesome hair gel lol

Oh, hadnt thought about using the Aqueous cream! I had been using almond oil to keep his head moisturised. It does tend to make his head hot so that will work much better.
Definately wash hair with clean water and try to remember to brush everyday regardless of whether there is any cradle cap there. It will help lift the dead skin cells from the scalp.
Jake still has a bit of newborn hair that is being held in place by the tiny bit of cradle cap that just wont go away. It looks funny as his new hair is strawberry blonde and his nb hair is brown. LOL.

I have been told to leave it. Taking the cradle cap off and exposing it to the air will encourage the cells to repeat the action. Just keep moist.

My Dr gave me a prescription for a shampoo called Sebizole which I used twice a week for one week and my Son's cradle cap disappeared. Admittedly it wasn't really bad but what he did have was also in his eyebrows, so I didn't want to leave it. It's not come back since.

oooh sebizole is the shampoo I get prescribed for my hair. I'm not sure if DD has cradle cap or psirosis (sp) on her scalp like I do. I went nutty one night at mum and dads with olive oill then rubbed and scraped it out lol. It annoyed me! Now she only has patchy bits on her head not a whole head of it. At baby and you they showed us a pic of a babys who head hadn't been picked at and it was dry and crusty and yuk like a scab

Well, Poppy still has some cradle cap. She has stopped scratching her head now though.
It has improved with us keep picking at it. The Plunket nurse said it can get infected under the little scabs, so it's good to pick it.
We've been keeping her head moist with almond oil, although it looks like we put gel in her hair! We check it at every nappy change and comb some out if there's loose bits...apart from on her soft spot. We leave that alone!
Scrubbing at bath time with an adult flannel works a treat too.

sebizole shampoo worked a treat on my wee girl too she had really bad cradle cap i got so frustrated trying all the different recommendations nothing worked, in the end i took her to the doctor who prescribed the shampoo.
